Zellweger syndrome - a lethal peroxisome biogenesis disorder.

Zellweger syndrome (ZS) is the severest variety of peroxisomal biogenesis disorder (PBD). This is a fatal hereditary, autosomal recessive disorder. It is characterized by the absence of peroxisomes in the cells which are essential for many metabolic functions especially beta oxidation of very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs). We report the case of a female Saudi toddler. She presented with dysmorphism, profound hypotonia, psychomotor retardation, seizures, and loss of hearing and vision with findings of optic atrophy. Biochemical study revealed significantly elevated level of VLCFAs, cerotic ac

Catatonia associated with epileptic seizures: A systematic review of case reports.

The association of catatonia with epileptic seizures is a rare phenomenon that is poorly understood and needs more clinical research. This systematic review included all published case reports of patients with catatonia meeting ICD-11 criteria associated with epileptic seizures, published until December 2021 in PubMed. Case reports were synthesized and results were expressed as percentages. In total, 42 articles with 52 case reports were included. Most patients were adults with a dispersed age (mean age 44.9 ± 19.3), slightly more males (59.6 %), with psychiatric history (76.9 %) of affective

Clinical Characterization of 2 Siblings with a Homozygous SPAST Variant.

BACKGROUND Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP or SPG) consists of a heterogeneous group of disorders, clinically divided into pure and complex forms. The former is characterized by neurological impairment limited to lower-extremity spasticity. The latter presents additional symptoms such as seizures, psychomotor impairment, cataract, deafness, and peripheral neuropathy. The genetic structure of HSP is diverse, with more than 72 loci and 55 genes identified so far. The most common type is SPG4, accounting for 40% of cases. This case report describes 2 siblings presenting SPG4, one presumptive a

Outcome of children born after pregnancy denial.

INTRODUCTION: Denial of pregnancy remains a phenomenon little known to healthcare professionals. Yet its repercussions are far from negligible. The aim of this study was to assess whether denial of pregnancy has an impact on the infant's development. PATIENTS AND METHOD: This prospective study included 51 full-term infants born in Nancy Regional Maternity Hospital between 1 January 2009 and 30 June 2015. In this study, the development of the children was followed longitudinally. We collected data during the neonatal period, at 9months, and at 2years of age from the infants' file and standardi

The effects of theta-burst stimulation on sleep and vigilance in humans.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has become a popular tool to modulate neuronal networks and associated brain functions in both clinical and basic research. Yet few studies have examined the potential effects of cortical stimulation on general levels of vigilance. In this exploratory study, we used theta-burst protocols, both continuous (cTBS) and intermittent (iTBS) patterns, to examine whether inhibition or excitation of the left dorso-lateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) was able to induce reliable and acute changes to vigilance measures, compared to the left dorso-lateral as

Hyperactivity induced by the dopamine D2/D3 receptor agonist quinpirole is attenuated by inhibitors of endocannabinoid degradation in mice.

The present study was designed to investigate the effect of pharmacological inhibition of endocannabinoid degradation on behavioural actions … ceptor-mediated hyperactivity. This finding might be relevant for therapeutic approaches for either psychomotor disorders (dyskinesia, corea) or disorganized behaviours associated with dopamine-mediated hyperactivity.

Effect of prenatal exposure to airborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on neurodevelopment in the first 3 years of life among inner-city children.

Our prospective cohort study of nonsmoking African-American and Dominican mothers and children in New York City is evaluating the role of prenatal exposure to urban pollutants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) , environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) , and pesticides, in the pathogenesis of neurobehavioral disorders. We used the Bayley Scales of Infant Development to evaluate the effects on child mental and psychomotor development of prenatal exposure to airborne PAHs monitored during pregnancy by personal air sampling. Behavioral development was assessed by the Child Behavior Chec

Subtypes of autism by cluster analysis based on structural MRI data.

The aim of our study was to subcategorize Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) using a multidisciplinary approach. Sixty four autistic patients (mean age 9.4+/-5.6 years) were entered into a cluster analysis. The clustering analysis was based on MRI data. The clusters obtained did not differ significantly in the overall severity of autistic symptomatology as measured by the total score on the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS). The clusters could be characterized as showing significant differences: Cluster 1: showed the largest sizes of the genu and splenium of the corpus callosum (CC), the low

Relationships between mood states and performances in reaction time, psychomotor ability, and mental efficiency during a 31-day gradual decompression in a hypobaric chamber from sea level to 8848 m equivalent altitude.

High altitude is characterized by hypoxic environmental conditions that may induce a set of pathological disorders, known as acute mountain sickness. In addition to the physiological symptoms, exposure to high altitude may also produce adverse changes in motor skills, mental efficiency, and mood states, including anxiety. In the present study, we investigated the relationships between mood states, including anxiety, and performance changes in reaction time, psychomotor ability and mental efficiency in eight climbers participating in the 'Everest-Comex 97', a 31-day gradual decompression in a h

Analysis of social interaction and proximity preferences in mice exposed to valproic acid prenatally.

It is established that exposure to the antiepileptic drug valproic acid (VPA) during the prenatal period increases the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorders (ASD). In this study, a multi-animal positioning system (MAPS) was utilized to ICR male mice as control (CT) and prenatal VPA-treated male mice in a shared environment, with the objective of investigating the effects of VPA on social interaction and social proximity. The results of the behavioral analysis indicated that the frequency, duration, and number of contacts were reduced in mice treated with VPA

[Ulcerative colitis in a 6-year-old boy with severe coeliac disease - a case report].

Coeliac disease is a chronic immune-mediated inflammation of the small intestine elicited by the gluten ingestion in genetically susceptible people. In coeliac patients there is higher incidence of other autoimmune disorders like type 1 diabetes or Hashimoto's thyroiditis. The coexistence of coeliac disease and inflammatory bowel disease is rare. The spectrum of presentation of coeliac disease and inflammatory bowel disease may be similar. However, those disorders require various therapeutic approaches. Thus, early recognition of the overlap between coeliac disease and inflammatory bowel disea

Examination of Driving Performance Across Autistic Drivers: A Meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: It is becoming evident that the unique challenges faced by autistic drivers are contingent on the driving context and specific skills required. This meta-analysis examined the driving performance of both autistic and nonautistic drivers, aiming to clarify the reasons behind inconsistencies in published findings and identify the relative strengths and challenges faced by autistic drivers. METHOD: This study was performed within a theoretical model of driving skills to break down the complex process of driving and identify specific strengths and challenges displayed by autistic drive

A case of dissociative fugue and general amnesia with an 11-year follow-up.

Dissociative fugue refers to loss of personal identity, often with the associated loss of memories of events (general amnesia). Here we report on the psychological assessment of a 54-year-old woman with loss of identity and memories of 33 years of her life attributed to dissociative fugue, along with a follow-up 11 years later. Significant levels of personal injury and stress preceded the onset of the amnesia. A detailed neuropsychological assessment was completed at a university psychology clinic, with a follow-up assessment there about 11 years later with an intent to determine whether chang

Moving, sensing and learning with cerebellar damage.

The cerebellum is a subcortical brain structure that is essential for learning and controlling movement. Recent work shows that the cerebellum also plays a role in certain perceptual abilities, beyond what would be expected secondary to poor movement control. This review covers these and other recent advances, focusing on how cerebellar damage affects human abilities ranging from sensory perception to movement control and motor learning.
