Development of rod function in term born and former preterm subjects.

PURPOSE: To provide an overview of some of our electroretinographic (ERG) and psychophysical studies of normal development of rod function and their application to retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). METHODS: ERG responses to full-field stimuli were recorded from dark adapted subjects. Rod photoreceptor sensitivity (SROD) was calculated by fit of a biochemical model of the activation of phototransduction to the ERG a-wave. Dark adapted psychophysical thresholds for detecting 2 degrees spots in parafoveal (10 degrees eccentric) and peripheral (30 degrees eccentric) retina were measured and the d

A concept for a research tool for experiments with cochlear implant users.

APEX, an acronym for computer Application for Psycho-Electrical eXperiments, is a user friendly tool used to conduct psychophysical experiments and to investigate new speech coding algorithms with cochlear implant users. Most common psychophysical experiments can be easily programmed and all stimuli can be easily created without any knowledge of computer programing. The pulsatile stimuli are composed off-line using custom-made MATLAB (Registered trademark of The Mathworks, Inc., http://www.mathworks.com) functions and are stored on hard disk or CD ROM. These functions convert either a speech s

Electrophysiological abnormalities in age-related macular degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Results from psychophysical tests indicate that in age related macular degeneration (ARMD) retinal function is globally impaired. Observations in single ARMD cases showing abnormalities of the electrooculogram (EOG) and electroretinogram (ERG) encouraged us to systematically examine ARMD patients by means of electrophysiological tests to confirm a global retinal dysfunction in ARMD. METHODS: Sixty-six patients with ARMD were examined clinically and by means of EOG, ERG, triple scotopic ERG, and fluorescein angiography (FA). RESULTS: EOG data were considerably reduced in ARMD. Assessment of patient recognition of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated olfactory loss and recovery: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: The clinical course of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) olfactory dysfunction remains poorly characterized, often limited by self-reported measures. Given the logistical challenges of psychophysical testing, understanding the longitudinal relationship between self-reported and quantitative measures can help accurately identify patients with persistent olfactory dysfunction. This study aimed to longitudinally correlate measured and subjective olfactory function in COVID-19 subjects. METHODS: A prospective, longitudinal study evaluating subjective and measured olfaction was condu

Changes in visual function and retinal structure in the progression of Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's Disease (AD) can cause degeneration in the retina and optic nerve either directly, as a result of amyloid beta deposits, or secondarily, as a result of the degradation of the visual cortex. These effects raise the possibility that tracking ophthalmologic changes in the retina can be used to assess neurodegeneration in AD. This study aimed to detect retinal changes and associated functional changes in three groups of patients consisting of AD patients with mild disease, AD patients with moderate disease and healthy controls by using non-invasive psychophysical ophthalmol

Multi-modal induction and assessment of allodynia and hyperalgesia in the human oesophagus.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Experimental pain models based on single stimuli have to some degree limited visceral pain studies in humans. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of multi-modal visceral pain stimuli of the oesophagus in healthy subjects before and after induction of visceral hyperalgesia. We used a multi-modal psychophysical assessment regime and a neurophysiological method (nociceptive reflex) for the characterisation of the experimentally induced hyperalgesia. METHODS: A probe for multi-modal (cold, warm, electrical, and mechanical) visceral stimulation was posit

Contrast threshold of random dot stereograms in anisometropic amblyopia: A clinical investigation.

The contrast thresholds of random dot stereograms were obtained for both anisometropic amblyopic and normal patients. The elevation of the contrast threshold found in both amblyopic and non-amblyopic eyes of the anisometropes reflects the relative strength of the binocular inhibition mechanism present. These findings were related to the standard clinical tests used in this investigation and other recent psychophysical and physiological investigations.

Modulation of neutrophil apoptosis by psychological stress and glucocorticoid.

Neutrophils play a pivotal role in host defense against bacterial infection, however, these cells may have a harmful effect on normal tissues under certain pathological conditions. We demonstrate here that apoptosis of these cells is modulated by psychophysical stress and its related hormones, suggesting that psychoneural systems may exert an effect on host defense through modulating neutrophil survival.

Postoperative and follow-up studies of spastic dysphonia patients treated by recurrent laryngeal nerve section.

