A survey of the literature on problems of postoperative Duchenne-Erb paralyses caused by particular forms of arm positioning is followed by a report on observations made by the authors on a total of eleven patients. The paralyses observed were above all those of muscles of the Duchenne-Erb group. In four cases there were observed musculocutaneous paralyses. The tendency for reinnervation was good to excellent. Responsible for the development of paralysis was, in eight cases, the unphysiologic positioning of the arm during anesthesia and, as an additional straining moment, either the pressing d

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in speech skills of children who have hemiparesis and speech impairment after participation in a constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) program. While case studies have reported collateral speech gains following CIMT, the effect of CIMT on speech production has not previously been directly investigated to the knowledge of these investigators.
METHODS: Eighteen children with hemiparesis and co-occurring speech impairment participated in a 21-day clinical CIMT program. The Goldman-Fristoe Test of Articulation-2 (GFTA-2) was used

UNLABELLED: We evaluated the effects of a response-effort intervention on the occurrence of self-injurious hand mouthing and a competing response (object manipulation) with 4 individuals who had profound developmental disabilities. During Phase 1, results of functional analyses showed that all participants engaged in high levels of hand mouthing in the absence of social contingencies, suggesting that the behavior was maintained by automatic reinforcement. In Phase 2, preferred leisure items were identified for participants during assessments in which duration of leisure item manipulation was u

Infectious or inflammatory stress in the rat causes very typical functional and metabolic alterations. Among the most typical are elevation in body temperature, insulin, and glucagon and depression in the concentrations of plasma ketones and free fatty acids. These changes occur only with infectious or inflammatory stress and not with noninflammatory stresses such as femoral fracture, screen restraint, or exercise. It appears that the depression in plasma ketone bodies during infection or inflammation is closely related to the rise in plasma insulin. During infection imposed on experimentally

It has been declared that dopamine receptors within the hippocampal formation are involved in emotion, memory, and pain processing. Remarkably, both CA1 and dentate gyrus (DG) areas of the hippocampal formation are involved in persistent peripheral nociceptive perception. A prior study showed that dopamine receptors within the hippocampal DG have a critical role in antinociception induced by forced swim stress (FSS), as a physical stressor, in the presence of formalin irritation. The present experiments were designed to assess whether dopaminergic receptors within the CA1 have any role in anti

OBJECTIVE: Although advanced restraint systems, such as seat belt pretensioners and load limiters, can provide improved occupant protection in crashes, such technologies are currently not utilized in military vehicles. The design and use of military vehicles presents unique challenges to occupant safety-including differences in compartment geometry and occupant clothing and gear-that make direct application of optimal civilian restraint systems to military vehicles inappropriate. For military vehicle environments, finite element (FE) modeling can be used to assess various configurations of res

The purpose of this study was to report and compare the prevalence of disordered eating behaviours (DEBs) among Norwegian female athletes of different competition levels and sport types, and non-athletes of different physical activity levels. A total of 565 females (athletes: n = 189; non-athletes: n = 376) completed the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire 6.0 (EDE-Q). Athletes were categorised as recreational (n = 72), national (n = 94), or elite (n = 23), while non-athlete females were sedentary (n = 111) or physically active but non-competitive (exercisers: n = 265). A global EDE-Q sc

Chronic stress and anxiety highlight the need for safer natural alternatives to conventional therapies with severe adverse effects, yet the combined behavioral and biochemical effects of vitexin and its structural isomer, isovitexin, remain insufficiently investigated. This study evaluated the effects of a vitexin-isovitexin mixture in both crude and microencapsulated forms under acute and repeated restraint stress. In vitro radical-scavenging activity was assessed via the DPPH assay. In vivo, male Swiss albino mice subjected to acute (4 h) and repeated (4 h × 7 days) restraint stress received

Acute stress can enhance or impair synaptic plasticity depending on the nature, duration, and type of stress exposure as well as the brain region examined. The absence of a gut microbiome can also alter hippocampal plasticity. However, the possible interplay between synaptic plasticity, acute stress, and the gut microbiota remains unknown. Here, we examine this interaction and determine whether the gut microbiota impacts stress-induced alterations in hippocampal plasticity. Further, we explored whether exposure to the microbial metabolite butyrate is sufficient to counteract stress-induced alt

