Enhancing explainable SARS-CoV-2 vaccine development leveraging bee colony optimised Bi-LSTM, Bi-GRU models and bioinformatic analysis.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a single-stranded RNA virus that caused the outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The COVID-19 outbreak has led to millions of deaths and economic losses globally. Vaccination is the most practical solution, but finding epitopes (antigenic peptide regions) in the SARS-CoV-2 proteome is challenging, costly, and time-consuming. Here, we proposed a deep learning method based on standalone Recurrent Neural networks to predict epitopes from SARS-CoV-2 proteins easily. We optimised the standalone Bidirectional Long Sh…

Transcriptomic decoding of dynamic brain activity alterations in chronic non-specific low back pain.

BACKGROUND: Investigating dynamic brain fluctuations helps reveal changes in neural activity patterns associated with disease. Chronic non-specific low back pain (CNLBP) is characterized by altered brain function, yet less is known about the dynamic changes in brain activity and their relationship with regional gene expression profiles. METHODS: Based on resting-state functional MRI data, a hidden Markov model (HMM) was applied to identify recurrent whole-brain activity patterns, referred to as HMM states, in 80 patients with CNLBP and 80 healthy controls (HCs). Additionally, partial least sq

Connectome analysis of a cerebellum-like circuit for sensory prediction.

Many forms of learning, for example, learning a model of the environment or a motor skill, rely on synaptic plasticity that is widely distributed across cell types and network stages. Understanding how this distributed plasticity functions is a central challenge in neuroscience1-5. Here we use connectomics to map the cell types and synaptic connections underlying a form of multi-layer continual learning that cancels predictable sensory responses in a cerebellum-like structure in electric fish6,7. Our analysis shows inhibitory and disinhibitory sensory input pathways that fulfil theoretical req

Do we really need a segmentation step in heart sound classification algorithms?

Cardiac auscultation is the key screening procedure to detect and identify cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). One of many steps to automatically detect CVDs using auscultation, concerns the detection and delimitation of the heart sound boundaries, a process known as segmentation. Whether to include or not a segmentation step in the signal classification pipeline is nowadays a topic of discussion. Up to our knowledge, the outcome of a segmentation algorithm has been used almost exclusively to align the different signal segments according to the heartbeat. In this paper, the need for a heartbeat al

SleepContextNet: A temporal context network for automatic sleep staging based single-channel EEG.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Single-channel EEG is the most popular choice of sensing modality in sleep staging studies, because it widely conforms to the sleep staging guidelines. The current deep learning method using single-channel EEG signals for sleep staging mainly extracts the features of its surrounding epochs to obtain the short-term temporal context information of EEG epochs, and ignore the influence of the long-term temporal context information on sleep staging. However, the long-term context information includes sleep stage transition rules in a sleep cycle, which can further improve

Predicting Clostridioides difficile infection outcomes with explainable machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Clostridioides difficile infection results in life-threatening short-term outcomes and the potential for subsequent recurrent infection. Predicting these outcomes at diagnosis, when important clinical decisions need to be made, has proven to be a difficult task. METHODS: 52 clinical features from existing models or the literature were collected retrospectively within ±48 h of diagnosis among 1660 inpatient infections. A modified desirability of outcome ranking (DOOR) was designed to encompass clinically-important severe events attributable to the acute infection (intensive care tr

A Deep Learning Framework for Anesthesia Depth Prediction from Drug Infusion History.

In the target-controlled infusion (TCI) of propofol and remifentanil intravenous anesthesia, accurate prediction of the depth of anesthesia (DOA) is very challenging. Patients with different physiological characteristics have inconsistent pharmacodynamic responses during different stages of anesthesia. For example, in TCI, older adults transition smoothly from the induction period to the maintenance period, while younger adults are more prone to anesthetic awareness, resulting in different DOA data distributions among patients. To address these problems, a deep learning framework that incorpor

On-Device Deep Personalization for Robust Activity Data Collection.

One of the biggest challenges of activity data collection is the need to rely on users and keep them engaged to continually provide labels. Recent breakthroughs in mobile platforms have proven effective in bringing deep neural networks powered intelligence into mobile devices. This study proposes a novel on-device personalization for data labeling for an activity recognition system using mobile sensing. The key idea behind this system is that estimated activities personalized for a specific individual user can be used as feedback to motivate user contribution and improve data labeling quality.

