Mysticism, motherhood, and pathological narcissism? A Kohutian analysis of Marie de l'Incarnation.

The following paper makes use of Kohutian self-psychology as a hermeneutic for interpreting Marie de l'Incarnation and her perplexing decision to abandon her young son Claude in favor of religious life. The author argues that filtered through the lens of Kohutian self-psychology, Marie de l'Incarnation emerges as a pathological narcissist and the decision to abandon Claude symptomatic of a narcissistic grandiosity.

Effects of alternated sport competition in perceived competence for adolescent males with mild to moderate mental retardation.

Since the beginning of the 1990s, two types of organized competitive sport (Segregated or Integrated) have been proposed for adolescents with mental retardation (AMR). These programmes often have as an objective the improvement of the individual's perceived competence. In France, a third competitive system, called Alternated sport meets (Segregated and Integrated) is actually used. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of this type of programme and type of sport (basketball versus running) on domains of perceived competence and general self-worth. The participants were 32 AMR (Me

Autonomy, coping, and self-care agency in healthy adolescents and in adolescents with spina bifida.

This study compared the behaviors of autonomy, coping, and self-care agency among 22 adolescents with spina bifida with those of healthy adolescents matched for age, gender, grade in school, and socioeconomic status. Responses on the Adjective Checklist (Autonomy scale), the Ways of Coping Check List (Problem-Focused Coping scale), and the Denyes Self-Care Agency Instrument were analyzed. Adolescents with spina bifida demonstrated significantly lower scores on autonomy when compared with healthy controls. The absence of differences in coping and self-care agency suggests that similar therapeut

Linguistic markers of depression and emergent self-stigma in online self-disclosures: A mixed-methods study on Chinese social media.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a global mental health crisis, exacerbated by stigma that hinders open expression, particularly in collectivistic cultures. While linguistic markers of depression (e.g., self-focus, negative emotions) have been identified in clinical, Western contexts, their replication in non-clinical, everyday online discourse and their intersections with self-stigma remain underexplored. METHODS: Using a mixed-methods design, we collected 627 depression disclosures and 729 control posts from the social media platform Xiaohongshu via automated web crawling. Posts were analyzed usin

The Role of Self-Esteem and Self-Efficacy in Responsible Gambling.

Responsible gambling (RG) refers to a set of protective strategies aiming at containing the negative consequences associated with gambling. To improve the effectiveness of RG, it is essential to understand factors influencing gamblers' adherence to RG. Past literatures on addictive behaviors have demonstrated that one's self-efficacy and self-esteem are associated with the adherence to protective behaviors of the specific addictive behaviors. The present study aims to test whether gamblers' self-esteem and RG self-efficacy can be applied to explain their adherence to protective gambling behavi

Delusion proneness in nonclinical individuals and cognitive insight: the contributions of rumination and reflection.

Although previous research demonstrates that clinical individuals with delusions score low on one of the facets of cognitive insight, self-reflection, and high on the other facet, self-certainty, analogous studies of delusion proneness in nonclinical individuals have found that delusion proneness in nonclinical individuals associates with higher levels of both self-certainty and self-reflection. The present study sought to reconcile these inconsistent results by examining the contributions of different facets of self-reflection, rumination and reflection, to delusion proneness. One hundred fif

Subjective sexual experience in college women.

A random sample of 100 undergraduate women were interviewed about their subjective sexual experience. Sexual sensations during masturbation, oral sex, intercourse, and intercourse with concurrent clitoral massage were summarized and differentiated. Sensations labeled "orgasm" by a majority of the subjects were identified, and the suggestion was made that experiences other than that outlined by Masters and Johnson may be considered orgasmic by women in a more general population. Some support was found for Singer and Singer's typology of orgasm at a subjective level. Most subjects who experience

Predictors of Gamblers Beliefs About Responsible Gambling Measures.

Responsible gambling (RG) measures are methods aimed at reducing and preventing negative consequences associated with gambling. Some RG measures are set by authorities or gambling operators while others are available as features for gamblers to use themselves (e.g. budget tools where personal monetary limits are set prior to gambling). The present study is based on a general gambler population and investigates how RG measures with some specific RG features are assessed by the gamblers. The data was collected in 2013 and 2015. The samples were drawn from the Norwegian Population Registry. In to

Was that really me? Relationships between memory and sense of self in people with maladaptive daydreaming.

OBJECTIVES: A cohesive sense of self depends on intact autobiographical memory, both of which are impaired in dissociative disorders. Maladaptive daydreaming (MD), a recently proposed dissociative condition, involves excessive immersion in fantastical inner worlds, often at the expense of real-life engagement, leading to distress and functional impairment. The present study aimed to examine whether maladaptive daydreamers' persistent focus on imagined events and an idealized self, alongside reduced attention to real experiences, may create confusion, impair memory, and ultimately disrupt self-

The trans-species core SELF: the emergence of active cultural and neuro-ecological agents through self-related processing within subcortical-cortical midline networks.

The nature of "the self" has been one of the central problems in philosophy and more recently in neuroscience. This raises various questions: (i) Can we attribute a self to animals? (ii) Do animals and humans share certain aspects of their core selves, yielding a trans-species concept of self? (iii) What are the neural processes that underlie a possible trans-species concept of self? (iv) What are the developmental aspects and do they result in various levels of self-representation? Drawing on recent literature from both human and animal research, we suggest a trans-species concept of self tha

Effects of different types of physical activities on self-esteem in typically developing children and adolescents: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Amid the escalating global mental health crisis among children and adolescents, low self-esteem has been recognized as a pivotal risk factor for the onset of psychological difficulties. Developing interventions that are both cost-effective and widely accessible to enhance self-esteem carries substantial public health significance. The present study aims to systematically evaluate the effects of various forms of physical activity on self-esteem in typically developing children and adolescents, and to establish a comparative ranking of their effectiveness. METHODS: Following the PRI

The core symptoms of elementary school students' fear of negative evaluation and its network relationship with self-confidence and family atmosphere.

As a potential threat to elementary students' psychological well-being, fear of negative evaluation (FNE) is common in academic life and may adversely affect cognitive, emotional, and behavioral development. In this study, network analysis was used to identify the core symptoms of FNE in 734 elementary school students and to examine the associations between FNE and self-confidence and family atmosphere. The results indicated that (1) the core FNE symptoms were: "I am afraid of not being recognized by others," "I am afraid that others will find fault with me," "When I talk to others, I worry ab

Mental Imagery of the Self in Body Dysmorphic Disorder: A Mixed-Methods Systematic Review.

Mental imagery has been identified as a key feature of the onset, maintenance and treatment of psychological disorders. Research on the role of mental imagery in body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), a condition hallmarked by negative sensory appraisals of the self, has been increasingly recognised in theoretical perspectives and psychological interventions. However, the scope and implications of this work have not yet been reviewed. This systematic review sought to identify the characteristics and proposed mechanisms of imagery in BDD, synthesising qualitative and quantitative data using Meta-Integ

Impostor syndrome in nurse education: identity and practice.

This commentary explores the growing prevalence of impostor syndrome among nurse lecturers in university settings. Even though impostor syndrome has an impact on personality, wellbeing, and productivity, it frequently goes unnoticed due to the professionalism and resilience associated with the role. Impostor syndrome, or the impostor phenomenon, is characterised by persistent self-doubt despite evident achievement and is particularly recognised among early-career academics adjusting to unfamiliar systems and expectations. The discussion critically analyses impostor syndrome as a contemporary i
