Adverse Health Outcomes among Rural and Urban Breast Cancer Survivors: A Population-Based Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Limited population-based studies have focused on breast cancer survivors in rural populations. We sought to evaluate the risk of adverse health outcomes among rural and urban breast cancer survivors and to evaluate potential predictors for the highest risk outcomes. METHODS: A population-based cohort of rural and urban breast cancer survivors diagnosed between 1997 and 2017 was identified in the Utah Cancer Registry (UCR). Rural breast cancer survivors were matched on year (±1 year) and age at cancer diagnosis (±1 year) with up to 5 urban breast cancer survivors (2,359 rural breas

Examining Long-Term Mental Health in a Rural Community Post-Disaster: A Mixed Methods Approach.

Psychological stressors have been observed immediately following disasters, yet less is known about the long-term effects on the mental health of vulnerable communities. In 2005, Graniteville, S.C. was ravaged by a train derailment that leaked approximately 60 tons of chlorine gas and left several people dead in the small community. The purpose of this study was to examine the mental health of Graniteville-area residents in the nine years following the train disaster using a mixed methods approach. Using the photovoice method, participants reported compromised mental health with symptoms consi

Social networks, social participation, and health among youth living in extreme poverty in rural Malawi.

Extensive research documents that social network characteristics affect health, but knowledge of peer networks of youth in Malawi and sub-Saharan Africa is limited. We examine the networks and social participation of youth living in extreme poverty in rural Malawi, using in-depth interviews with 32 youth and caregivers. We describe youth's peer networks and assess how gender and the context of extreme poverty influence their networks and participation, and how their networks influence health. In-school youth had larger, more interactive, and more supportive networks than out-of-school youth, a

Expanding Zero Suicide: Qualitative Assessment of Community Mental Health Center Partnerships Supporting Rural Suicide Prevention.

Rural communities in the United States have elevated suicide death rates and lower access to mental health services than more urbanized areas. Zero Suicide is a framework that promotes evidence-based suicide care for individuals at risk for suicide and is increasingly being adopted in rural healthcare and mental health provider organizations, including Community Mental Health Centers (CMHCs). Population-focused suicide prevention is more likely to be effective when mental health and healthcare providers engage with social services and other provider organizations (e.g., schools, law enforcemen…
