Non-human primates as a reservoir for rabies virus in Brazil.

Rabies virus (RABV) does not persist in the environment as it is a very fragile agent. The primary hosts are mammalian species in the orders Carnivora and Chiroptera. Since the late 1980s, RABV has been isolated from non-human primates, Callithrix jacchus (the white-tufted marmoset), in four coastal states (Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Piauí and Pernambuco) in north-eastern Brazil, where this species is indigenous. The original habitat of C. jacchus consisted of two Brazilian biomes, the Atlantic Forest and the Caatinga. However, these marmosets have since adapted to other ecosystems as a resul…

An International Survey of Approaches to Chair Restraint of Nonhuman Primates.

Specifically designed restraint chairs are the preferred method of restraint for research studies that require NHP to sit in place for sustained periods of time. In light of increasing emphasis on refinement of restraint to improve animal wellbeing, it is important to have a better understanding of this potentially stressful procedure. Although chair restraint is used internationally, very little published information is available on this subject. We developed a survey to obtain an overview of equipment, procedures, and plans for improvement regarding chair restraint. We received 101 responses

Outbreak of Yellow Fever among Nonhuman Primates, Espirito Santo, Brazil, 2017.

In January 2017, a yellow fever outbreak occurred in Espirito Santo, Brazil, where human immunization coverage is low. Histologic, immunohistologic, and PCR examinations were performed for 22 deceased nonhuman New World primates; typical yellow fever features were found in 21. Diagnosis in nonhuman primates prompted early public health response.

Functional definitions of parietal areas in human and non-human primates.

Establishing homologies between cortical areas in animal models and humans lies at the heart of translational neuroscience, as it demonstrates how knowledge obtained from these models can be applied to the human brain. Here, we review progress in using parallel functional imaging to ascertain homologies between parietal areas of human and non-human primates, species sharing similar behavioural repertoires. The human homologues of several areas along monkey IPS involved in action planning and observation, such as AIP, LIP and CIP, as well as those of opercular areas (SII complex), have been def…

Dietary inference from upper and lower molar morphology in platyrrhine primates.

The correlation between diet and dental topography is of importance to paleontologists seeking to diagnose ecological adaptations in extinct … dy size information. The study demonstrates new ways for inferring the diets of extinct platyrrhine primates when both upper and lower molars are available, or, for taxa known only from upper molars. The techniques are useful in reconstructing diet in stem representatives of anthropoid clade, who share key aspects of molar morphology with extant platyrrhin …

Reversion of advanced Ebola virus disease in nonhuman primates with ZMapp.

Without an approved vaccine or treatments, Ebola outbreak management has been limited to palliative care and barrier methods to prevent transmission. These approaches, however, have yet to end the 2014 outbreak of Ebola after its prolonged presence in West Africa. Here we show that a combination of monoclonal antibodies (ZMapp), optimized from two previous antibody cocktails, is able to rescue 100% of rhesus macaques when treatment is initiated up to 5 days post-challenge. High fever, viraemia and abnormalities in blood count and blood chemistry were evident in many animals before ZMapp interv

Dietary fructose induces endotoxemia and hepatic injury in calorically controlled primates.

BACKGROUND: Controversy exists regarding the causative role of dietary fructose in obesity and fatty liver diseases. Clinical trials have indicated that negative health consequences may occur only when fructose is consumed within excess calories. Animal studies have suggested that fructose impairs intestinal integrity and leads to hepatic steatosis (HS). OBJECTIVES: We assessed nonhuman primates after chronic ad libitum and short-term calorically controlled consumption of a high-fructose (HFr), low-fat diet (24% of calories). Microbial translocation (MT), microbiome, and metabolic health inde…

Protozoan parasites in group-living primates: testing the biological island hypothesis.

A series of articles by W.J. Freeland published in the 1970s proposed that social organization and behavioral processes were heavily influen … this hypothesis. In contrast, we quantified two general changes in protozoan parasite community of primates in the study area of Kibale National Park, Uganda, over the nearly 35 years between sample collections: (1) the colobines found free of parasites in the early 1970s are now infected with numerous intestinal protozoan parasites and (2) groups are no …

A live-attenuated chlamydial vaccine protects against trachoma in nonhuman primates.

