The aim of this study was to evaluate whether or not low radiation doses can induce an adaptive response in human lymphocytes exposed in vivo. We examined chromosome aberrations, micronuclei, radiosensitivity, and apoptosis in the peripheral blood of young radiation workers (mean age 35.8 +/- 9) with 14.9 +/- 5.2 years of occupational exposure to ionizing radiation. Adaptive response was estimated using two parameters of radiosensitivity: micronuclei and apoptosis. Baseline and radiation-induced micronuclei (2 Gy, 60Co gamma-rays) were assessed with the cytochalasin block micronucleus (CBMN) t

BACKGROUND: Patients receiving chest radiation therapy, or exposed to high radiation levels due to accidental nuclear leakage are at risk of radiation-induced lung injury (RILI). In innate immunity, macrophages not only exhibit certain radiation tolerance but also play an important regulatory role in the whole pathological process. Nervonic acid (NA), a long-chain unsaturated fatty acid found in nerve tissue, plays a pivotal role in maintaining normal tissue growth and repair. However, the influence of NA on RILI progression has yet to be examined.
AIM: This study aimed to assess the role of …

Low dose induced hyper-radiosensitivity refers to the acquired sensitivity to ionizing radiation due to the exposure to radiation doses <1Gy. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate whether induction of the hyper-radiosensitivity phenomenon in prostate cancer cells could improve the outcome of 177Lu-iPSMA therapy. Reduction in viability, loss of clonal expansion capacity and decrease of LNCaP prostate cancer cells survival by the promotion of cell apoptosis, is enhanced by gamma irradiation at doses of less than 1 Gy (60Co Gammacell 220 system, 0.24 Gy/min) prior to administrat

BACKGROUND: Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a major cancer type, is usually treated with radiotherapy but encounters challenges with resistance and toxicity. Therefore, the treatment of non-Hodgkin lymphoma needs agents to be very effective while protecting healthy cells. Blueberry extract, rich in micronutrients, flavonoids, and bioactive compounds, may inhibit cancer cell growth and induce apoptosis without harming normal cells.
OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the efficacy of blueberry extract in combination with radiotherapy as a radiosensitizer on Raji cells, a model for highly invasive non-Hod

BACKGROUND: Both epidemiological and animal studies have previously indicated a link between in utero radiation exposure and birth defects such as microphthalmos, anophthalmos, and exencephaly. However, detailed knowledge on embryonic radiosensitivity during different stages of neurulation is limited, especially in terms of neural tube defect and eye defect development.
METHODS: To assess the most radiosensitive stage during neurulation, pregnant C57BL6/J mice were X-irradiated (0.5 Gy or 1.0 Gy) at embryonic days (E)7, E7.5, E8, E8.5, or E9. Next, the fetuses were scored macroscopically for

Radiotherapy is not currently informed by the genetic composition of an individual patient's tumour. To identify genetic features regulating survival after DNA damage, here we conduct large-scale profiling of cellular survival after exposure to radiation in a diverse collection of 533 genetically annotated human tumour cell lines. We show that sensitivity to radiation is characterized by significant variation across and within lineages. We combine results from our platform with genomic features to identify parameters that predict radiation sensitivity. We identify somatic copy number alteratio

Mobile telecommunications have developed considerably in recent years. With the proliferation of wireless technologies, there is much public anxiety about the potential health impact associated with exposure to radiofrequency (RF) radiation from these novel products. Contradictory scientific evidence, often reported in the popular media, has further fueled public concern. Some epidemiological studies have reported that ipsilateral use of a mobile phone is associated with an increased risk for brain tumors, while other studies have reported an association between brain tumor risk and mobile pho

Susceptibility to gamma-ray induction of thymic lymphomas in mouse strains is controlled by low-penetrance genetic variant alleles. Our previous genome-wide scan of a mouse backcross between BALB/c and MSM strains suggested the existence of a BALB/c resistance locus near D5Mit5 on chromosome 5. To confirm this resistance, we produced congenic mice carrying a 28.4 cM region between D5Mit4 and D5Mit315 from the MSM parental strain on the BALB/c background. Lymphomas were induced in their progeny by gamma-ray irradiation or administration of N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU), an alkylating agent. The

