STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS: Ectodermal dysplasia is a hereditary condition in which hypodontia is the second most frequently occurring sign. Hypodontia is associated with lack of development of the alveolar ridge and results in less volume of bone for support of conventional prostheses. Minimal development of the alveolar ridge can affect the bone volume available for the placement of dental implants.

An unconventional technique was used to address the challenge of exposed dental implant threads. From 1989 to 2005, 13 patients aged between 5 and 18 years had testicular prostheses implanted at the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, University Hospital, Malmö, Sweden. Clinical records of patients who underwent implant-supported rehabilitation according to the biologically oriented preparation technique (BOPT) principles were retrospectively analyzed. Records of 189 nonconsecutive patients who received 502 implants were reviewed. At the last follow-up visit (occurring on average 5.11 years after prosthesis delivery), 466 (92.8%) implants had a Gingival Index of 0, and 491 (97.8%) presented no bleeding on probing. BACKGROUND: Since Tjellstrom introduced in 1977 percutaneous osseointegration, the importance of osseointegrated implants has increased in the head and neck region. Implants and craniofacial surgery technology have been permanently improved and the use of extraoral osseointegration has expanded considerably. Nine cases are reported who had aneurysms of the ascending aorta and aortic valve incompetence and in whom aortic valve prostheses and aortic prostheses had to be implanted. Two patients had dissecting aneurysms. In five patients, the origins of the coronary arteries were involved, and these had to be implanted into the prostheses. Chest x-rays in two planes, kymograms and CT provided the diagnosis. The most important pre-operative examination in order to assess valve function and the origins of the coronary arteries is catheter angiography.
