Update in the epidemiology of the rheumatic diseases.

The epidemiology of early synovitis syndromes in the community remains of interest. Attempts to identify those cases likely to progress to erosive rheumatoid arthritis have yielded some prognostic features that may be clinically applicable. The incidence of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis appears to fluctuate in a cyclic pattern, suggesting microbial or other environmental factors contributing to its occurrence. In the United States, the frequency of scleroderma varies among racial groups with rising rates noted especially among African-American women. A very high prevalence of scleroderma among

Psychological Behavior of Frontline Medical Staff in the Use of Preventive Medication for COVID-19: A Cross-Sectional Study.

PURPOSE: To understand the current pandemic, levels of anxiety in frontline staff, and whether they have been using medication to prevent COVID-19. METHODS: Between January 10 and March 10, 2020, 290 frontline staff completed a questionnaire incorporating the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale 7 (GAD-7) to indicate their psychological behavior in the use of preventive medication. RESULTS: Of those who participated in the study, 77.6% used preventive medication, with 47.5, 40.9, and 11.6% using these as part of routine preventive treatment, to fight infection after it was contracted, and afte

[Longitudinal studies in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases].

Longitudinal studies of well defined cohorts have contributed to the identification of risk factors of coronary heart disease and other clinical complications of atherosclerosis. After commenting on the conclusions of experimental atherosclerosis and risk factors suggested by the study of a series of myocardial infarction in young adults and their matched controls, we discuss the methodology, management and results of longitudinal studies carried out in the United States since 1949: Twin Cities, Framingham, Pooling Project, Western Collaborative, Puerto Rico Evans County, NI-IION-SAN, San Fran

Prevention of spread of hepatitis C.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is transmitted by percutaneous or permucosal exposure to infectious blood or blood-derived body fluids. Based on the results of cohort and acute case control studies, risk factors associated with acquiring HCV infection in the United States have included transfusion of blood and blood products and transplantation of solid organs from infected donors, injecting drug use, occupational exposure to blood (primarily contaminated needle sticks), birth to an infected mother, sex with an infected partner, and multiple heterosexual partners. Nosocomial and iatrogenic transmissio

[Travel and malaria prevention : what lies behind the maps].

Malaria remains a major infectious disease worldwide, with a particularly high incidence in sub-Saharan Africa. For travelers visiting endemic areas, awareness of the risk of infection and the rigorous application of appropriate preventive measures are essential to prevent this life-threatening disease. In Switzerland, a transparent methodology was developed in collaboration with other European countries classifying malaria risk areas based on current epidemiological data and presenting harmonized preventive measures in detailed maps. These maps support travel medicine experts as well as prima

Qualitative Mediation Analysis: an Important Method for Exploring Mediating Mechanisms in Prevention Science.

Mediating variables serve a primary role in devising intervention theories and applying them to practice. Prevention scientists have repeatedly called for understanding how and why an independent variable (X; e.g., intervention) is related to a dependent variable (Y; e.g., drug use). Quantitative mediation is used to describe mediating variables that intervene in the causal path from X to Y. Most methodological development for mediation analysis has focused on statistical methods and the assumptions necessary for valid application of these statistical methods. The current paper describes how q

Metabolic Nephrology.

Nephrology faces a paradox. The prevalence of kidney disease is rising, in spite of advances in diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic strategies. This has kindled interest in the discipline. Once considered a subspecialty of general medicine, nephrology has evolved into a broad discipline. This encompasses diverse fields like transplant medicine, dialysis medicine, onconephrology, interventional nephrology, and immunonephrology. Notably, most causes, clinical manifestations, complications, comorbidities, and therapeutic targets in kidney disease are metabolic in nature. This underscores the n

Prevention of perioperative venous thromboembolism: 2024 guidelines from the French Working Group on Perioperative Haemostasis (GIHP) developed in collaboration with the French Society of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine (SFAR), the French Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (SFTH) and the French Society of Vascular Medicine (SFMV) and endorsed by the French Society of Digestive Surgery (SFCD), the French Society of Pharmacology and Therapeutics (SFPT) and INNOVTE (Investigation Network On Venous ThromboEmbolism) network.

BACKGROUND: Any surgical procedure carries a risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE), albeit variable. Improvements in medical and surgical practices and the shortening of care pathways due to the development of day surgery and enhanced recovery after surgery, have reduced the perioperative risk for VTE. OBJECTIVE: A collaborative working group of experts in perioperative haemostasis updated in 2024 the recommendations for the Prevention of perioperative venous thromboembolism published in 2011. METHODS: The addressed questions were defined by 40 experts (GIHP, SFAR, SFTH and SFMV) and formula

WORLD AND NATIONAL EXPERIENCE IN ORGANIZATION OF PREVENTION OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES.

The aim of the study was to examine the global, European and national experience in the implementation of preventive programs and to reveal their value in health, economy and social health development. The conducted research has found that the implementation of the national program, the correct methodological approach of the physician to evaluate risk factors, and implementing preventive measures of diseases of the circulatory system bring positive results (reduction of prevalence and incidence of cerebral stroke by 13,7% and 1,4%, respectively). The results of the analysis of the health care

Executive physicals: what's the ROI?

With an eye toward prevention, many companies are having their top managers undergo pricey, comprehensive physical exams, complete with full-body CT scans. As imaging technology continues to get better and safer, the day may come when screening healthy people is worth the costs and the risks--but we're not there yet.

An anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic proprietary Chinese medicine nasal spray designated as Allergic Rhinitis Nose Drops (ARND) with potential to prevent SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection by targeting RBD (Delta)- angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) binding.

BACKGROUND: Since the outbreak of COVID-19 has resulted in over 313,000,000 confirmed cases of infection and over 5,500,000 deaths, substantial research work has been conducted to discover agents/ vaccines against COVID-19. Undesired adverse effects were observed in clinical practice and common vaccines do not protect the nasal tissue. An increasing volume of direct evidence based on clinical studies of traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) in the treatment of COVID-19 has been reported. However, the safe anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic proprietary Chinese medicines nasal spray, designated a

Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Opportunistic Infections among HIV-exposed and HIV-infected children: recommendations from CDC, the National Institutes of Health, the HIV Medicine Association of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

This report updates and combines into one document earlier versions of guidelines for preventing and treating opportunistic infections (OIs) among HIV-exposed and HIV-infected children, last published in 2002 and 2004, respectively. These guidelines are intended for use by clinicians and other health-care workers providing medical care for HIV-exposed and HIV-infected children in the United States. The guidelines discuss opportunistic pathogens that occur in the United States and one that might be acquired during international travel (i.e., malaria). Topic areas covered for each OI include a b
