Oral chronic graft-versus-host disease: What the general dental practitioner needs to know.

BACKGROUND: Long-term survivors of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation will increasingly seek care from dental providers. METHODS: The authors highlight the importance of minimizing oral symptoms and complications associated with oral chronic graft-versus-host-disease (cGVHD). RESULTS: Chronic GVHD is the result of an immune response of donor-derived cells against recipient tissues. Oral cGVHD can affect the mucosa and damage salivary glands and cause sclerotic changes. Symptoms include sensitivity and pain, dry mouth, taste changes, and limited mouth opening. Risk of developing ca

The impact of changing provider remuneration on clinical activity and quality of care: Evaluation of a pilot NHS contract in Northern Ireland.

OBJECTIVES: A pilot NHS dental contract was introduced in Northern Ireland between 2015 and 2016, which involved changing the method for paying general dental practitioners working in the NHS from fee-for-service (FFS) to capitation-based payments, providing an opportunity for a robust evaluation. We investigated the impact of a change in payment methods on clinical activity and the quality of care provided. DESIGN: A difference-in-difference (DiD) evaluation was applied to clinical activity data from pilot NHS dental practices in Northern Ireland compared to matched control NHS practices and

Obstructive sleep apnoea and the need for its introduction into dental curricula.

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a major health problem which causes blood oxygen desaturation that may initiate a cascade of events via inflammatory cytokines and adrenocorticotrophic hormone that may have impact upon quality of life and lead to potential life-threatening events. Even though OSA affects an increasing number of individuals, the role of dental practitioners in recognition, screening and management has not developed accordingly. The goal of this article was to provide updated information to dental practitioners on pathophysiology, consequences and treatment options of OSA with

Pharmacists' medicines-related interventions for people with intellectual disabilities: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: People with intellectual disabilities (ID) have complex pharmaceutical care needs due to a high prevalence of multimorbidity, a notable degree of polypharmacy and a high risk of adverse drug reactions. Despite this, people with ID often experience significant health disparities compared to the general population. In most developed countries, increasing emphasis on deinstitutionalisation and community integration also means greater utilisation of primary health care services where general practitioners, pharmacists and carers may lack appropriate information about the pharmaceutical

[Update and review of oral lichen planus].

Lichen planus is a chronic mucucutaneous disease affecting the oral cavity in up to 2% of the population. It has variable oral manifestations, may be asymptomatic or accompanied by severe pain. It has features which are similar to autoimmune diseases although its pathogenesis is not fully understood. Stress is associated with exacerbations and dental materials and/or medications can cause lichenoid reactions. Some reports link hepatitis C with the condition. The chronic nature of the disease, its occasional severity, the fact it is considered a pre-malignant condition, together with its preval

Oral malodor: a review of the literature.

Oral malodor or halitosis is any unpleasant odor emerging from the mouth that is detected by others. Many patients experience extreme discomfort and embarrassment and therefore seek help for this problem. Oral causes, such as poor oral hygiene, periodontal disease, tongue coating, food impaction, unclean dentures, faulty restorations, and dry mouth, are far more common than nonoral causes of malodor. Management may include simple measures such as scaling and root planing, instructions in oral hygiene, tongue cleaning, and mouth rinsing. This paper reviews the current knowledge, etiology, diagn

Evaluation of professional pharmacy activities under advanced practice agreements for inpatients at the McGill University Health Centre.

BACKGROUND: A limited number of jurisdictions worldwide authorize independent pharmacist prescribing. Legislative reforms in Quebec (Canada) now empower pharmacists to independently perform certain professional activities. Since 2021, Advanced Practice Agreements at the McGill University Health Centre have enhanced pharmacists' clinical autonomy, though the scope of each agreement varies across units. Limited evidence exists on how these agreements influence prescribing practices. This audit aimed to describe pharmacist-written prescriptions at the McGill University Health Centre, and examine

Non-Offending Minor-Attracted Persons: Professional Practitioners' Views on the Barriers to Seeking and Receiving Their Help.

Individuals who are attracted to minors but have abstained from sexual offending (non-offending minor-attracted persons) are an under-researched, hard-to-reach population. The current study explored professionals' perspectives of the barriers this population faces in seeking and receiving help and how these barriers can be reduced. Twenty professionals read an original vignette and answered a series of questions via an online survey. Using an inductive thematic analysis, the accessibility of treatment and perceived risk of disclosure emerged as the main barriers to seeking and receiving help.

Comparing doctors' and nurses' accounts of how they provide emotional care for parents of children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the emphasis that communication skills training (CST) programmes place on attending to the emotional care of patients, evidence suggests that practitioners neglect this aspect of patient care. We describe and compare doctors' and nurses' accounts of managing the emotional care of parents of children with leukaemia, with the overall objective of examining how their accounts might inform training and policy. METHODS: Audio-recorded qualitative interviews with 30 doctors and nurses working in six UK paediatric oncology and haematology treatment centres were analysed interpreta

"It's Like a Whole Set of Things That We Do": A Qualitative Study of the Roles of Journal Editors-in-Chief.

INTRODUCTION: Journal editors-in-chief (EICs) play a central role in shaping scholarly publishing, yet little is known about how they understand and enact their roles. We explored how medical education journal EICs describe their roles in shaping the publication process. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study using thematic analysis of interviews with nine medical education journal EICs. The interviews were part of a broader investigation of publication timelines and explored editorial leadership and practices, including experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants' accounts also
