Functional connectivity corresponding to the tonotopic differentiation of the human auditory cortex.

Recent research has demonstrated that resting-state functional connectivity (RS-FC) within the human auditory cortex (HAC) is frequency-selective, but whether RS-FC between the HAC and other brain areas is differentiated by frequency remains unclear. Three types of data were collected in this study, including resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data, task-based fMRI data using six pure tone stimuli (200, 400, 800, 1,600, 3,200, and 6,400 Hz), and structural imaging data. We first used task-based fMRI to identify frequency-selective cortical regions in the HAC. Six region

Effect of 24 hours of sleep deprivation on auditory and linguistic perception: a comparison among young controls, sleep-deprived participants, dyslexic readers, and aging adults.

PURPOSE: To test the effects of 24 hr of sleep deprivation on auditory and linguistic perception and to assess the magnitude of this effect by comparing such performance with that of aging adults on speech perception and with that of dyslexic readers on phonological awareness. METHOD: Fifty-five sleep-deprived young adults were compared with 29 aging adults (older than 60 years) and with 18 young controls on auditory temporal order judgment (TOJ) and on speech perception tasks (Experiment 1). The sleep deprived were also compared with 51 dyslexic readers and with the young controls on TOJ and

Pupil dilation uncovers extra listening effort in the presence of a single-talker masker.

OBJECTIVES: Recent research has demonstrated that pupil dilation, a measure of mental effort (cognitive processing load), is sensitive to differences in speech intelligibility. The present study extends this outcome by examining the effects of masker type and age on the speech reception threshold (SRT) and mental effort. DESIGN: In young and middle-aged adults, pupil dilation was measured while they performed an SRT task, in which spoken sentences were presented in stationary noise, fluctuating noise, or together with a single-talker masker. The masker levels were adjusted to achieve 50% or 8

Increased intensity discrimination thresholds in tinnitus subjects with a normal audiogram.

Recent auditory brain stem response measurements in tinnitus subjects with normal audiograms indicate the presence of hidden hearing loss that manifests as reduced neural output from the cochlea at high sound intensities, and results from mice suggest a link to deafferentation of auditory nerve fibers. As deafferentation would lead to deficits in hearing performance, the present study investigates whether tinnitus patients with normal hearing thresholds show impairment in intensity discrimination compared to an audiometrically matched control group. Intensity discrimination thresholds were sig

[The effect of anchor voices and visible speech in training in the GRABS scale of perceptual evaluation of dysphonia].

INTRODUCTION: Perceptual evaluation of voice quality remains a key standard for judgment of vocal impairment. The GRABS method has become a commonly-used scale for rating severity of dysphonia, but it has no published, standardised protocol to follow. Training is important for reaching good interrater agreement for its parameters; however, the references most often cited for the GRABS provide no guidelines for clinical administration, speech material or rating calibration. This study investigated the effect of anchors (standard reference voices) and visible speech (narrow band spectrogram) in

The relationship between MOC reflex and masked threshold.

Otoacoustic emission (OAE) amplitude can be reduced by acoustic stimulation. This effect is produced by the medial olivocochlear (MOC) reflex. Past studies have shown that the MOC reflex is related to listening in noise and attention. In the present study, the relationship between strength of the contralateral MOC reflex and masked threshold was investigated in 19 adults. Detection thresholds were determined for 1000-Hz, 300-ms tone presented simultaneously with one repetition of a 300-ms masker in an ongoing train of masker bursts. Three masking conditions were tested: 1) broadband noise 2) a

Differential effects of salicylate, quinine, and furosemide on Guinea pig inner and outer hair cell function revealed by the input-output relation of the auditory brainstem response.

