Homophobia: a challenge for psychosocial nursing.

1. In 1975, the American Psychological Association stated that homosexuality was not a disorder and that homophobia was a form of prejudice based on stereotypes. 2. Because homophobia, like racism or sexism, is learned, it can be unlearned. 3. People who feel homosexuality is a choice hold more negative attitudes toward individuals who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered. 4. Homophobia not only damages individuals who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered, but also limits heterosexuals by locking them into rigid gender-based roles.

The Social Determination of Racial Inequities in Oral Health Among Indigenous Peoples.

OBJECTIVES: To foster a critical analysis of the racial inequities affecting the oral health (OH) of Indigenous peoples in Brazil, framed by … hey are historically embedded. RESULTS: Racial inequities in OH are not determined by race, but by racism-a historical-political system of domination that violates civil rights. For Indigenous peoples, as victims of racialisation, this injustice reflects a colonial legacy of exclusion, state tutelage, extermination and violence. OH serves as a strong in …

INTRODUCTION: Black immigrant communities in Canada and Europe have faced disproportionate mental health challenges, further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Structural racism, social isolation, and cultural stigma are among the key factors contributing to mental health distress in these populations. This scoping review aims to explore the mental health outcomes, experiences, and access to care among Black African immigrants in Canada and Europe after the COVID-19 pandemic, using an intersectional lens that considers the combined impact of race, migration, and minority status. METHODOLOG…

Centering Community Voices: Evaluating Stakeholder Engagement in Pediatric Palliative Care Research.

CONTEXT: Black and Native American children in the United States experience disparities in serious illness care and outcomes which are compounded by systemic inequities. These disparities necessitate research approaches that center the voices of racially minoritized families, combat systems of oppression, and promote culturally humble care. Community-based participatory research (CBPR) emphasizes engaging affected communities throughout the research process. OBJECTIVES: In this evaluation, we assessed the engagement of a stakeholder advisory board (SAB) convened to guide a study about racism …

Promoting Health Equity for Children With Special Health Care Needs and Child Welfare Involvement.

Noah, an 18-month-old infant with trisomy 21, was brought to the emergency department for adenovirus bronchiolitis. He was found to meet criteria for severe malnutrition, and his medical team called Child Protective Services (CPS) with concern for neglect. He remained hospitalized for 1 month while a safe discharge was coordinated by the medical and CPS teams. Through this case, we explore racism as a root cause of discharge delays among children with special health care needs who interact with the child welfare system. Our discussion delves into the origins and consequences of racial dispropo…

Where I'm Livin' and How I'm Feelin': Associations among community stress, gender, and mental-emotional health among Black Americans.

RATIONALE: Structural racism is a primary avenue for the perpetuation of racial health disparities. For Black Americans, both historically and contemporarily, the neighborhood context serves as one of the most striking examples of structural racism, with stressful neighborhood contexts contributing to the well-documented inequalities in psychological functioning among this population. OBJECTIVE: Thus, in this study, we adapted an intersectional-ecological framework to investigate the links between community stress and multiple dimensions of mental-emotional health for Black men and women. Whilst the definition has … lack of clarity as to the Jewish people's 'right to self-determination', and its denial of obvious racism. We recognise that the Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism …

Where has the circle taken us? A conversation on sexual health promotion for sex-dissident populations.

This work discusses the health promotion challenges of men who have sex with men (MSM) through the use of data from a conversation circle with people from institutions that provide services to MSM in the Metropolitan Region of Recife. The results allow for the identification of the following challenges for health promotion work, not only for MSM but also for sex dissidents: difficulties with the use of identity categories, stigmatization for providing them with sexual health care, structural racism, the deprivation of liberty, extreme poverty, and literacy.

Assessing the Impact of a Culturally Congruent Perinatal Home-Visiting Program on Gestational Age at Delivery for Black Women.

