Chronic pain and severe disuse syndrome: long-term outcome of an inpatient multidisciplinary cognitive behavioural programme.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with chronic pain and severe disuse syndrome have pain with physiological, psychological and social adaptations. The duration and severity of complaints, combined with previously failed treatments, makes them unsuitable for treatment in primary care. DESIGN: A prospective waiting list controlled study. PATIENTS: A total of 32 patients with chronic pain for at least one year and severe disuse syndrome were included in an inpatient multidisciplinary cognitive behavioural treatment. METHODS: Patients were assessed before the waiting list period, before the clinical phase, a

The Social Lives of Infectious Diseases: Why Culture Matters to COVID-19.

Over the course of the year 2020, the global scientific community dedicated considerable effort to understanding COVID-19. In this review, we discuss some of the findings accumulated between the onset of the pandemic and the end of 2020, and argue that although COVID-19 is clearly a biological disease tied to a specific virus, the culture-mind relation at the heart of cultural psychology is nonetheless essential to understanding the pandemic. Striking differences have been observed in terms of relative mortality, transmission rates, behavioral responses, official policies, compliance with auth

HIV stigma trends in the general population during antiretroviral treatment expansion: analysis of 31 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, 2003-2013.

BACKGROUND: HIV-related stigma is associated with increased risk-taking behavior, reduced uptake of HIV testing, and decreased adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Although ART scale-up may reduce HIV-related stigma, the extent to which levels of stigma in the general population have changed during the era of ART scale-up in sub-Saharan Africa is unknown. METHODS: Social distance and anticipated stigma were operationalized using standard HIV-related stigma questions contained in the Demographic and Health Surveys and AIDS Indicator Surveys of 31 African countries between 2003 and 2013.

The relationship of multiple aspects of stigma and personal contact with someone hospitalized for mental illness, in a nationally representative sample.

The stigma of mental illness has been shown to be affected by personal contact with mental illness and by a belief in the genetic heritability of mental illness. We use data from a nationally representative survey to test whether the relationship of stigma with contact remains after taking into account the effects of genetic beliefs and other background characteristics. Contact was defined as a history of psychiatric hospitalization among respondents themselves, their family members, or their friends. Respondents answered questions about a vignette character with a mental illness. We found tha

Feeling by sight or seeing by touch?

We have addressed the role of occipital and somatosensory cortex in a tactile discrimination task. Sight-ed and congenitally blind subjects rated the roughness and distance spacing for a series of raised dot patterns. When judging roughness, intermediate dot spacings were perceived as being the most rough, while distance judgments generated a linear relation. Low-frequency rTMS applied to somatosensory cortex disrupted roughness without affecting distance judgments, while rTMS to occipital cortex disrupted distance but not roughness judgments. We also tested an early blind patient with bilater

Interpersonal disorder in schizoid and avoidant personality disorders: an attachment perspective.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the characteristics related to avoidant attachment of 13 schizoid/avoidant psychiatric outpatients and 20 nonschizoid/avoidant psychiatric outpatients. METHOD: Three scales ("maintains distance in relationships", "high priority on self-sufficiency" and "attachment relationship is a threat to security") differentiated schizoid and avoidant personality disordered patients from other personality disordered patients. RESULTS: The results are discussed in terms of the attachment and DSM diagnostic models of avoidant styles in relationships. CONCLUSION: The 2 groups of s

Psychological distress among Italians during the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) quarantine.

BACKGROUND: Quarantine as a preventive action to reduce people's exposure to a contagious disease has substantial psychological impact. We aimed to collect information on psychologically distressing experiences of Italians living in quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: From 6 to 20 April 2020 participants filled out an online questionnaire. Demographic and physical symptoms data from the prior 14 days of quarantine were collected. Psychological impact of quarantine was assessed by the COVID-19 Peritraumatic Distress Index (CPDI). RESULTS: In all, 20,158 participants completed th

Differences between school classes in preschoolers' psychosocial adjustment: evidence for the importance of children's interpersonal relations.

