Development and psychometric testing of the coping with breast cancer threat instrument.

Women with a positive family history of breast cancer have a higher relative breast cancer risk. Research pertinent to this "at-risk" population has focused primarily on the early detection measures of breast self-exam, clinical breast exam, and mammography. Other specific primary prevention coping behaviors have received little research attention and, while there are instruments that measure general coping behaviors in the face of illness threat, there are no known instruments that measure coping behaviors specific to dealing with breast cancer threat. This study tested the psychometric prope

Effects of peripheral nonlinearity on psychometric functions for forward-masked tones.

Psychometric functions (PFs) for forward-masked tones were obtained for conditions in which signal level was varied to estimate threshold at several masker levels (variable-signal condition), and in which masker level was varied to estimate threshold at several signal levels (variable-masker condition). The changes in PF slope across combinations of masker frequency, masker level, and signal delay were explored in three experiments. In experiment 1, a 2-kHz, 10-ms tone was masked by a 50, 70 or 90 dB SPL, 20-ms on-frequency forward masker, with signal delays of 2, 20, or 40 ms, in a variable-s

Psychometric properties of the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale with young adolescents.

The psychometric properties of the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale (SCAS) were examined with 875 adolescents aged 13 and 14 years. This self-report measure was designed to evaluate symptoms relating to separation anxiety, social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic-agoraphobia, generalized anxiety, and fears of physical injury. Results of confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses supported six factors consistent with the hypothesized subtypes of anxiety. There was support also for a model in which the first-order factors loaded significantly on a single second-order factor of anxiet

Psychometric properties and predictive validity of the Mt Scale of the MMPI-2.

The College Maladjustment (Mt) Scale is a 41-item supplementary scale of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. It was designed to identify college students classified as maladjusted. Very little research has been conducted on the Mt Scale in the 40 years since its inception. The current study had the following four goals: (a) provide additional data on the internal consistency reliability, (b) examine the relationship between Mt Scale scores and various school-related domains, (c) examine the relationship between Mt scores and indices of distress (trauma exposure, post-traumatic str

Psychometric testing of the adolescent version of the Cook-Medley hostility scale.

Hostility, a phenomenon that has been linked to cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality, is often measured by the Cook-Medley hostility (Ho) scale. Although there is an adolescent version of the Ho scale, it has had little testing with only Anglo-American samples. This pilot study tested the reliability and validity of the adolescent version of the Ho scale with a multiethnic sample of adolescents. Sixty adolescents participated. Reliability was measured using Chronbach's alpha. The Ho scale was correlated with the Speilberger State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (1988) scales to dete

Psychometric properties of the maternal worry scale for children with chronic illness.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of a scale termed the Maternal Worry Scale (MWS) designed to measure maternal worry about children with chronic illnesses. METHOD: The sample consisted of 140 mothers of young children (mean age 8.2 years, 64% female) with a chronic illness (juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, or sickle cell disease). Maternal worry, depression, and anxiety, as well as information about the child's health and behavior, were assessed through structured interviews. RESULTS: The MWS had good internal consistency (alpha = .94) and test-retest re

Psychometric characteristics of revised Sociotropy and Autonomy Scales in college students.

Beck, Epstein, Harrison and Emery (unpublished manuscript, 1983) developed the Sociotropy-Autonomy Scale (SAS) to assess personality constructs that were considered possible vulnerability factors to reactive depression. Principal components and factor analyses of an expanded 93-item version of the SAS were performed with successive samples of undergraduates totalling 2041 Ss. Only 59 items were needed to establish the generalizabilities of one dimension of Sociotropy and two dimensions of Autonomy. Three subscales reflecting Sociotropy, Solitude and Independence were constructed from these ite

Further psychometric evaluation of the Fear Questionnaire: responses of college students.

This study presents evidence for the factor structure and psychometric properties of the Fear Questionnaire for college undergraduates. Fit indices of the 4- and 5-factor models identified previously were inadequate. Exploratory principal components analysis identified three factors, using data from Sample 1 (n = 208). LISREL confirmatory factor analyses supported generalizability of the three-factor model to Sample 2 (n = 200). Satisfactory reliability coefficients were obtained for the factor-derived subscales. Significant gender differences were obtained on 4 of the 15 items but not on the

Psychometric tests for assessment of brain function after solvent exposure.