PURPOSE: There is a Black maternal health crisis in America, with significant racial disparities in birth outcomes for Black women in Washington, DC. Programs designed to reduce these inequities must intentionally address the role of systemic racism and the ongoing legacy of oppression that is endemic to traditional perinatal care services. This article describes the findings from the quantitative analysis of an innovative perinatal program (Mothers Rising) designed by and for Black women in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area that was part of a larger mixed methods study. METHODS: Using da…

Racial inequities and addiction research.

What accounts for variation across racial and ethnic groups in drug use and harms related to substance use? While explanatory mechanisms for racial and ethnic disparities include differential access to and use of health services, a myriad of other factors, including racism and historical trauma, contribute to drug-related disparities. Furthermore, the addiction scientific workforce, like the full biomedical research enterprise, lacks diversity. This deficit undercuts U.S. scientific leadership and is a major challenge for the field. To address these entrenched problems, the National Institute …

Culturally-Based Communication about Health, Eating, and Food: Development and validation of the CHEF scale.

Ethnic minority populations in the United States are disproportionately affected by obesity. To address this disparity, research has begun to investigate the role of culture, ethnicity, and experiences with racism on food choices and health interventions. The aim of the current study was to develop and evaluate a new scale measuring the extent to which individuals' culture, as they perceive it, influences perceptions of food-related health messages. A diverse sample of 422 college students responded to the item pool, as well as surveys on race-related stress, self-efficacy in making healthy fo…

Place-Based Structural Disadvantage, Lethal Police Violence, and Adverse Birth Outcomes Among Black Birthing People.

Structural racism and lethal police violence shape community environments, particularly in urban and urban-adjacent contexts, and may influence reproductive health. While disparities in birth outcomes among Black populations are well documented, fewer studies have examined how these structural and state-linked exposures jointly pattern risk for adverse birth outcomes. Using 2020 National Center for Health Statistics natality data and Mapping Police Violence data (2015-2019), we analyzed associations between county-level lethal police violence, a multidomain. Structural Racism Exposure Index (S…

Intimate Partner Violence in Black Communities: A Scoping Review to Inform Black-Centred Prevention Efforts in Canada.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) remains a persistent burden in Black communities, yet dominant prevention approaches often fail to address the structural racism and discrimination that shape both exposure to violence and access to support. Guided by Critical Race Theory and Arksey and O'Malley's scoping review framework, this review synthesizes IPV literature from the United States and Canada to identify strategies centred on Black communities that may inform Black-centred prevention in Canada. A search of EBSCOhost, PubMed, ERIC, and Google Scholar identified 37 sources published between 2003…

Comparison of Black and White participants with severe mental illness in response to cognitive remediation as an augmentation of vocational rehabilitation.

PURPOSE: Despite evidence that cognitive remediation improves cognitive and employment outcomes in persons with severe mental illnesses (SMI), its effects have not been systematically compared between Black and White participants. Considering that Black adults have more negative experiences receiving mental health treatment, providers may have greater difficulty engaging and retaining Black Americans in cognitive remediation. Due to the effects of structural racism on reducing employment opportunities for Black Americans, it is unclear whether Black participants will reap the same benefits of …

Police killings of Black people and rates of sexually transmitted infections: a cross-sectional analysis of 75 large US metropolitan areas, 2016.

OBJECTIVES: Emerging literature shows that racialised police brutality, a form of structural racism, significantly affects health and well-being of racial/ethnic minorities in the USA. While public health research suggests that structural racism is a distal determinant of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among Black people, no studies have empirically linked police violence to STIs. To address this gap, our study measures associations between police killings and rates of STIs among Black residents of US metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs). METHODS: This cross-sectional ecological anal…

Gendered Racial Microaggressions and Black Women's Mental Health: Does Life Course Stage Matter?

Gendered racial microaggressions refer to subtle, yet psychologically injurious, interpersonal experiences rooted in racial and gender oppression. As a manifestation of gendered racism, Black women commonly report such experiences, yet this research primarily focuses on younger (e.g., college-attending) adults. Whether gendered racial microaggressions are most salient at specific life course stages (i.e., emerging versus older adulthood) remains unclear. Drawing from intersectionality, social stress, and life course perspectives, this study investigated whether life course stage (e.g., emergin…