Long-term results of surgical treatment of spastic dysphonia by RLN section are evaluated by means of perceptual psychophysical scaling and by the patients themselves. It is found that a significant reduction in spastic dysphonia symptoms occurs as a result of surgery, and that these results are maintained after long-term follow-up in the majority of patients. These experimental observations are in agreement with the subjective assessment of postsurgical communication by the patients involved in the study.

Evaluating the reliability of structured light entoptic tasks.

Human perception of polarised light, known as Haidinger's brushes, is linked to macular health but is typically too faint for reliable clinical use. Structured light can enhance these entoptic patterns, but the test-retest reliability of this approach requires validation. Here, we evaluated the reliability of a structured light-based psychophysical task in twenty-five participants (fifty eyes) across two sessions separated by one to fourteen days. Participants viewed structured light stimuli that produced rotating entoptic patterns and identified the rotation direction in a two-alternative for

Bayesian Linear Regressions Applied to Fibromyalgia Syndrome for Understanding the Complexity of This Disorder.

A better understanding of the connection between factors associated with pain sensitivity and related disability in people with fibromyalgia syndrome may assist therapists in optimizing therapeutic programs. The current study applied mathematical modeling to analyze relationships between pain-related, psychological, psychophysical, health-related, and cognitive variables with sensitization symptom and related disability by using Bayesian Linear Regressions (BLR) in women with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). The novelty of the present work was to transfer a mathematical background to a complex pai

Increased tactile sensitivity and deficient feed-forward inhibition in pathological hair pulling and skin picking.

An increasing body of evidence has linked pathological body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) to excessive sensory sensitivity and difficulty modulating sensory inputs. Likewise, neurobiological evidence points to deficits in feed-forward inhibition and sensory habituation in conditions with similar symptomatology. There is currently little evidence regarding potential physiological sensory abnormalities in BFRBs. The current study compared 46 adults with pathological hair pulling and/or skin picking to 46 age-matched healthy control participants on a series of self-report measures and obje

Similar phenotypes caused by mutations in OTOG and OTOGL.

OBJECTIVES: Recently, OTOG and OTOGL were identified as human deafness genes. Currently, only four families are known to have autosomal recessive hearing loss based on mutations in these genes. Because the two genes code for proteins (otogelin and otogelin-like) that are strikingly similar in structure and localization in the inner ear, this study is focused on characterizing and comparing the hearing loss caused by mutations in these genes. DESIGN: To evaluate this type of hearing, an extensive set of audiometric and vestibular examinations was performed in the 13 patients from four families

Blood synthetic cannabinoid concentrations in cases of suspected impaired driving.

Twelve cases of suspected impaired driving are discussed in which the drivers who subsequently tested positive for synthetic cannabinoid drugs underwent a psychophysical assessment. The attitude of the drivers was described as cooperative and relaxed, speech was slow and slurred and coordination was poor. Pulse and blood pressure were generally elevated. Horizontal gaze nystagmus was assessed in nine of the subjects, but was present in only two. The most consistent indicator was a marked lack of convergence. In all cases where a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) officer evaluated and documented im

Abnormal spinal cord pain processing in Huntington's disease. The role of the diffuse noxious inhibitory control.

OBJECTIVES: Our study is aimed to evaluate the spinal cord pain processing in Huntington's disease (HD) by testing both the temporal summation threshold (TST) of the nociceptive withdrawal reflex (NWR) and the functional activity of the diffuse noxious inhibitory control (DNIC) as form of supraspinal control of pain. METHODS: We enrolled 19 HD patients and 17 healthy controls. We measured threshold (Th), Area, TST and related psychophysical pain sensations of the NWR, at baseline and during and after activation of the DNIC by means of cold pressor test (CPT) as heterotopic noxious conditionin

Visual processing in pure alexia: a case study.

Whether pure alexia is a selective disorder that affects reading only, or if it reflects a more general visual disturbance, is highly debated. We have investigated the selectivity of visual deficits in a pure alexic patient (NN) using a combination of psychophysical measures, mathematical modelling and more standard experimental paradigms. NN's naming and categorization of line drawings were normal with regards to both errors and reaction times (RTs). Psychophysical experiments revealed that NN's recognition of single letters at fixation was clearly impaired, and recognition of single digits w
