Pulpal reaction and microorganisms under Clearfil Composite Resin in deep cavities with acid etched dentin.

Experimental buccal cavities were prepared on 31 pairs of contralateral human premolars. Both cavities were acid etched with 40% phosphoric acid for 15 seconds. The layer of etched enamel was removed from one of the cavities (test) in order to create conditions for microbial invasion to the presumed gap between the resin and dentin. Both cavities were filled with Clearfil Composite Resin after the application of Clearfil Bonding Agent. In the control cavity, the outer portion of the filling was removed and replaced with IRM cement in order to prevent microbial invasion. The teeth were extracte

Effect of acid etching on the dental pulp in adhesive composite restorations.

Pulpal response to marginal enamel etching or both enamel and dentine etching with 37% phosphoric acid for adhesive composite restorations was studied in the teeth of the Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscata). Dentine etching irritated the pulp and caused moderate to severe initial changes along the odontoblastic layer at 3 days. When no bacteria were present along the cavity walls, the subsequent pulpal reactions at 30 and 90 days decreased with time and large amounts of irritation dentine were formed. These inflammatory reactions were less than those caused by enamel etching only, or zinc oxide/e

Root resorption associated with hydroxyapatite particles: a case report.

A case report of an unusual root resorption reaction associated with a graft of hydroxyapatite particles is presented. The hydroxyapatite particles were grafted to treat vertical infrabony defects at the distal aspect of the maxillary left canine and on the mesial side of the mandibular right first molar. The graft sites were monitored at maintenance visits. Root resorption was observed radiographically 9 to 10 months after grafting. The lesions were restored with a light-cured glass-ionomer cement and/or a resin composite. Possible etiologic factors associated with this condition are discusse

Scattering and phase-contrast X-ray methods reveal damage to glass fibers in endodontic posts following dental bur trimming.

OBJECTIVES: There is concern that the integrity of fiberglass dental posts may be affected by chairside trimming during treatment. We hypothesize that hard X-ray methods of phase contrast-enhanced micro-CT (PCE-CT) and synchrotron based X-ray refraction (SXRR) can reliably identify and help characterize the extent of damage. METHODS: Fiberglass posts were imaged both as manufactured and following trimming with a diamond bur. Each of the posts was imaged by SXRR and by PCE-CT. Datasets from PCE-CT were used to visualize and quantify 2D and 3D morphological characteristics of intact and of dama

In silico evaluation of stress distribution after vertebral body augmentation with conventional acrylics, composites and glass polyalkenoate cements.

There exists clinical evidence of fractures in adjacent vertebrae subsequent to vertebral augmentation procedures, such as vertebroplasty (VP) and kyphoplasty (KP). A potential contributory factor to such fractures may be the excessive mismatch of mechanical properties between contemporary bone cements (i.e. polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and bisphenol-a-glycidyl dimethacrylate (BIS-GMA)) and bone. Aluminum-free glass polyalkenoate cements (GPCs) present an interesting alternative to conventional bone cements. GPCs adhere to the philosophy that implant materials should have mechanical characte

[Composite filling materials in animal experiments].

The pulp tolerance of the composites "Estic" (Kulzer) and "Compocap" (Vivadent) and the polyacrylatecement "Bondal" (Vivadent) was tested in a total of 97 cervical cavities in rhesus monkeys. "Bondal" was well tolerated by the pulp. Both composites when used without cement base provoked slight to moderate reactions. This could be avoided by using "Bondal" cement bases.

Delayed miniature pulpotomy in a symptomatic mature molar.

This case report describes miniature pulpotomy (MP) with calcium-enriched mixture (CEM) cement, 1 week after carious pulpal exposure of a symptomatic mature molar. A 24-year-old woman was referred with complaining of severe lingering pain on the second upper left molar; a dental history revealed that the tooth had been prepared 1 week ago, but on pulp exposure, her dentist just dressed the cavity. After anesthesia/isolation in the same session, the temporary restoration was removed, the previously pulpal exposure was observed, and MP was carried out. Hemorrhage was effectively controlled using

Assessment of bond strength and bioactivity on a prototype resin-based luting agent containing a novel bioactive monomer.

A prototype luting agent based on a resin composite containing a novel bioactive monomer (a calcium salt of 4-methacryloyloxyethyl trimellitate; CMET) was developed, and its shear bond strength to tooth materials (dentin and enamel) and bioactivity was compared with those of commercially available resin-based luting systems. Extracted bovine incisors were embedded in a mold with a potting material. The labial bonding surface of the embedded tooth was wet-ground using #400 silicon carbide abrasive paper until sufficient superficial enamel or dentin was exposed. The bonding and luting agents ass
