Distal axonopathy does not occur without neurofilament accumulation in gamma-diketone neuropathy: comparative studies of normal and neurofilament-deficient quail.

The neurotoxic effects caused by chronic exposure to 2,5-hexanedione (2,5-HD) were investigated in normal and neurofilament (NF)-deficient quail (Quv strain). These quail were given 175 mg/kg per day of 2,5-HD intraperitoneally for 24 weeks. Five of nine normal quail showed clumsy gait. They had NF-rich axonal swellings in the distal parts of the peripheral nerves, ventral and lateral funiculus of the cervical cord, and cerebellar peduncles. Axonal degeneration consisting of accumulation of mitochondria, vesicles, microtubules and dense bodies was found distal to the axonal swellings. Testicul…

Diffusible factors produced by cultured neural retinal cells enhance in vitro differentiation of pineal cone photoreceptors of developing quail embryos.

The avian pineal is a photoreceptive organ and is believed to function as a circadian clock. Avian pineal cells are secretory rudimentary photoreceptors, and previous studies have demonstrated that there are two types of photoreceptors in developing quail pineals, one of which is rhodopsin-like immunoreactive and the other iodopsin-like immunoreactive. Much larger number of rhodopsin-like immunoreactive cells than of iodopsin-like immunoreactive cells were found in quail pineals, both in vivo and in vitro. In the present study we co-cultured pineal cells of embryonic quails with retinal cells …

Genetic Diversity, Reassortment Patterns, and Antigenic Characterization of Two H9N2 Avian Influenza Viruses Isolated from Quails in China.

H9N2 avian influenza viruses pose a persistent zoonotic risk owing to their broad host adaptability. Between 2024 and 2025, two H9N2 isolates (ZHY1022B2 and ZHY0417A11) were recovered from quail flocks in Hebei, China. Phylogenetic analysis clustered their HA genes within the dominant B4.7.2 subclade, but diverged into two subgroups (B4.7.2.2 and B4.7.2.1). Of particular interest was ZHY0417A11, which displayed a multigenic reassortment pattern-its PB1 originated from an H3N8 virus, PA and PB2 from H3N3, NS from H10N3, and the M gene was nearly identical (99.32%) to a human H3N8 isolate, where…

First isolation and identification of tembusu virus from naturally infected quails highlighting its cross-species transmission risk.

The Tembusu virus (TMUV) has become a major threat in waterfowl farming, causing decreased egg production and neurological issues in ducks and geese. Recent research shows TMUV can infect multiple species, raising concerns about its potential to become a zoonotic pathogen with significant public health risks. In this study, the TMUV strain GXLZ-2024 was isolated from an infected quail in Guangxi, China. Genomic analysis reveals 98.5 %-99.3 % nucleotide similarity with cluster 3.2 TMUV strains, and phylogenetic analysis places it in this cluster. The strain has two unique amino acid mutations i…

Circadian rhythms of corneal mitotic rate, retinal melatonin and immunoreactive visual pigments, and the effects of melatonin on the rhythms in the Japanese quail.

We investigated circadian ocular rhythms in the Japanese quail, Coturnix coturnix japonica. The birds were placed under light-dark cycles (LD 12:12), constant light (LL) and constant darkness (DD), and the retinas were dissected out at four-hour intervals throughout 24 h. Following measurements were performed. (1) Melatonin content in the retina was measured by radioimmunoassay. It was low in light and several folds higher in darkness under LD 12:12. The rhythm continued in DD, but disappeared in LL. (2) Mitotic figures in the corneal epithelium were counted. Similar rhythms to the melatonin c…

The neuroendocrine control of gonadotrophin release in the Japanese quail. III. The role of the tuberal and anterior hypothalamus in the control of ovarian development and ovulation.

Reproduction in the Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica), as in many other species, is controlled by the length of the daily photoperiod. The present experiments have investigated the neuroendocrine regulation of both the photoperiodically induced 'tonic' gonadotrophin secretion, which causes the development and maintenance of the ovary, and the 'cyclic' surge release of luteinizing hormone (LH), which stimulates ovulation. Areas within the anterior and tuberal hypothalamus were destroyed by means of electrolytic lesions while a small knife was used to isolate, to various degrees, the t…

New Findings in Developmental Studies of Laryngeal Mound With a Reference to Its Attached Structures in Japanese Quail (Coturnix coturnix Japonica).

The laryngeal mound (LM) formed the caudal part of the pharyngeal floor, which varied in position, shape, and length at different ages. This work aimed to study the morphogenesis of the LM in the embryonic and post hatching periods grossly, histologically, and by scanning electron microscopy using forty-eight Japanese quails. The LM primordia appeared on the 8th day of incubation as a raised elevation carried on a deep median symmetrical sulcus (glottis primordium). As a result of rapid differential LM parts growth, LM took different shapes with advanced ages, finally ending in a heart shape. …
