Macular grid photocoagulation in persistent macular edema due to central retinal vein occlusion.

AIM: Macular edema is still the main cause of poor visual prognosis in central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). This study was designed to establish whether grid photocoagulation is effective in the management of this disorder. METHODS: The records of 16 patients who had undergone macular grid photocoagulation for persistent macular edema due to CRVO were reviewed retrospectively. Pre-treatment visual acuity ranged from 20/400 to 20/40, and laser treatment was done six months or more after the onset of the disease. RESULTS: Biomicroscopy and fluorescein angiography showed the improvement or di…

Progress in single-cell sequencing of retinal vein occlusion or ischemic hypoxic retinopathy.

Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and ischemic hypoxic retinopathy (IHR) are leading cause of irreversible vision loss worldwide, compelled by complex microvascular dysfunction, neuroinflammation, and tissue hypoxia. Despite advances in imaging and treatment, a comprehensive understanding of cellular and molecular heterogeneity underlying these pathologies remains limited. Recently, single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) has emerged as a transformative technology, enabling unprecedented resolution of cellular dynamics, transcriptomic landscapes, and intracellular communication within the retina. Si…

Zero retinal vein pulsation amplitude extrapolated model in non-invasive intracranial pressure estimation.

Intracranial pressure (ICP) includes the brain, optic nerve, and spinal cord pressures; it influences blood flow to those structures. Pathological elevation in ICP results in structural damage through various mechanisms, which adversely affects outcomes in traumatic brain injury and stroke. Currently, invasive procedures which tap directly into the cerebrospinal fluid are required to measure this pressure. Recent fluidic engineering modelling analogous to the ocular vascular flow suggests that retinal venous pulse amplitudes are predictably influenced by downstream pressures, suggesting that I

Force-based Safe Vein Cannulation in Robot-assisted Retinal Surgery: A Preliminary Study.

Retinal vein cannulation (RVC) is a potential treatment for retinal vein occlusion (RVO). Manual surgery has limitations in RVC due to extremely small vessels and instruments involved, as well as the presence of physiological hand tremor. Robot-assisted retinal surgery may be a better approach to smooth and accurate instrument manipulation during this procedure. Motion of the retina and cornea related to heartbeat may be associated with unexpected forces between the tool and eyeball. In this paper, we propose a force-based control strategy to automatically compensate for the movement of the re…

Sex-specific age threshold for increased risk of retinal vein occlusion in Koreans.

PURPOSE: Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is one of most common retinal vascular disorders. It can lead to visual impairment and subsequent socioeconomic loss among the working population. RVO peak incidence is known to occur in the fifth and sixth decades of life, and is more predominant in males. To date, there has been no consensus regarding the optimal screening age for individuals at high risk for RVO, or whether sex-dependent cut-offs may be appropriate. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to predict the sex-specific age threshold for increased risk of RVO in Koreans. METHODS: The anal…