BACKGROUND: Sensory hearing loss is predominantly caused by the destruction of cochlear outer hair cells (OHCs), inner hair cells (IHCs), or spiral ganglion cells (SGCs). There have been a number of attempts to differentiate between these etiologies of hearing loss, using various psychoacoustic and physiologic paradigms. PURPOSE: Here we investigate the potential of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) input/output function for such differential diagnosis. On the basis of the saturation of the OHC-based cochlear amplifier, it was hypothesized that selective impairment of OHCs would reduce AB

The intensitive DL of tones: dependence of signal/masker ratio on tone level and on spectrum of added noise.

In Greenwood [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 33, 484-502 (1961a)] the ratio of masked signal threshold to masker level (S/M) decreased about 4 dB at a masker level of about 50 dB SL, the 'transition' level, when noise bands were subcritical but not when supercritical. Schlauch et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 71, S73 (1982)] report a related result. A pilot study [Greenwood, Harvard Psychoacoustic Lab. Status Report 37, 8-9 (1961)] in which pure tones masked identical tones in-phase showed a larger change in S/M. Detailed tone-tone growth-of-masking curves from over a dozen subjects in 1967-69, and in 1960, a

Modeling within- and across-channel processes in comodulation masking release.

The relative contributions of within-channel and across-channel processes to perceptual comodulation masking release (CMR) were investigated in the framework of an auditory processing model. A generalized version of the computational auditory signal processing and perception model [CASP; Jepsen et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 124, 422-438 (2008)] was used and extended by an across-channel modulation processing stage according to Piechowiak et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 121, 2111-2126 (2007)]. Five experimental paradigms were considered: CMR with a broadband noise masker as a function of the masker s

Nonverbal auditory agnosia with lesion to Wernicke's area.

We report the case of patient M, who suffered unilateral left posterior temporal and parietal damage, brain regions typically associated with language processing. Language function largely recovered since the infarct, with no measurable speech comprehension impairments. However, the patient exhibited a severe impairment in nonverbal auditory comprehension. We carried out extensive audiological and behavioral testing in order to characterize M's unusual neuropsychological profile. We also examined the patient's and controls' neural responses to verbal and nonverbal auditory stimuli using functi

Motion-perception deficits and reading impairment: it's the noise, not the motion.

We tested the hypothesis that deficits on sensory-processing tasks frequently associated with poor reading and dyslexia are the result of impairments in external-noise exclusion, rather than motion perception or magnocellular processing. We compared the motion-direction discrimination thresholds of adults and children with good or poor reading performance, using coherent-motion displays embedded in external noise. Both adults and children who were poor readers had higher thresholds than their respective peers in the presence of high external noise, but not in the presence of low external noise

Effect of efferent activation on binaural frequency selectivity.

Binaural notched-noise experiments indicate a reduced frequency selectivity of the binaural system compared to monaural processing. The present study investigates how auditory efferent activation (via the medial olivocochlear system) affects binaural frequency selectivity in normal-hearing listeners. Thresholds were measured for a 1-kHz signal embedded in a diotic notched-noise masker for various notch widths. The signal was either presented in phase (diotic) or in antiphase (dichotic), gated with the noise. Stimulus duration was 25 ms, in order to avoid efferent activation due to the masker o

Age differences in fear retention and extinction in male Sprague-Dawley rats: effects of ethanol challenge during conditioning.

Pavlovian fear conditioning is an ideal model to investigate how learning and memory are influenced by alcohol use during adolescence because the neural mechanisms involved have been studied extensively. In Exp 1, adolescent and adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were non-injected or injected with saline, 1 or 1.5 g/kg ethanol intraperitoneally 10 min prior to tone or context conditioning. Twenty-four hours later, animals were tested for tone or context retention and extinction, with examination of extinction retention conducted 24h thereafter. In Exp 2, a context extinction session was inserted b

Intonation and gender perception: applications for transgender speakers.

