Current state of unhealthy living characteristics in Black/African American and Latino populations: Tobacco use.

Over the past six decades, the United States has significantly improved tobacco-related health outcomes through mass efforts in policies, research, and behavioral and clinical interventions. Disparities persist, however, among communities of color who continue to suffer disproportionate rates of cardiovascular disease and other tobacco-related morbidity and mortality. In this review, we synthesize and discuss the tobacco use lifecycle across the lifespan, with special attention paid to socioecological determinants of tobacco-use behavior among Blacks and Latinos. This review summarizes the per

Racial Disparities in Mortality During the 1918 Influenza Pandemic in United States Cities.

Against a backdrop of extreme racial health inequality, the 1918 influenza pandemic resulted in a striking reduction of non-White to White influenza and pneumonia mortality disparities in United States cities. We provide the most complete account to date of these reduced racial disparities, showing that they were unexpectedly uniform across cities. Linking data from multiple sources, we then examine potential explanations for this finding, including city-level sociodemographic factors such as segregation, implementation of nonpharmaceutical interventions, racial differences in exposure to the

The Impact of Race, Insurance, and Socioeconomic Factors on Pediatric Knee Injuries.

Disparities persist in pediatric sports medicine along the lines of race, ethnicity, insurance status, and other demographic factors. In the context of knee injuries such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures, meniscus tears, and tibial spine fractures, these inequalities affect evaluation, treatment, and outcomes. The long-term effects can be far-reaching, including sports and physical activity participation, comorbid chronic disease, and socio-emotional health. Further research is needed to more concretely identify the etiology of these disparities so that effective, equitable care is

The Paradoxical Protective Effect of Immigration on Colorectal Cancer Survivals.

BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether the place of birth would affect colon cancer survival. METHODS: An observational study of colon cancer pa … his difference persisted in local/regional disease and in cases with distant metastasis, and across racial groups. On adjusted analysis, US-born patients had worse disease-specific survivals (HR 1.28, 95% CI 1.24-1.33), and this effect persisted in all racial groups except in Asians. CONCLUSION: US-born patients have worse survivals than non-US born patients. …

Structural Racism and Oral Health Inequities of Black vs. non-Hispanic White Adults in the U.S.

Structural racism negatively affects the health of Black populations in the U.S. Black populations experience a higher burden of oral diseases, such as tooth decay, periodontal disease, and oral and pharyngeal cancers than other racial groups experience. Oral health literature refers to racial inequities in the context of social disadvantage. However, structural racism perpetuates those contributory social disadvantages, such as inadequate access to affordable housing, education, and employment. In addition, in states where nearly 50% of U.S. Black populations reside, there is an inequitable d…

The Changing Face of Beauty: A Global Assessment of Facial Beauty.

Beauty is difficult to define. The US population becomes more diverse by the day. Thus, traditional stereotypes of beauty in various ethnic groups become less applicable as diversity increases. Often, new and uniquely beautiful facial features and proportions emerge as different ethnicities converge. With the increased diversity in facial appearance comes increased variability in patients' goals. A successful cosmetic surgeon will cultivate an understanding of aesthetic ideals in different ethnic groups, nurture discussions with patients to determine their aesthetic goals, devise a surgical pl

Racial disparities in outcomes of operatively treated lower extremity fractures.

PURPOSE: Whether racial differences are associated with function in the long term following surgical repair of lower extremity fractures has not been investigated. The purpose of this study is to compare how race affects function at 3, 6 and 12 months post-surgery following certain lower extremity fractures. METHODS: Four hundred and eighteen patients treated operatively for a lower extremity fracture (199 tibial plateau, 39 tibial shaft, and 180 rotational ankle fractures) were prospectively followed for 1 year. Race was stratified into four groups: Caucasian, African-American, Hispanic orig

Melanoma in non-caucasian populations.

Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer and the sixth leading cause of malignancy in the United States. Non-Caucasians have a decreased overall incidence of melanoma, but African Americans and other ethnic groups often have more advanced disease at initial diagnosis and higher mortality rates than Caucasian populations. Patients with more darkly pigmented skin have a higher percentage of acral lentiginous melanoma, which presents on the palms, soles, and subungual sites and carries specific genetic alterations. Increased awareness of melanoma presentation in pigmented skin may help

Gestational diabetes and macrosomia by race/ethnicity in Hawaii.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes (GDM) has been shown to have long-term sequelae for both the mother and infant. Women with GDM are at increased risk of macrosomia, which predisposes the infant to birth injuries. Previous studies noted increased rates of GDM in Asian and Pacific Islander (API) women; however, the rate of macrosomia in API women with GDM is unclear. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between ethnicity, gestational diabetes (GDM), and macrosomia in Hawaii. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed using Hawaii Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitor

[The significance of sickle cell anemia within the context of the Brazilian government's 'racial policies' (1995-2004)].

This essay reflects on the social significance of growing interest in sickle cell anemia and other illnesses associated with the black body in Brazil. I explore the discursive network that has taken shape around the disease within the social context of its production. I first summarize anthropologist Melbourne Tapper's analysis of the United States program to fight sickle cell anemia in the 1970s, shortly after blacks attained victories in the civil rights movement. Tapper (1999) argues that one of the consequences of this policy was the creation of a responsible black citizenry. In the late 1

National surveillance for the human ehrlichioses in the United States, 1997-2001, and proposed methods for evaluation of data quality.

This report describes the data accumulated during the first 5 years of national surveillance for the human ehrlichioses in the United States and territories, from its initiation in 1997 through 2001. Reported cases of human monocytic and granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HME and HGE) and cases of "other ehrlichiosis" (OE), where the agent was unspecified, originated from 30 states. As anticipated, most HME cases were from the south-central and southeastern United States, while HGE was most commonly reported from the northeastern and upper-Midwestern region. State-level incident reports of 487 HME, 1,

Parasitic infections among the aborigines in Taiwan with special emphasis on Taeniasis asiatica.

According to the results obtained by our laboratory and the Department of Parasitology, Taipei Medical College, from 1995 to 1998, the overall infection rate of enterobiasis was 16% (4-29%) among 4,426 primary school students at 64 schools in 13 mountainous districts of 10 counties, and the infection rate of head louse infestation was 12% (3-26%) among 5,121 students. A continuous series of field studies on epidemiology and chemotherapy of taeniasis asiatica have been conducted between 1971 and 1992 among 27,359 aborigines in 88 villages of 14 districts in 10 counties and 3,104 were found to b

The heritability of malocclusion: part 2. The influence of genetics in malocclusion.

The relative influence of genetics and environmental factors in the aetiology of malocclusion has been a matter for discussion, debate and controversy in the orthodontic literature. This paper reviews the literature and summarises the evidence for the influence of genetics in dental anomalies and malocclusion. Among the conclusions are that, while phenotype is inevitably the result of both genetic and environmental factors, there is irrefutable evidence for a significant genetic influence in many dental and occlusal variables. The influence of genetics however varies according to the trait und

Morphological considerations of the first metatarsophalangeal joint.

This study was designed to examine the external morphology of the metatarsophalangeal joint and of the hallux. Approximately 187 first metatarsals and their associated proximal phalanges where measured for ten linear variables from human skeletal specimens housed in the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. The variables represented seven articular characteristics of the head of the first metatarsal, the length of first metatarsal, and the height and width of the base of the first proximal phalanx. Descriptive statistics for each of the variables are presented along with comparisons on gender a

Racial perspectives on kidney transplant donors and recipients.

Prior to undertaking a campaign to increase organ donation, demographic patterns of kidney recipients and donors were examined for our transplant center--the city and state in which it is located (Detroit and Michigan respectively). From 1984 to 1986 there were 964 kidney recipients in Michigan; 28% were black and 69% were white, whereas only 13% of the population in Michigan is black. As has been shown elsewhere in the United States, blacks have more end-stage renal disease than whites and thus require renal transplantation more often. There were 413 kidney donors from Michigan during the sam