Neural substrates of apathy in Parkinson's disease: A systematic review of structural and functional neuroimaging studies.

BACKGROUND: Apathy is a frequent and disabling non-motor symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD), characterized by diminished motivation, reduced goal-directed behavior, and emotional indifference. Growing evidence suggests that apathy in PD represents a distinct neuropsychiatric syndrome that may coexist with depression and global cognitive impairment, while also showing partially dissociable clinical and neural correlates. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to investigate the neural substrates of apathy in PD by synthesizing evidence from structural and functional neuroimaging studies. ME

A spiking continuous attractor network for event-driven neuromorphic robot guidance.

Event cameras provide fast, sparse visual measurements, but their output alone does not supply the persistent state required for closed-loop tracking. This study presents a hybrid event-driven perception-to-action system in which a Prophesee GenX320 (Prophesee SA, Paris, France) event camera and a lightweight Raspberry Pi 5 (Raspberry Pi Ltd., Cambridge, UK) front end provide target evidence to a spiking continuous attractor network running on a single SpiNNaker 2 (SpiNNcloud Systems GmbH, Dresden, Germany) chip. Recurrent difference-of-Gaussians connectivity forms a localised activity bump wh

Development of a Novel Non-Invasive Blood Pressure Measurement Technique Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy and Deep Neural Networks.

Non-invasive monitoring of blood pressure is essential for health management in daily life, particularly for elderly individuals and patients with autonomic dysfunction. However, conventional cuff-based sphygmomanometers are uncomfortable and provide discontinuous monitoring. In this study, we propose a novel non-invasive technique for blood pressure change assessment based on prefrontal near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and deep neural networks. Unlike existing approaches that rely primarily on electrocardiography or photoplethysmography signals, the proposed method independently utilizes pre

Multi-Dimensional Wi-Fi Received Signal Strength Indicator Data Augmentation Based on Multi-Output Gaussian Process for Large-Scale Indoor Localization.

Location fingerprinting using Received Signal Strength Indicators (RSSIs) has become a popular technique for indoor localization due to its use of existing Wi-Fi infrastructure and Wi-Fi-enabled devices. Artificial intelligence/machine learning techniques such as Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have been adopted to make location fingerprinting more accurate and reliable for large-scale indoor localization applications. However, the success of DNNs for indoor localization depends on the availability of a large amount of pre-processed and labeled data for training, the collection of which could be t

Cognitive control neuroimaging measures differentiate between those with and without future recurrence of depression.

BACKGROUND: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a prevalent, disruptive illness. A majority of those with MDD are at high risk for recurrence and increased risk for morbidity and mortality. This study examined whether multimodal baseline (and retest) Cognitive Control performance and neuroimaging markers (task activation and neural connectivity between key brain nodes) could differentiate between those with and without future recurrence of a major depressive (MD) episode within one year. We hypothesized that performance and neuroimaging measures of Cognitive Control would identify markers that

RIFT: A Fractal-Holographic Theory of Consciousness and Autopoietic Control.

Background/Objectives: Consciousness remains poorly understood as a causative force. Existing theories describe neural correlates or information processing but do not explain how a unified inner experiential space is physically generated or acts back upon its substrate. Recurrent Integration Fractal Theory (RIFT) proposes a three-step mechanism that reconstructs the spatial relationships of the outer world (exospace) within the experiential space of the Self (endospace) and enables autopoietic feedback. Methods: RIFT was examined through six computational modules representing successive transf

Functional connectivity alterations in traumatic brain injury patients with late seizures.

PTE is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent and spontaneous epileptic seizures. PTE is a major public health problem occurring in 2-50% of TBI patients. Identifying PTE biomarkers is crucial for the development of effective treatments. Functional neuroimaging studies in patients with epilepsy and in epileptic rodents have observed that abnormal functional brain activity plays a role in the development of epilepsy. Network representations of complex systems ease quantitative analysis of heterogeneous interactions within a unified mathematical framework. In this work, graph theory
