Function curve of the membranes that regulate amniotic fluid volume in sheep.

Seven singleton 120-day fetal lambs were prepared with a shunt from the lung to the gastric end of the esophagus, a bladder catheter, and multiple amniotic fluid and vascular catheters. The urachus was ligated. Beginning 7 days later, amniotic fluid volumes were determined by drainage, followed by replacement with 1 liter of lactated Ringer (LR) solution. Urine flow into the amnion was measured continuously. In 14 of 27 experiments, amniotic fluid volumes were determined again 2 days after the inflow into the amnion had consisted of urine only and in 13 experiments after the inflow of urine ha

Subcutaneous instillation of donor sites in burn patients.

A simple technique of powered subcutaneous instillation of split-thickness skin graft donor sites in burn patients and other plastic surgical patients has been developed. The necessary equipment required, including a standard pneumatic tourniquet, arterial pressure bags and spinal needles, is available in any plastic surgery operating theatre. In over 300 cases in which it has been employed, no complications have been encountered.

Permeability studies in a hypovolemic traumatic shock model: comparison of Ringer's lactate and albumin as volume replacement fluids.

In order to shed light on the controversy surrounding the choice of resuscitative fluids in shock, we used a canine model which we feel to be a superior mimic of human traumatic shock, combining hemorrhage (to a mean arterial pressure of 50 mmHg), fracture of both femora, and soft tissue crush. After 90 min, animals were resuscitated by reinfusion of shed blood, supplemented by 5% albumin (n = 8) or lactated Ringer's solution (n = 8). Plasma colloid osmotic pressure (COP), transcapillary escape rate for albumin (TER), total lung water and extravascular lung water (EVLW) were measured. COP fell…

Fluid therapy in acute pancreatitis comparing balanced solutions and normal saline: A systematic review, meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis.

BACKGROUND: Isotonic crystalloids are recommended as the first choice for fluid therapy in acute pancreatitis (AP), with normal saline (NS) and lactate Ringer's (LR) used most often. Evidence based recommendations on the type of fluid are conflicting and generally come from small single-center randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We therefore conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the effect of balanced solutions (BS) versus NS on patient-centered clinical outcomes in AP. METHODS: From four databases searched up to October 2024, we included only RCTs of adult patients with

NMDA modulation of GABA transporter current in carp retinal horizontal cells.

In the present study, the modulatory effect of NMDA on GABA transporter current was investigated on enzymatically isolated horizontal cells of carp retina. After application of NMDA (0.1 mM) for 50 s, the GABA transporter current elicited by GABA (1 mM) was decreased to 78.07+/-3.10% (n=5) of the control level. When the extracellular Ca(2+) was removed from the Ringer's solution, the NMDA inhibitory effect on the GABA transporter current was eliminated. The suppression effect could be attenuated when the Ca(2+) release and Ca(2+) uptake of intracellular Ca(2+) store were blocked after the cell…

Naturally occurring tularemia in a dog.

A 4-year-old spayed female Irish Setter was examined because of acute onset of lethargy, anorexia, and weakness. The dog had eaten an adult rabbit 36 hours earlier. Tularemia was suspected because of the rabbit exposure; however, other common diseases characterized by fever, malaise, and lymphadenopathy of acute onset were also considered (ie, ehrlichiosis and Rocky Mountain spotted fever). The dog was treated with doxycycline (5 mg/kg [2.3 mg/lb], PO, q 24 h) for 14 days as well as supportive treatment with a balanced electrolyte solution (lactated Ringer's solution [200 mL, SC]). The diagnos…

The muscarinic effects of acetylcholine on the action potential of bullfrog sympathetic ganglion cells.

The direct effects of acetylcholine (ACh) on Na+- or Ca2+-dependent action potentials of curarized sympathetic ganglion cells in bullfrogs were investigated under a condition where membrane depolarization caused by the muscarinic action of ACh was nullified by means of a hyperpolarizing current. ACh decreased the after-hyperpolarization of Na+-action potentials in Ringer's solution, and increased the after-depolarization of Ca2+-action potentials in the isotonic Ca2+ solution. In both solutions, the maximum rates of rise of the spikes were decreased and the slope membrane resistance at the ori…

Normal saline versus lower-chloride solutions for kidney transplantation.