The effects of intense stressors can last a long time and may lead to the development of psychiatric disorders, including posttraumatic stress disorder. The basolateral amygdala (BLA) plays a critical role in these diseases and is extremely sensitive to stress. Here, we explored in male and female mice the long-term (35 days) impact of a 24-h restraint stress on BLA circuitry. We used Thy1-YFP mice to discriminate 2 subpopulations of excitatory neurons, which participate in "Fear-On" (Thy1-) and "Fear-Off" (Thy1+) circuits. The stress decreased the density of parvalbumin (PV) + inhibitory neur

Restraint asphyxia has been proposed as a mechanism for some arrest-related deaths that occur during or shortly after a suspect is taken into custody. Our analysis of the literature found that prone positioning, weight applied to the back, recovery after simulated pursuit, and restraint position have led to restrictive, but non life-threatening respiratory changes when tested in subsets. However, the combined effects of all four parameters have not been tested together in a single study. We hypothesized that a complete protocol with high-sensitivity instrumentation could improve our understand

Thirty-two American beavers (Castor canadensis) were immobilized with a mixture of nalbuphine, medetomidine, and azaperone (NalMedA) for tail transmitter placement and health assessments prior to translocation. Inductions and reversals were very smooth, but regardless of the dose administered, which ranged from 0.02 to 0.06 mL/kg, many beavers reacted to mild stimuli such as being lifted out of the cage, drawing blood from the tail, expressing anal glands for sex determination, and turning on isoflurane to deepen anesthesia before placement of tail transmitters. On a scale from 1 to 5, a sedat

We draw upon two recent reports from the Chief Ombudsman that describe the prison management of people assessed at risk of self-harm or suicide, as cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. People were mechanically restrained on 'tie-down' beds by their legs, arms and chest or placed in waist restraints with their hands cuffed behind their backs over prolonged periods. These practices occurred at the direction of, or were approved by, health professionals. We highlight ethical issues for health professionals party to 'tie down' and examine the current guidance and regulatory framewo

This proposal aims to create an in vivo rat model of adhesive capsulitis for researching potential treatment options for this condition and other etiologies of comparable arthrofibrosis. The model includes extra-articular fixation of the shoulder in rats via scapular to humeral suturing, resulting in a secondary contracture without invading the intra-articular space and resulting in decreased rotational ROM and increased joint stiffness. We used 10 Sprague-Dawley rats for the purpose of this study. Baseline ROM measurements were taken before glenohumeral immobilization. The rats were subjected

BACKGROUND: fMRI requires that subjects not move during image acquisition. This has been achieved by instructing people not to move, or by anesthetizing experimental animal subjects to induce immobility. We have demonstrated that a surgically implanted headbolt onto the skull of a rabbit allows their brain to be imaged comfortably while the animal is awake. This article provides a detailed method for the preparation.
NEW METHOD: We took advantage of the rabbit's tolerance for restraint to image the brain while holding the head at the standard stereotaxic angle. Visual stimulation was produced

OBJECTIVES: Stress in known to alter hormonal systems. Pharmacological doses of tryptophan, the essential amino acid precursor of serotonin, increase circulating leptin and decrease ghrelin in normal healthy adults. Because systemically injected leptin inhibits stress-induced behavioral deficits and systemically injected serotonin modulates leptin release from the adipocytes, we used tryptophan as a pharmacological tool to modulate hormonal and behavioral responses in unstressed and stressed rats.
METHODS: Leptin, ghrelin, serotonin, tryptophan, and behavior were studied in unstressed and str

We investigated the effect of different breathing strategies on postural performance in the patients with joint mobility limitations. The amplitude and velocity of thecenter-of-pressure movements in the frontal.and sagittal planes were measured by the force platform in48 healthy volunteers. The stability of vertical posture was estimated during normal breathing, inspiratory and expiratory breath holding and hyperventilation with immobilization of the neck, trunk, hip and knee joints, and without immobilization. In general, the restriction of mobility caused a reduction in the postural stabilit

Deaths in an autoerotic setting are usually due to accidental asphyxia, in which the individual accidently hangs or strangles themselves while inducing hypoxia for the purpose of heightened arousal. Death occurs when the level of hypoxia causes the individual to lose consciousness and is thus unable to prevent the neck compression from becoming lethal. In some cases there is an "escape" mechanism incorporated into the set-up which may fail. In rare cases, death is not as an immediate result of the autoerotic activity and is as a result of natural causes, which may or may not be related to the
