Drought and armed conflict as drivers of overcrowding in Sudan's refugee camps.

Forced migration is a result of variable changes, including human-made factors, environmental factors or both. Climate change has been a significant cause of increased forced migration in Sudan. The prolonged drought attributed to climate change affects Sudanese citizens, with 80% of the population relying on agriculture and pastoralism as their main source of income. Since April 2023, the conflict has displaced over 14.5 million people. Four million have sought safety in neighbouring countries. The refugee camps lack essential resources, and the displaced people face a health crisis, with out

The Oral Health Disparity Among Refugee Children: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to understand oral health problems among refugee children resettled in developed nations and determine best practices for addressing them. A comprehensive search was performed using the PubMed, CINAHL, and Scopus databases from 1980 through 2024 using Medical Subject Heading terms: "children," "refugee," and "oral health," and a separate search in which "oral health" was replaced with "dental caries." Transcultural adaptation of the Refugee Health Screener - 15 to Brazilian Portuguese.

The forced migration process exposes the individual to different situations of vulnerability before, during and after arrival in the country of destination. In this context, the prevalence of anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder is double when compared to the non-refugee population. Brazil receives approximately 30,000 refugee requests annually, but it lacks mental health screening instruments adapted for this public. Thus, the objective of this research was to perform the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Refugee Health Screener - 15 (RHS-15) instrument from S

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the food rations of refugees in Rwanda.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has significantly impacted the global economy, by forcing people to stay indoors and creating a 'new normal' of living. Rwanda has made notable efforts to fight the pandemic. However, the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the country's economy are numerous and the refugees residing in Rwanda are not spared these effects. As of December 2020, 164,000 people were granted refugee status in Rwanda according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The majority were from neighbouring countries in the Great Lakes regions, including DRC (Democ…

Health of African Refugee Children Outside Africa: A Scoping Review.

PROBLEM: Africa is the largest source continent of refugee children. However, we found no published synthesis of the literature on the health of African refugee children outside Africa. Conducting a review of the literature on this particular population will help illuminate the particular contextual health issues faced by African child refugees who live outside Africa. The purpose of this review is to synthesize what is known from the existing literature regarding the health of sub-Saharan African refugee children who live outside Africa. METHODS: We completed a scoping review of the publishe…

The Epidemiology of Stunted Growth in Refugee Patients with Chronic Burn Injuries.

The aim of this study is to identify the prevalence of stunted growth in Syrian refugee children with chronic burn injuries and to compare it to other children (±burn) of similar socioeconomic status. This is a retrospective medical chart review conducted on 142 Syrian refugee children (≤18 years of age) who have sustained war-related and nonwar-related chronic burn injuries between 2014 and 2020. Stunted growth was measured using the height-for-age z score. The majority of burn injuries were among children below 5 years of age. The prevalence of stunting was 9.2% in our sample, with an overal

[Violence against migrant and refugee women: how to identify them].

Today, people all over the world are on the move. Women and girls account for nearly half of the 244 million migrants. They are sometimes forced to leave their country of origin to flee physical, psychological or sexual violence and gender discrimination. Then the migratory route and the new life in the country of asylum expose them to situations of vulnerability and they are therefore at risk of physical, psychological or sexual abuse. The risk of HIV infection is high. Practitioners in host countries receive these women for various reasons in consultation. Knowing their background allows us

Is there echinococcosis in West Africa? A refugee from Niger with a liver cyst.

BACKGROUND: Italy is presently facing an increase in immigration from sub-Saharan Africa through the Mediterranean Sea. Case reports of human cystic echinococcosis (CE) have been reported from most sub-Saharan countries. Therefore, an increase in the number of patients with CE coming from these areas in the Italian and European centers for infectious diseases is expected. Unfortunately, the epidemiology of CE in sub-Saharan countries is poorly known, which makes clinical suspicion and diagnosis of such infection difficult in patients coming from these areas. RESULTS: Here we report a case of

Belonging and 'Unbelonging': Jewish refugee and survivor women in 1950s Britain.

This article analyses the life stories of female Jewish refugees and survivors in 1950s Britain in order to explore their relationship with the existing Jewish community and wider society. The paper is based on an analysis of twenty-one oral history testimonies from the Jewish survivors of the Holocaust collection held at the British library. Around 50,000 Jewish refugees from Central Europe came to Britain in the 1930s after fleeing from Hitler. In addition, a relatively small number of camp survivors and former hidden children settled in the country after the war; the Board of Deputies of Br…

[Splenomegaly in an Eritrean refugee: the hyper-reactive malaria splenomegaly syndrome.].

BACKGROUND: Hyper-reactive malaria splenomegaly (HMS) is a rare and potentially severe complication of malaria. It is likely that the incidence of patients with HMS will rise in the Netherlands due to the recent increase in asylum-seekers from Sub-Saharan Africa. It can be difficult to diagnose this disease, as this case shows. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 31-year-old male from Eritrea was admitted with fever and dyspnea, caused by an influenza A-infection. The patient also presented with cachexia, pronounced hepatosplenomegaly and pancytopenia. Microscopic diagnostic analysis for malaria was negative
