Impact of an artificial intelligence deep-learning reconstruction algorithm for CT on image quality and potential dose reduction: A phantom study.

BACKGROUND: Recently, computed tomography (CT) manufacturers have developed deep-learning-based reconstruction algorithms to compensate for the limitations of iterative reconstruction (IR) algorithms, such as image smoothing and the spatial resolution's dependence on contrast and dose levels. PURPOSE: To assess the impact of an artificial intelligence deep-learning reconstruction (AI-DLR) algorithm on image quality and dose reduction compared with a hybrid IR algorithm in chest CT for different clinical indications. METHODS: Acquisitions on the CT American College of Radiology (ACR) 464 and

Automatic orbital computed tomography coordinating method and quantitative error evaluation based on signed distance field.

BACKGROUND: Orbital computed tomography (CT) is commonly used for the diagnosis and digital evaluation of orbital diseases. Yet, this approach requires longer scanning time, increased radiation exposure, and, especially, difficult patient positioning that can affect judgment and data processing. According to high-quality research on orbital imaging, computer-assisted surgery, and artificial intelligent diagnostic development, the correction of a coordinate system is a necessary procedure. Nevertheless, existing manual calibration methods are challenging to reproduce and there is no objective e

Dual-Energy Computed Tomography-How Accurate Is Gemstone Spectrum Imaging Metal Artefact Reduction? Its Application to Orthopedic Metal Implants.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the accuracy and suitability of dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) in scanning metals used in orthopedic implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four metal phantoms (Cobalt Chrome, Titanium Grade 5, Stainless Steel 316, and Stainless Steel 630), commonly used materials in orthopedic implants, were scanned by conventional, polychromatic CT as well as Gemstone Spectrum Imaging (GSI) DECT, with and without metal artefact reduction software (MARS). Scans were assessed for artefact based on Hounsfield unit values; and surfaces generated, based on a Canny edge detection algorithm.

Realization of masticatory movement by 3-dimensional simulation of the temporomandibular joint and the masticatory muscles.

Masticatory muscles are closely involved in mastication, pronunciation, and swallowing, and it is therefore important to study the specific functions and dynamics of the mandibular and masticatory muscles. However, the shortness of muscle fibers and the diversity of movement directions make it difficult to study and simplify the dynamics of mastication. The purpose of this study was to use 3-dimensional (3D) simulation to observe the functions and movements of each of the masticatory muscles and the mandible while chewing. To simulate the masticatory movement, computed tomographic images were

Assessment of patient dose and image quality for cardiac CT with breast shields.

Breast shielding can reduce dose to the female breast, a radiosensitive organ receiving significant radiation during computed tomography (CT) chest examinations, particularly in cardiac CT, where Electrocardiogram dose modulation currently precludes the use of radial dose modulation to reduce breast dose. However, breast shields may produce artefacts affecting interpretation of coronary arteries. This study explores the dose savings and the effect of breast shields on image quality with torso and CT dose index body phantoms and an organ dose calculator. Change in dose calculated: 53-63 % (fema

Nasal and ethmoidal alterations in anterior synostotic plagiocephaly.

BACKGROUND: Nasal deviation plays an important role in plagiocephaly nosography, and it is frequent in plagiocephaly and objectivable both in early treated patients and in those patients who did not undergo any surgical correction. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The group analyzed consisted of 12 patients affected by anterior synostotic plagiocephaly. All of them had reached the end of growth. A morphological analysis was made by using anthropometry. All patients were asked to undergo computed tomography, and all the scans were then reconstructed into three-dimensional models using a dedicated softwar

Analysis of manual segmentation in paranasal CT images.

Manual segmentation is often used for evaluation of automatic or semi-automatic segmentation. The purpose of this paper is to describe the inter and intraindividual variability, the dubiety of manual segmentation as a gold standard and to find reasons for the discrepancy. We realized two experiments. In the first one ten ENT surgeons, ten medical students and one engineer outlined the right maxillary sinus and ethmoid sinuses manually on a standard CT dataset of a human head. In the second experiment two participants outlined maxillary sinus and ethmoid sinuses five times consecutively. Manual

Closed-loop small-bowel obstruction: diagnostic patterns by multidetector computed tomography.