BACKGROUND: The ideal intravenous fluid for kidney transplantation has not been defined, despite the common use of normal saline during the peri-operative period. The high chloride content of normal saline is associated with an increased risk of hyperchloraemic metabolic acidosis, which may in turn increase the risk of hyperkalaemia and delayed graft function. Balanced electrolyte solutions have a lower chloride content which may decrease this risk and avoid the need for dialysis due to hyperkalaemia in the immediate post-transplant period. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) addressing this i

Monoclonal antibody delivery to intraperitoneal tumors in rats: effects of route of administration and intraperitoneal solution osmolality.

Monoclonal antibody (MAb) transport in peritoneal tissue is dominated by convection, which is dependent on the net driving force of i.p. hydrostatic and osmotic pressure. To test the hypothesis that the i.p. osmolality has significant effects on IgG delivery to the tumor during the acute period after injection, solid tumors (FEMX-II) were transplanted into the anterior abdominal wall of nude rats. The wall is subject to well-defined pressure forces from the solution in the cavity. MAb 96.5, which specifically binds to FEMX-II cells, was simultaneously injected i.v. Is there a difference in treatment effect of different intra-articular drugs for temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis? A systematic review of randomized controlled trials.

A systematic review based on the PRISMA guidelines was conducted to investigate and compare treatment with hyaluronic acid (HA), corticosteroids, and blood products in patients with temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA). The MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for articles published until September 25, 2019. Articles met the inclusion criteria if they reported patients with TMJOA, a comparison group, and a follow-up period of at least 6 months. The mean and standard deviation for TMJ pain and maximum mouth opening (MMO) were reported. Nine studies invo

Influence of intravascular albumin on the capillary leakage of fluid in humans.

BACKGROUND: The Starling equation gives intravascular albumin a unique role in controlling capillary filtration and urine flow. The present study evaluated the strength by which this role is executed, in addition to other factors that statistically influence the capillary leakage and urine flow rates. METHODS: The capillary filtration and the urine flow were estimated by volume kinetic analysis at 2992 time points during 158 intravenous infusion experiments in volunteers and surgical patients who received 25 mL/kg of Ringer solution or 3 mL/kg of 20% albumin. Stepwise multiple regression was

Impact of colloids or crystalloids in renal function assessed by NGAL and KIM-1 after hysterectomy: randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Hydroxyethyl starches are colloids used in fluid therapy that may reduce volume infusion compared with crystalloids, but they can affect renal function in critical care patients. This study aims to assess renal effects of starches using renal biomarkers in the perioperative setting. METHODS: This prospective, controlled, randomized study compared Hydroxyethyl starch 6% (HES) with Ringer's lactate (RL) in hysterectomy. Each episode of mean arterial pressure (MAP) below 60 mmHg guided the fluid replacement protocol. The RL group received 300 mL bolus of RL solution while the HES gro

Excretion of NaCl and KCl loads in mosquitoes. 2. Effects of the small molecule Kir channel modulator VU573 and its inactive analog VU342.

The effect of two small molecules VU342 and VU573 on renal functions in the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti was investigated in vitro and in vivo. In isolated Malpighian tubules, VU342 (10 μM) had no effect on the transepithelial secretion of Na(+), K(+), Cl(-), and water. In contrast, 10 μM VU573 first stimulated and then inhibited the transepithelial secretion of fluid when the tubules were bathed in Na(+)-rich or K(+)-rich Ringer solution. The early stimulation was blocked by bumetanide, suggesting the transient stimulation of Na-K-2Cl cotransport, and the late inhibition of fluid secre

Pulmonary microvascular changes following fluid resuscitation in an ovine model of endotoxemia.

Fluid resuscitation is complicated in hypotensive septic patients by their susceptibility to pulmonary edema. This problem was evaluated in the ovine model of endotoxemia with a chronic lung lymph fistula. Escherichia coli endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide, 1.5 micrograms/kg) was given intravenously over 30 minutes. Group M (n = 9) continued to receive baseline fluids (2 mL/kg/h), while group R (n = 6) received 7 mL/kg/h of Ringer's lactate. After an initial drop in cardiac index, animals in both groups developed a hyperdynamic state. The fall in mean arterial pressure seen in group M was absent f

Management of liver disease in dogs and cats.

Liver disease may cause a variety of clinical signs, including depression, anorexia, weakness, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, jaundice, ascites and CNS signs. Treatment is aimed at eliminating the cause, providing supportive care, and preventing secondary complications. Rest facilitates liver regeneration. Hypokalemia, respiratory alkalosis and hypoglycemia may complicate liver disease. Fluids should be given IV rather than SC to severely dehydrated animals. Preferred solutions include Ringer's and half-strength saline with 2.5% dextrose. Solutions containing lactate s