Psychometric testing is a key issue in neuropsychological toxicology assessment. Evaluation of methods for assessing general intellectual impairment is necessary as conventional neurology has been shown to be insensitive to the neurotoxic effects of solvents and metals. This study presents an analysis of a psychometric test battery from an investigation of psycho-organic syndrome in a historical cohort of 96 metal degreasers with long-term exposure to solvents, particularly trichloroethylene. The neuropsychological test battery was a combination of Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS), Lur

Psychometric profiles and related pain characteristics of temporomandibular disorder patients.

The psychological characteristics of patients with temporomandibular disorders have received much attention in the literature. A multivariate clustering technique has been used in the study of psychological characteristics of other chronic pain conditions, and this has recently been applied to "temporomandibular joint pain" patients to develop homogeneous psychometric subgroups. The primary objective of this study was to determine if these subgroups could be replicated in a separate sample. A group of 109 consecutive patients, presenting with complaints of jaw pain, were administered a Symptom

Tripartite model of anxiety and depression: psychometric evidence and taxonomic implications.

We review psychometric and other evidence relevant to mixed anxiety-depression. Properties of anxiety and depression measures, including the convergent and discriminant validity of self- and clinical ratings, and interrater reliability, are examined in patient and normal samples. Results suggest that anxiety and depression can be reliably and validly assessed; moreover, although these disorders share a substantial component of general affective distress, they can be differentiated on the basis of factors specific to each syndrome. We also review evidence for these specific factors, examining t

Psychometric Properties of the Dyslexia Referral Checklist for English- and Spanish-Speaking Children.

Dyslexia affects 5%-15% of children, yet only 32% of U.S. fourth graders read proficiently. Early intervention is crucial for addressing reading difficulty (RD) risk. While most states require early dyslexia screening, there is a need for better tools and approaches for identifying students who may benefit from further evaluation, especially for students from Spanish language backgrounds. This study investigates the integration of teacher reports and direct assessments to enhance the accuracy of early identification. We evaluated the psychometric properties and concurrent validity of the Dysle

Comparing Psychometric Properties of Three Personality Functioning Scales in a Community Sample.

When multiple instruments are available for measuring the same construct, researchers and practitioners may face uncertainty about which one to use. This study evaluates factor structure, internal consistency coefficients, and intercorrelations between the Self and Interpersonal Functioning Scales (SIFS), the DSM-5 Levels of Personality Functioning Questionnaire-Short Form (DLOPFQ-SF) and the Personality Functioning Scales (PFS) and evaluate their concurrent validity in relation to levels of wellbeing, happiness, self-esteem, attachment styles, and the quality of interpersonal relationships. Adapting the acceptance of illness scale for Sinhala-speaking populations: a psychometric study.

BACKGROUND: Acceptance of illness is an important psychological process that influences how individuals adapt to the challenges and limitations associated with chronic diseases. Greater illness acceptance has been associated with better psychological adjustment, improved coping, and enhanced wellbeing among individuals living with chronic conditions. The Acceptance of Illness Scale (AIS) is widely used to assess individuals' psychological adaptation to chronic disease. However, a validated Sinhala version has not been available, limiting its use in Sri Lanka. This study aimed to culturally ada

Development and psychometric validation of the bullying experiences of the elderly scale in geriatric care.

BACKGROUND: Bullying is a common issue that undermines older adults' health and well-being yet often goes unnoticed. Despite its impact, assessment tools specifically designed to identify bullying against this population are limited. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop the Bullying Experiences of the Elderly (BEE) scale and evaluate its psychometric properties among older adults. METHODS: The BEE scale was theoretically grounded in Olweus's bullying framework, stereotype embodiment theory, and social-ecological theory. A three-phase cross-sectional design was used, including item generat

Psychometric validation of a community healthcare scorecard used for marginalized populations in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Achieving equitable and quality healthcare for marginalized groups remains a critical challenge in Bangladesh. Community perceptions are crucial for assessing healthcare system performance, yet tools like Community Scorecards (CSCs) often lack rigorous psychometric validation, limiting their usefulness for evidence-based policy decisions. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to psychometrically validate a 14-item CSC for measuring perceived healthcare service quality among marginalized populations in Bangladesh, using both Classical Test Theory (CTT) and the Generalized Partial Credit Model