Multidetector computed tomography is a highly accurate method in evaluating high-grade intestinal obstruction. Closed-loop obstruction is a relatively uncommon subcategory of small-bowel obstruction; however, it is associated with a high risk of vascular impairment and is, therefore, important to diagnose accurately. Closed-loop obstruction is often caused by conditions such as internal hernias, congenital bands, postoperative adhesions, and malrotation. The purpose of this article is to review the imaging features of closed-loop bowel obstruction and various underlying conditions. Special emp

Injuries to the carpal bones revisited.

Falls on the outstretched hand, with resultant pain in the carpal region, account for a significant number of referrals to emergency rooms worldwide. Not only do they represent a significant proportion of the radiological workload arising from emergency rooms, interpretation of the images acquired is often difficult due to the complex anatomy of this region, compounded by an inability to obtain adequate views due to patient discomfort. Often, despite apparently normal radiological examinations, patient discomfort persists, prompting a need for further imaging. It is vital that the radiologist

In vitro evaluation of coronary stents and in-stent stenosis using a dynamic cardiac phantom and a 64-detector row CT scanner.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study was to examine the ability of a 64-slice MDCT to detect in-stent stenoses in an ex vivo model of coronary stents. METHODS: Five different stents (Liberté, Boston Scientific; Driver, Medtronic; Multi-Link Vision, Guidant; Taxus Express, Boston Scientific; Cypher, Cordis) were examined using a dynamic cardiac phantom. The stents were pulled over a vessel model that consists of a polymer tube with diameters of 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0 mm and four different degrees of stenoses (0%; 30%; 50%; 70-80%). This model was moved with a rate of 60 bpm to mimic cardiac motion. T

Computed tomography in various fields outside medicine.

CT has been widely used for non-medical purposes, for which, as in medicine, it has the advantage of being non-destructive and having a high spatial and density resolution. CT may help to generate 3-D views which could otherwise be obtained only by dissecting the object. There is almost no limitation with regard to X-ray exposure and scanning time. Dedicated techniques, e.g., rotating the specimen between stationary tube and detector, have been developed. Micro-CT may provide a spatial resolution up to 1 microm. Fields where CT has been successfully applied are archaeology, soil science, the t

Detection of small pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma: The potential of cinematic rendering in earlier lesion detection.

Small pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (PDACs) generally have a more favorable prognosis; however, up to 40 % may be missed on CT scan. Cinematic rendering (CR) is a novel three-dimensional post-processing technique that accentuates subtle textural differences and holds the potential to improve detection of small tumors. It utilizes a complex global lighting model generating photorealistic images with enhanced visualization of shadows and texture based on volumetric scalar fields (Hounsfield units). While CR has been studied for pre-surgical planning and vascular anatomy assessment, its role

Detection of a double right coronary artery with 16-row multidetector computed tomography.

We present the case of a 46-year-old male patient with known history of coronary artery disease and recurrent episodes of angina pectoris. Coronary angiography revealed two vessels originating from the right coronary sinus. However, a clear distinction between a double RCA and a high take off of a large right ventricular branch could not be made. Contrast-enhanced MDCT was performed on a 16-row scanner which clearly depicted cardiac anatomy and finally established the diagnosis of a double RCA. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a true double RCA diagnosed by MDCT.

Quantifying features from X-ray images to assess early stage knee osteoarthritis.

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a progressive degenerative joint disease and a leading cause of disability worldwide. Manual diagnosis of KOA from X-ray images is subjective and prone to inter- and intra-observer variability, making early detection challenging. While deep learning (DL)-based models offer automation, they often require large labeled datasets, lack interpretability, and do not provide quantitative feature measurements. Our study presents an automated KOA severity assessment system that integrates a pretrained DL model with image processing techniques to extract and quantify key KOA
