The integration of different sensory streams is required to dynamically estimate how our head and body are oriented and moving relative to gravity. This process is essential to continuously maintain stable postural control, autonomic regulation, and self-motion perception. The nodulus/uvula (NU) in the posterior cerebellar vermis is known to integrate canal and otolith vestibular input to signal angular and linear head motion in relation to gravity. However, estimating body orientation and motion requires integrating proprioceptive cues with vestibular signals. Lesion studies demonstrate that

Breast cancer (BC)-related sequelae drastically impact the psychophysical functioning and quality of life of affected women. Adapted physical activity (APA) has proved to effectively counteract these impairments in a non-medicalized framework. In particular, dragon boats are able to promote body functionality, social interaction, and quality of life in BC survivors, but the literature on specific motor gestures is scarce and practice is still based more on a re-educative perspective than a performative one. In this context, the present longitudinal study investigated the benefits of an adapted

BACKGROUND: Stroke patients often experience alterations in their subjective feeling of ownership for the affected limb, which can hinder motor function and interfere with rehabilitation. In this study, we aimed at disentangling the complex relationship between sensory impairment, body ownership (BO), and motor control in stroke patients.
METHODS: We recruited 20 stroke patients with unilateral upper limb sensory deficits and 35 age-matched controls. Participants performed a virtual reality reaching task with a varying displacement between their real unseen hand and a visible virtual hand. We

BACKGROUND: According to the Global Burden of Disease Study the prevalence of stroke worldwide has significantly increased from 1990 to 2019, making it the second leading cause of death worldwide. Approximately 70%-80% of stroke patients are unable to live independently due to disability.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the therapeutic effect of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) combined with muscle energy technique (MET) on post-stroke dysphagia.
METHODS: A total of 122 stroke patients with dysphagia admitted to our hospital from January 2017 to December 2020 were divided into the contr

BACKGROUND: The development and diversification of sensory proprioceptive neurons, which reside in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and express the tropomyosin receptor kinase C (TrkC), depend on the transcription factor (TF) Runx3. Runx3-deficient mice develop severe limb ataxia due to TrkC neuron cell death. Two additional TFs Pou4f1 (also called Brn3a) and Isl1 also play an important role in sensory neuron development. Thus, we aimed to unravel the chromatin state of early-developing TrkC neurons and decipher the Runx3 high-confidence target genes (HCT) and the possible cooperation between Run

Soft pneumatic actuators/robotics have received significant interest in the medical and health fields, due to their intrinsic elasticity and simple control strategies for enabling desired interactions. However, current soft hand pneumatic exoskeletons often exhibit uniform deformation, mismatch the profile of the interacting objects, and seldom quantify the assistive effects during activities of daily life (ADL), such as extension angle and predicted joint stiffness. The lack of quantification poses challenges to the effective and sustainable advancement of rehabilitation technology. This pape

Previous work has identified age-related declines in proprioception within a narrow range of limb movements. It is unclear whether these declines are consistent across a broad range of movement characteristics that more closely represent daily living. Here we aim to characterize upper limb error in younger and older adults across a range of movement speeds and distances. The objective of this study was to determine how proprioceptive matching accuracy changes as a function of movement speed and distance, as well as understand the effects of aging on these accuracies. We used an upper limb robo…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Frozen shoulder is a common painful disease of the shoulder joint characterized by structural changes in the shoulder joint, restricting both active and passive shoulder joint activities. Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) effectively improved and maintained the range of motion; however, it is not clear whether it can improve the shoulder joint structure in patients with frozen shoulder. This pilot study used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) observation to assess the improvement of the local structure of the shoulder joint upon PNF treatment to elucidate

Some authors have demonstrated that proprioceptive stimuli applied on the feet soles can interfere on the ocular muscles. However, these studies do not clarify possible functional differences between the dominant eye and the non-dominant eye. The purpose of this randomised study is to establish if the positioning of an Internal Heel Wedge (IHW) and an External Heel Wedge (EHW) can modify horizontal heterophoria, determine dissimilar behaviours between the dominant eye and the non-dominant eye. Forty-two healthy subjects, with a right dominant eye, were tested. The 1.5 mm-thick proprioceptive s

The purpose of this study was to retrospectively compare clinical results, including proprioceptive function, after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction between 2 groups using techniques that preserve and eliminate the tibial remnant. Forty-eight patients who were followed for at least 24 months after ACL reconstruction with 4-strand hamstring tendon autografts were enrolled in this study. They were then divided into 2 groups: the remnant-preserving group (group A, 26 patients), in whom more than 7 mm of the remnant tibial stump (approximately 20% of the mean length of the ACL) was

Inhibitory afferent inputs to pontine A5 noradrenergic neurons (A5 NN) are not known, except partial baroreceptor input. In spontaneously breathing pentobarbital-anesthetized rats, we registered 35 A5 NN that were activated by hypoxia (100% N2, 10 sec) by more than 5 times in comparison with the background. Cooling of retrotrapezoid nucleus (15°C, 6 sec) completely blocked the motor inspiratory output and A5 NN discharge frequency increased (23/23) by more than 7 times in comparison with the background values. The beginning of A5 NN activation coincided with cessation of inspiratory activity.