The influence of perturbation of the physiologic state of the whole body on the outcome of radiation exposure has been examined in a rat foot model. Irradiation was carried out using 60Co gamma-rays. Moist desquamation was used as an endpoint. Rats were given a priming dose of 2 Gy, 4 Gy or 7 Gy to their whole body except their hind feet (partial body priming dose). After a variable time period both hind feet of these animals were irradiated with graded doses of 60Co gamma-rays. The incidence of moist desquamation in the irradiated feet of these animals was compared with the incidence of moist

SCID (severe combined immunodeficiency) fibroblasts established from C.B 17-scid/scid embryos showed higher sensitivity to high (1.105 Gy/min) and low (0.00069 Gy/min) dose rate gamma-rays and also to 5-fluorouracil, a cancer sedative producing double-strand breaks, than wildtype cells from C.B17- +/+ embryos. Furthermore, SCID cells were deficient in repairing DNA damage induced by high dose rate gamma-rays even after dose fractionation and after 24 h recovery periods, while wildtype cells showed an apparent repair ability on DNA damage after these gamma-ray exposures. This is the first repor

A minimal dose of soft x-ray irradiation of 4.6 Gy is expected to produce ocular anomalies on gestational day 9. A study was performed to determine whether ocular anomalies are induced in rat F1 offspring at this dose level on gestational days 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11. Eyes were examined during postnatal week 5 using indirect ophthalmoscopy and biomicroscopy. Anophthalmia (1.3% and 12.1%), microphthalmia (3.8% and 6.9%), iris coloboma (3.8% and 6.9%) and choroidal coloboma (2.5% and 8.6%) were observed in the gestational day 8 and 9 treatment groups, respectively. There were no treatment-related

Background: Current radiotherapy regimens for glioblastoma (GBM) have limited efficacy and fails to eradicate tumors. Regenerative medicine brings hope for repairing damaged tissue, opening opportunities for elevating the maximum acceptable radiation dose. In this study, we explored the effect of ultra-high dose fractionated radiation on tumor responses and brain injury in immunocompetent mice which can better mimic the tumor-host interactions observed in patients. We also evaluated the role of the hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha under radiation as potential target for combating radiation-ind

BACKGROUND: Cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) contact is thought to have great impact on cellular mechanisms resulting in increased cell survival upon exposure to ionizing radiation. Several human tumor cell lines and normal human fibroblastic cell strains of different origin, all of them expressing the wide-spread and important integrin subunit beta1, were irradiated, and clonogenic cell survival, beta 1-integrin cell surface expression, and adhesive functionality were investigated.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Human tumor cell lines A172 (glioblastoma), PATU8902 (pancreas carcinoma), SKMES1 (lung ca

Duck embryo was studied as a model for assessing the effects of microbeam radiation therapy (MRT) on the human infant brain. Because of the high risk of radiation-induced disruption of the developmental process in the immature brain, conventional wide-beam radiotherapy of brain tumors is seldom carried out in infants under the age of three. Other types of treatment for pediatric brain tumors are frequently ineffective. Recent findings from studies in Grenoble on the brain of suckling rats indicate that MRT could be of benefit for the treatment of early childhood tumors. In our studies, duck em

PURPOSE: Addition of adjuvant capecitabine improves overall survival for patients with breast cancer lacking pathologic complete response to standard-of-care neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Combining radiosensitizing capecitabine concurrent with radiation may further improve disease control, although the feasibility and tolerability of chemoradiation in this setting is unknown. This study aimed to determine the feasibility of this combination. Secondary objectives included the effect of chemoradiation on physician-reported toxicity, patient-reported skin dermatitis, and patient-reported quality of l
