Retinal microglia: just bystander or target for therapy?

Resident microglial cells can be regarded as the immunological watchdogs of the brain and the retina. They are active sensors of their neuronal microenvironment and rapidly respond to various insults with a morphological and functional transformation into reactive phagocytes. There is strong evidence from animal models and in situ analyses of human tissue that microglial reactivity is a common hallmark of various retinal degenerative and inflammatory diseases. These include rare hereditary retinopathies such as retinitis pigmentosa and X-linked juvenile retinoschisis but also comprise more com…

Clinical characteristics of patients with epiretinal membrane-Foveoschisis.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the clinical and morphological characteristics of epiretinal membrane (ERM)-Foveoschisis. METHODS: Medical charts of 2088 patients diagnosed with idiopathic ERM were screened and eyes with ERM-Foveoschisis were included. All eyes underwent a complete ophthalmological examination including spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). OCT features and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were analysed. ERM-Foveoschisis was defined as open, closed, elevated or flat based on the OCT features. Ellipsoidal zone (EZ) abnormality, intraret

PATHOLOGY OF PERIMACULAR FOLDS DUE TO VITREORETINAL TRACTION IN ABUSIVE HEAD TRAUMA.

PURPOSE: To demonstrate vitreoretinal traction as a mechanism for perimacular folds in abusive head trauma. METHODS: We performed gross and histopathologic examination of eyes of children with suspected abusive head trauma and identified those with typical perimacular folds. Information was collected regarding the incident that led to the child's death and systemic manifestations noted at autopsy. Eyes were prepared in a fashion that allowed for demonstration of the vitreoretinal interface. RESULTS: Ten eyes of five patients (2-13 months) were examined. All patients had systemic manifestatio

Treatment of cystic macular lesions in hereditary retinal dystrophies.

Cystic macular lesions frequently contribute to impaired visual acuity in hereditary retinal dystrophies. Their pathogenesis varies and is not entirely understood. Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors have proven to be potentially efficacious, although not in all cases. We discuss the various factors and mechanisms implicated in the etiology of cystic macular lesions (anatomical abnormalities, impairment of the blood-retinal barrier, tangential vitreous traction, and mutations in retinoschin, etc.) and the various treatments that have been proposed.

Update on shaken baby syndrome: ophthalmology.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Shaken baby syndrome is a common problem with a high morbidity and mortality. Ophthalmologists help manage this condition and therefore must keep abreast of current advances. RECENT FINDINGS: Clinical updates include the discovery that retinal folds and traumatic retinoschisis can very rarely occur after crush head injury, but remain specific for shaken baby syndrome in other scenarios. Pathology updates include new studies on orbital histology and woodpecker anatomy that suggest the retinal and optic nerve hemorrhages in shaken baby syndrome are caused by shaking itself ra…

[Retinal detachment in children: differential diagnosis and current therapy].

The number of retinal detachments in children is very low in comparison to the number of retinal detachments in adults, only 3.2 - 6.6% occur in children. The main predisposing factors are trauma, associated conditions, myopia and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) i. e., stage 4 and 5 and late stage of ROP. Furthermore, retinal detachment in children can be idiopathic. These eyes are not associated with any identified ocular or systemic comorbidity. Associated conditions include hereditary vitreoretinal disorders (e. g., morbus Stickler, X-linked juvenile retinoschisis, Marfan syndrome, familiä…

Upregulated TRPM1 is associated with apoptosis in Rs1 knockout mice and in ARPE19 cells through increased intracellular calcium.

The pathological mechanism underlying retinal apoptosis in X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS), a disease caused by retinoschisin 1 (RS1) deficiency, remains incompletely understood. This study aimed to investigate the role of transient receptor potential melastatin 1 (TRPM1) in retinal tissues and cells. Retinal function and structure were assessed by electroretinography (ERG) and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Protein expression was evaluated by immunofluorescence staining and western blotting (WB). Retinal morphology was examined by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining. Apoptotic retinal cel…