We examined differences between school classes with respect to three aspects of psychosocial adjustment at school, namely the extent that children in the class liked to play with each other, the number of teacher-reported behaviour problems, and children's feelings of wellbeing at school. The sample consisted of 1282 4- to 5-year-olds from 94 school classes and 51 schools, but due to nonresponse actual sample sizes were somewhat smaller for most analyses. Multilevel analyses showed that on average 87% of the variance was at the child level, 11% at the class level, and 3% at the school level. T

The effects of PERMA model-based positive psychological intervention on fear of disease progression and subjective well-being in patients after coronary artery bypass grafting: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) frequently experience fear of disease progression (FoP) and diminished psychological well-being during the postoperative recovery period. The PERMA model, encompassing Positive emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment, represents a comprehensive framework within positive psychology that may address these psychological challenges. However, the clinical effectiveness of PERMA-based interventions in cardiac surgery patients requires further empirical validation through retrospective analysis of real-worl

Improving Psychological Well-Being and Quality of Life in Rheumatoid Arthritis-Associated Interstitial Lung Disease Through Exercise and Pulmonary Rehabilitation: A Narrative Review.

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis-associated interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD) is a significant extra-articular manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis that contributes to morbidity, functional limitation, exertional dyspnea, fatigue and reduced quality of life. Current pharmacologic therapies address inflammatory and fibrotic pathways but do not target deconditioning, ventilatory inefficiency, skeletal muscle dysfunction or the high burden of anxiety, depression, impaired emotional well-being and reduced daily functioning. Objective: To synthesize the evidence supporting the use of structured e

Factors Associated With Sports Function and Psychological Readiness to Return to Sports at 12 Months After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Sports function and psychological readiness to return to sports (RTS) are important outcomes when evaluating rehabilitation after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). It is, however, unclear which specific factors contribute most to these outcomes. PURPOSE: To determine associations between demographic characteristics, objective measurements of physical function, patient-reported outcome measure scores, sports-related function assessed with the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) Sport and Recreation subscale, and psychological readiness to RTS assesse

Trans and Non-Binary Latin American Migrants in London: An Intersectional Analysis of Migration and Psychological Well-Being.

This study explores the experiences of trans and non-binary Latin American migrants in London, addressing a gap in research on queer migration and well-being outside the US context. Using semi-structured interviews and "walking interviews" with seven participants, this research examines the participants' migration motives, gender resocialisation, and interactions within queer and Latin American communities in London. A thematic analysis, guided by intersectionality and minority stress theory as theoretical lenses, produced four key themes: (1) Latin American culture and family dynamics: tradit

Mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic: Effects of stay-at-home policies, social distancing behavior, and social resources.

Social distancing is the most visible public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but its implications for mental health are unknown. In a nationwide online sample of 435 U.S. adults, conducted in March 2020 as the pandemic accelerated and states implemented stay-at-home orders, we examined whether stay-at-home orders and individuals' personal distancing behavior were associated with symptoms of depression, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), intrusive thoughts, insomnia, and acute stress. Stay-at-home order status and personal distancing were independently associated with higher symptoms

In search of an imaginary enemy: Catholic collective narcissism and the endorsement of gender conspiracy beliefs.

Gender studies have often been criticized for undermining family and religious values. In this paper, we argue that these criticisms exhibit the characteristics of conspiracy theories. We define gender conspiracy beliefs as convictions that gender studies and gender-equality activists represent an ideology secretly designed to harm traditional values and social arrangements. In two studies conducted among Catholics in Poland (Study 1 N= 1019; Study 2 N= 223), we examined the prevalence of gender conspiracy beliefs and their psychological concomitants. We hypothesized that gender conspiracy bel

Knowledge and attitudes towards disability in Moldova: A qualitative study of young people's views.

BACKGROUND: People with disabilities in the Republic of Moldova continue to experience considerable discrimination and social exclusion. The Moldovan government recently affirmed their commitment to promote community integration. However, there remains limited evidence to facilitate understanding of these issues, and barriers to the integrative process. OBJECTIVE: This study explored the knowledge and attitudes towards disability of young people within Moldova. METHODS: A qualitative approach was adopted and 3 semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted with schoolchildren (n = 12)

Does the central nervous system learn to plan bimanual movements based on its expectation of availability of visual feedback?

The correlation between gaze strategy and kinematics of bimanual movements was assessed using repetitive bimanual object transfers as an experimental paradigm. The hypothesis was that visual demand in such tasks is a critical bottleneck in determining bimanual coordination. Kinematics and eye movements were compared before and after practice of this repetitive task. New eye-hand coordination strategies emerged with practice. Also, with practice a systematic prioritization of the left hand movement to be 'primary' and the right hand movement to be 'secondary' emerged. This choice implied that t
