Key Challenges and Future Directions When Running Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) Research Protocols with Newborns: A Music and Language EEG Feasibility Study.

Although many musical intervention studies exist in the wider framework of neuroscience and psychology, the preliminary importance of feasibility studies is rarely discussed. Adding to this fact the limited research existing on the therapeutic and restorative potential of music exposure during early developmental periods, pushed us to concentrate on investigating newborns' perception of music and its impact on the brain. Here, we explore the feasibility of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) approach when measuring and comparing the neurophysiological perception of music versus language on the

Asymptomatic common extensor tendon pathology in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and lateral epicondylitis are both highly prevalent conditions. Our objective was to determine the prevalence of B-mode ultrasound abnormalities of the common extensor tendon (CET) in patients with CTS and establish the relationship between CET stiffness, as measured by shear wave elastography (SWE) and CTS severity. METHODS: Patients without symptoms or signs of lateral epicondylitis were recruited from referrals to a neurophysiology laboratory for possible CTS. These patients were examined for clinical features of CTS before undergoing electro

Linear and Nonlinear EEG-Based Functional Networks in Anxiety Disorders.

Electrocortical network dynamics are integral to brain function. Linear and nonlinear connectivity applications enrich neurophysiological investigations into anxiety disorders. Discrete EEG-based connectivity networks are unfolding with some homogeneity for anxiety disorder subtypes. Attenuated delta/theta/beta connectivity networks, pertaining to anterior-posterior nodes, characterize panic disorder. Nonlinear measures suggest reduced connectivity of ACC as an executive neuro-regulator in germane "fear circuitry networks" might be more central than considered. Enhanced network complexity and

A posterior-only approach for treatment of severe adolescent idiopathic scoliosis with pedicle screw fixation: A case series.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) can lead to severe deformity. However, early detection and treatment can prevent its progression. Surgical instrumentation for scoliosis treatment has evolved from Harrington instrumentation to pedicle screws. However, there are still some concerns about the efficacy and long-term effects of pedicle screw fixation, and the clinical and radiographic outcomes of surgical treatment for severe AIS (>90°) by posterior spinal fusion alone need to be established. PRESENTATION OF CASE: Eight patients with severe and rigid idiopathic scoliosis were r

Nonverbal behaviors are associated with increased vagal activity in major depressive disorder: Implications for the polyvagal theory.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with impairments in nonverbal behaviors (NVBs) and vagal activity. The polyvagal theory proposes that vagal activity regulates heart rate and NVBs by modulating a common anatomically and neurophysiologically discrete social engagement system. However, the association between these putative endophenotypes has not yet been explored. We hypothesize that in MDD, NVBs indicating positive affects and social interest and those indicating negative feelings and social disinterest could be associated with different patterns of vagal activity. Mild Lafora disease: clinical, neurophysiologic, and genetic findings.

We report clinical, neurophysiologic, and genetic features of an Italian series of patients with Lafora disease (LD) to identify distinguishing features of those with a slowly progressive course. Twenty-three patients with LD (17 female; 6 male) were recruited. Mean age (± SD) at the disease onset was 14.5 ± 3.9 years and mean follow-up duration was 13.2 ± 8.0 years. NHLRC1 mutations were detected in 18 patients; EPM2A mutations were identified in 5. Patients who maintained >10 years gait autonomy were labeled as "mild" and were compared with the remaining LD patients with a typical course. Si

Extra-median spread of sensory symptoms in carpal tunnel syndrome suggests the presence of pain-related mechanisms.

Patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) may complain of sensory symptoms outside the typical median nerve distribution. The study is aimed to understand which clinical features are associated with the extra-median distribution of symptoms in CTS. We recruited 241 consecutive CTS patients. After selection, 103 patients (165 hands) were included. The symptoms distribution was evaluated with a self-administered hand symptoms diagram. Patients underwent objective evaluation, neurographic study and a self-administered questionnaire on subjective complaints. No clinical or electrodiagnostic signs

Data-driven upper limb sensorimotor recovery prediction in patients with stroke: A prospective cohort study.

Stroke is a major cause of long-term disability globally, with upper limb sensorimotor deficits being among the most debilitating consequences. Accurate prediction of recovery trajectories can help clinicians individualise rehabilitation planning and optimize resource allocation, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where access to high-cost neurophysiological or imaging tools is limited. This protocol describes a prospective cohort study designed to develop and validate both conventional statistical and machine learning-based models for predicting upper limb sensorimotor

Maturational Changes in Action-Effect Integration Processes Are Reflected by Changes in the Directed Cortical Network Communication.

Acting intentionally is a major aspect of human cognitive development and depends on the ability to link actions with their consequences. Action-effect binding (AEB) is a fundamental mechanism enabling this. While AEB has been well-characterized in adults, its neurophysiological underpinnings during adolescence remain unclear. This study investigates differences between adolescence and adulthood in the directed cortical network communication underlying AEB. Using an EEG frequency tagging approach, we examined differences in theta-driven directed connectivity between adolescents and adults. Our

Revealing Pathological Auditory Central Inhibition in Tinnitus Using Cortical Auditory Evoked Potentials Responses to Contralateral Acoustic Stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that auditory central inhibition is reduced in tinnitus patients and explore whether improving this inhibitory function could alleviate tinnitus severity. METHODS: We recruited 16 chronic tinnitus patients and 14 age-matched healthy controls, all of whom exhibited clinically normal audiometric thresholds. Electroacoustic measures, cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEP), were used to assess neural activity. Contralateral noise stimulation was employed to evaluate contralateral suppression (CS) of CAEP amplitude. RESULTS: Significant differences in CS of N

Pitfalls in Trigeminal Nerve Mapping in Neurosurgery: The Mystery of the Unexpected Motor Responses.

OBJECTIVE: Intraoperative neurophysiological mapping can help identify the trigeminal nerve (TN) during surgeries where it is at risk. Low-stimulating currents may only recruit sensory branch stimulation and trigger reflex responses, potentially complicating interpretation during monitoring. This report aims to address this issue by examining cases to categorize TN responses in relation to varying stimulation intensities, identify stimulation patterns, and clarify common response characteristics in surgical contexts. METHODS: Seven cerebellopontine (CP) angle surgery cases with TN exposure we

Lysergic acid diethylamide-derived excitatory/inhibitory ratio change enhances global synchrony in functional brain dynamics.

Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) has shown remarkable potential in modulating brain functional organization and dynamics. However, the exact mechanisms underlying its effects remain unclear. In this study, we employed a data-driven approach to analyze recurrent functional connectivity patterns in resting-state fMRI data and developed a parameterized feedback inhibition model to characterize excitatory/inhibitory (E/I) balance. The findings demonstrate that LSD enhances global brain synchrony and dynamic complexity. This enhanced synchrony likely stems from LSD's preferential stabilization of a
