Tuberculosis and latent tuberculosis in prison inmates.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalences of tuberculosis and latent tuberculosis in inmates. METHODS: Observational study was carried out with inmates of a prison and a jail in the State of São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil, between March and December of 2008. Questionnaires were used to collect sociodemographic and epidemiological data. Tuberculin skin testing was administered (PPD-RT23-2TU/0.1 mL), and the following laboratory tests were also performed: sputum smear examination, sputum culture, identification of strains isolated and drug susceptibility testing. The variables were compared using

Ethnic differences in the health of women prisoners.

OBJECTIVES: The numbers of female and ethnic minority prisoners in the UK are increasing. Despite recent policy initiatives to improve both prison healthcare and the status of women and ethnic minority groups, there are few data with which to inform service development. This is the first study in the UK to examine differences in subjective health status and health behaviours between Black and White female prisoners. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective secondary analysis of data from the Health of Women in Prison Study by the University of Oxford. The latter was a longitudinal survey. METHODS: Partic

Homelessness in the state and federal prison population.

AIMS: This study sought to investigate the rates and correlates of homelessness (i.e. living on the street or in a homeless shelter), including mental illness, among US adult state and federal prison inmates (ASFPIs). METHOD: Data from a national survey of ASFPIs based on a random sampling survey (N = 17,565) were used to compare the homelessness rate among AFSPIs with that in the general population. Logistic regression was then used to examine the association of homelessness among ASFPIs with factors including symptoms, treatment of mental illness, previous criminal justice involvement, spec

Outbreak of beriberi in a prison in Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: A beriberi outbreak occurred in the Maison d'Arrêt et de Correction d'Abidjan (MACA), a detention center in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, between October 2002 and April 2003. OBJECTIVE: A retrospective investigation was conducted to document the outbreak in April 2003. METHODS: A descriptive analysis and a case-control study were performed. An ethics of testimony: prisoner nurses at Auschwitz.

This historical research report presents and analyzes 2 recently identified narratives of women who underwent sterilization experiments at the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. A description of the historical and contextual background is presented in which involvement of the prisoner nurse occurred in the sterilization experiments. Using a critical feminist perspective, the ethics of nursing involvement are discussed in these experiments, with an emphasis on the political dimension. Salient implications are explored for contemporary nursing.

An outbreak of Q fever in a prison in Italy.

We observed an outbreak of Q fever in a prison population. Overall, 65 of the 600 prison inmates developed the disease. The location of the prison cells had no apparent effect on the risk of infection. The outbreak was probably due to exposure to dust contaminated by a passing flock of sheep, which at the time of the outbreak was engaged in lambing. These findings highlight the possible emergence of Q fever in settings and populations not normally thought of as being at risk of exposure to the infection.

Psychiatric characteristics of female prisoners in Tasmania.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the paper is to describe some of the psychiatric, social and criminological features of female prisoners in Tasmania between 1981 and 1990 inclusive. METHOD: Data were collated from prison records for all 210 women prisoners incarcerated between the above dates. Using the Mental Health Services database it was determined which prisoners had prior contact with State Psychiatric Services, their clinical state, various demographic data and ICD-9 diagnoses. Forensic data obtained from prison records were compared for those with and those without a psychiatric history of atte

Decreased mortality among male prisoners.

The mortality among a population of male prisoners between 1977 and 1983 was compared with that among the general French population. The overall mortality rate (for all deaths except external causes) was lower among prisoners (SMR = 84; p less than 0.05). Moreover, the risk of dying from all causes, as well as from malignant neoplasms, diseases of the circulatory system, and suicides fell significantly with increasing duration of imprisonment. These findings suggest that the lifestyle specific to imprisonment might overcome the prejudicial effect of risk factors such as alcohol, tobacco, or dr

[Principle of equal access to healthcare for prisoners].

PRINCIPLE OF EQUAL ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE FOR PRISONERS. The law of 18 January 1994, which vested the responsibility for the healthcare of prisoners in the public hospital service, has enabled the development of a comprehensive range of healthcare services. However, equal access to healthcare for prisoners is not completely ensured, because the conditions under which medical care is provided in prison exacerbate the diff iculties experienced by the hospital system in general, and the healthcare provision, theoretically egalitarian, does not suff iciently consider the significant health vulnerabi

Health optimization of older people in prison.

This article examines the leadership challenges of prison healthcare, specifically focusing on the ageing inmate population. It highlights the distinct health burdens faced by this demographic, including higher disease prevalence and an accelerated ageing process. The concept of prison activities of daily living is central to addressing these challenges, emphasizing the need to tailor health assessments and care plans to the unique prisoner-environment interactions. This article advocates for inclusive person-centred care. It suggests that involving older prisoners in their care planning, alig

Oral care in the Spanish prison setting.

INTRODUCTION: Addressing the health problems of prison inmates is a major challenge for public administrations, which are responsible for guaranteeing the necessary services to deal with them. It is therefore essential to know which are the chronic pathologies that affect them most frequently, what impact they have on the oral cavity and what type of treatments are required. The aim of this study is to shed further light on these questions. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Articles in PubMed on chronic and oral pathologies and treatment needs were reviewed. RESULTS: The most prevalent chronic pathologie

Methylphenidate for prison inmates with ADHD: yes or no?

In a double-blind randomised controlled trial by Asherson et al., involving prisoners with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the rates of response to osmotic-release oral system methylphenidate (OROS-methylphenidate) and placebo were very similar (~50%). I critically discuss this trial against other international literature, highlighting the key issues in the field in terms of clinical practice and research.

COVID-19 dynamics in an Ohio prison.

Incarcerated individuals are a highly vulnerable population for infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Understanding the transmission of respiratory infections within prisons and between prisons and surrounding communities is a crucial component of pandemic preparedness and response. Here, we use mathematical and statistical models to analyze publicly available data on the spread of SARS-CoV-2 reported by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections (ODRC). Results from mass testing conducted on April 16, 2020 were analyzed together with time of f…

The mental wellbeing of female prisoners in Chile.

OBJECTIVE: To measure and understand mental wellbeing among women prisoners in Chile, as part of a larger study. RESULT: Sixty-eight sentenced prisoners in a women's prison participated in a survey, giving a response rate of 56.7%. Using the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS), the mean wellbeing score of participants was 53.77 out of maximum score of 70. Whilst 90% of the 68 women felt useful at least some of the time, 25% rarely felt relaxed, close to others or able to make up their own minds about things. Data generated from two focus groups attended by six women offered expl