Intonation is commonly addressed in voice and communication feminization therapy, yet empirical evidence of gender differences for intonation is scarce and rarely do studies examine how it relates to gender perception of transgender speakers. This study examined intonation of 12 males, 12 females, six female-to-male, and 14 male-to-female transgender speakers describing a Norman Rockwell image. Several intonation measures were compared between biological gender groups, between perceived gender groups, and between male-to-female (MTF) speakers who were perceived as male, female, or ambiguous ge

Auditory evoked magnetic fields in patients with absent brainstem responses due to auditory neuropathy with optic atrophy.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether auditory evoked fields (AEFs) can be used to objectively evaluate hearing in patients with absent auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) due to auditory neuropathy. METHODS: Subjects were 3 patients with auditory neuropathy, 1 male aged 29 years and 2 females aged 18 and 27 years, with absence of click evoked ABRs for bilateral ear stimuli at a level of 105 dB nHL. All patients also had optic atrophy. AEFs were measured with a helmet-shaped magnetoencephalography system for 2.0 kHz tone bursts of 60 ms duration to the unilateral ear. RESULTS: Bihemispherical AEF re

Perceptual distances of breathy voice quality: a comparison of psychophysical methods.

Experiments to study voice quality have typically used rating scales or direct magnitude estimation to obtain listener judgments. Unfortunately, the data obtained using these tasks are context dependent, which makes it difficult to compare perceptual judgments of voice quality across experiments. The present experiment describes a simple matching task to quantify voice quality. The data obtained through this task were compared to perceptual judgments obtained using rating scale and direct magnitude estimation tasks to determine whether the three tasks provide equivalent perceptual distances ac

Use of psychometric-function slopes for forward-masked tones to investigate cochlear nonlinearity.

Schairer et al. [(2003). "Effects of peripheral nonlinearity on psychometric functions for forward-masked tones," J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 133, 1560-1573] demonstrated that cochlear nonlinearity is reflected in psychometric-function (PF) slopes for 4 kHz forward-masked tones. The goals of the current study were to use PF slopes to compare the degree of compression between signal frequencies of 0.25 and 4 kHz in listeners with normal hearing (LNH), and between LNH and listeners with cochlear hearing loss (LHL). Forward-masked thresholds were estimated in LNH and LHL using on- and off-frequency maske

A diminished rate of "physiological decay" at noise offset contributes to age-related changes in temporal acuity in the CBA mouse model of presbycusis.

The persistence of afferent activity at stimulus offset was examined in mice as a function of age (experiment 1) and noise level (experiment 2), using a procedure devised by von Bekesy to study the physiological decay of afferent activity. Noise offset was presented from 1 to 10 ms (the temporal gap) prior to an acoustic startle stimulus, with an abrupt edge or a linear ramp having the duration of the gap. Noise offset inhibited the startle reflex, this effect declining with age. For young (2-3 months old) and "young-old" mice (18-19 months old), the abrupt offset was always more inhibitory th

Comparison of auditory deficits associated with neglect and auditory cortex lesions.

In contrast to lesions of the visual and somatosensory cortex, lesions of the auditory cortex are not associated with self-evident contralesional deficits. Only when two or more stimuli are presented simultaneously to the left and right, contralesional extinction has been observed after unilateral lesions of the auditory cortex. Because auditory extinction is also considered a sign of neglect, clinical separation of auditory neglect from deficits caused by lesions of the auditory cortex is challenging. Here, we directly compared a number of tests previously used for either auditory-cortex lesi

Assessment of mean auditory hazard incurred by occupational exposure to impulse noise.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the collective hearing hazard entailed by occupational noise exposure. METHODS: The Late Audio-Sonometric Index (LASI) is a global score recommended for following up hearing loss in groups of workers exposed to traumatic noise, combining: daily noise exposure level (L(EX,8h) in dB(A)); individual hearing threshold level at 3 kHz (HTL (3kHz) in dB); HTL(0)(3)(kHz) targeted at retirement; and 5 (or 10) years age bracket between 50 and 59 years of age. LASI=HTL(0)(3kHz) - HTL (3kHz)+10 log (age - 20) - 10 log (0.23×L(EX,8h) - 17.36). RESULTS: When L(EX,8h) exceeds 80dB(A)