Blinding trachoma is an ancient neglected tropical disease caused by Chlamydia trachomatis for which a vaccine is needed. We describe a live-attenuated vaccine that is safe and efficacious in preventing trachoma in nonhuman primates, a model with excellent predictive value for humans. Cynomolgus macaques infected ocularly with a trachoma strain deficient for the 7.5-kb conserved plasmid presented with short-lived infections that resolved spontaneously without ocular pathology. Multiple infections with the attenuated plasmid-deficient strain produced no inflammatory ocular pathology but induced…

Correlations between auditory structures and hearing sensitivity in non-human primates.

Primates show distinctions in hearing sensitivity and auditory morphology that generally follow phylogenetic patterns. However, few previous studies have attempted to investigate how differences in primate hearing are directly related to differences in ear morphology. This research helps fill this void by exploring the form-to-function relationships of the auditory system in a phylogenetically broad sample of non-human primates. Numerous structures from the outer, middle, and inner ears were measured in taxa with known hearing capabilities. The structures investigated include the overall size …

Because the total number of TH-ir neurons in the LC was highly correlated with the species mean volume of the medulla oblongata, cerebellum, and neocortical gray matter, we conclude that much of the observed phylogenetic variation can be explained …

Neuronal reduction in frontal cortex of primates after prenatal alcohol exposure.

Children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) show behavioral and intellectual impairments that indicate frontal lobe dysfunction, but the extent of damage to this region has not been clarified by brain imaging studies. This study uses the St Kitts vervet monkey, a species that voluntarily consumes beverage alcohol, to examine the effects of prenatal ethanol exposure. Pregnant vervets were allowed to drink the equivalent of 3-5 standard drinks four times a week during the third trimester. Using unbiased stereology, we estimated neuronal reduction and found significantly fewer cells in

Ontogeny and homology of the paranasal sinuses in Platyrrhini (Mammalia: Primates).

The identity and taxonomic distribution of paranasal sinuses among living platyrrhines has remained a contentious issue (e.g., Cave [1967] Am J Phys Anthropol 26:277-288 vs. Hershkovitz [1977] Chicago: University of Chicago Press) largely because the ontogenetic data required for their detection and identification (e.g., Cave [1967]; Maier [2000] Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press, 99-132.) were not attainable without sacrificing valuable juvenile and subadult specimens. Non-invasive computed tomography (CT) scanning of ontogenetic series of skulls for 10 platyrrhine genera demonstrates

Chemokine networks and in vivo T-lymphocyte trafficking in nonhuman primates.

T-lymphocyte migratory circuits in human and nonhuman primates remain largely unexplored due to the difficulty of defining cell trafficking in vivo. However, this knowledge may reveal critical aspects of immunity and T-lymphocyte homeostasis in both health and disease. Furthermore, in vivo T-lymphocyte trafficking studies may facilitate defining mechanism(s) of immune dysfunction in the nonhuman primate model for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Here, we developed a model for in vivo T-lymphocyte trafficking in nonhuman primates, and delineated homing characteristics of unstimulated …

The functions of laryngeal air sacs in primates: a new hypothesis.

A possible function of laryngeal air sacs in apes and gibbons was investigated by examining the relationships between air sac distribution, call rate, call duration and body weight in a phylogenetic context. The results suggest that lack of sacs in the smaller gibbons and in humans is a derived feature. Call parameters in primates, such as rate and duration, scaled to resting breathing rate (and therefore to body weight) only in species without air sacs, which appear to modify these relationships. Apes and larger gibbons may be able to produce fast extended call sequences without the risk of h…

Plasma pharmacokinetics and cerebrospinal fluid penetration of hypericin in nonhuman primates.

UNLABELLED: Hypericin, a polycyclic aromatic dianthroquinone, is a natural pigment derived from the plant Hypericum perforatum (St John's Wort). The compound has been synthesized and shown to inhibit the growth of malignant glioma cell lines in vitro via inhibition of protein kinase C. Oral hypericin has entered clinical trials in adults with recurrent malignant glioma. PURPOSE: The present study was performed to characterize the plasma pharmacokinetics (PK) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) penetration of hypericin in nonhuman primates. METHODS: Hypericin was administered as an intravenous bolu…
