A middle-aged man with long-standing polyostotic fibrous dysplasia had severe progressive restrictive lung disease with hypoxemia and pulmonary hypertension with heart failure because of exuberant intrathoracic, extraosseous proliferation of dysplastic tissue. Subtotal resection of this benign tissue mass ameliorated the respiratory insufficiency and led to sustained improvement in exercise tolerance, increase in pulmonary reserve, and decrease in signs of heart failure and pulmonary hypertension.

Three aneurysmal bone cysts of the rib in infants are presented. These tumors were engrafted on vascular and cartilaginous hamartomas and thus showed the unusual feature of hyalin cartilage associated with aneurysmal bone cyst. The entity of vascular and cartilaginous rib hamartoma is discussed with emphasis on the importance of distinguishing this malformation from a benign or malignant neoplasm.

Three cases of severe costovertebral deformities together with embryologically related cardiac malformations (Fallots Tetralogy and Truncus arteriosus communis) are presented. Two patients died because of their thoracic deformities and limited respiratory function. Relationships to similar bizarre veretebral anomalies are discussed. The cause is probably a teratogenic agent, acting between the fifth to eight embryologic week.

PURPOSE: Rib cage deformity in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is an axial plane deformity with significant implications for pulmonary function and cosmetic appearance. However, this plane is historically cumbersome to measure on standard radiograph, severely limiting our ability to study the deformity. Clinicians commonly rely on the scoliometer or rib vertebra angle difference (RVAD), which suffer from limited reproducibility. The ribs and surrounding chest wall are uncommon sites of tuberculosis (TB). Tuberculosis of the rib bone is often delayed in diagnosis or is recurrent with medical treatment.
