Unwanted effects, self-management strategies, and consequences of unwanted effects of methamphetamine use.

UNLABELLED: Background Acute methamphetamine toxicities are poorly characterized. We sought to describe unwanted physical and mental effects from methamphetamine use, consequences of unwanted effects (e.g., altercations), and self-management strategies. METHODS: We used data from two cross-sectional surveys conducted from 2023 to 2024 in San Francisco and Oakland, CA (N = 1385), of people over 18 years of age who used unregulated drugs. Among participants reporting past 90-day methamphetamine use (n = 955), we determined the proportion with past 90-day unwanted effects; consequences of the mo…

"God Will Ease My Pain": Pain Self-Management Experiences of African American Adults.

Black/African Americans' experiences with pain self-management are often perceived as suboptimal and stressful because of cultural incongruence and racism encountered in interactions with the healthcare system. Although the number of qualitative and quantitative studies exploring Black/African American pain management experiences is slowly increasing, there has not been a systematic synthesis on this topic. Hence, the overarching aim of this review of the literature was to use a qualitative meta-ethnographic approach to synthesize knowledge on pain self-management and pain experiences among Bl…

A programmable and self-adaptive ultrasonic wireless implant for personalized chronic pain management.

Chronic pain management typically involves opioids, which are associated with severe side effects such as addiction. Implantable percutaneous electrical stimulators are a promising alternative approach to pain management. However, they are expensive, can cause damage during surgery and often rely on a battery power supply that must be periodically replaced. Here we report an integrated flexible ultrasound-induced wireless implantable stimulator combined with a pain detection and management system for personalized chronic pain management. Power is supplied to the stimulator by a wearable ultras

Empowering Pharmacists in Heartburn Management: Practical Insights for OTC Treatment and Self-Care.

Heartburn is a prevalent and frequently self-managed condition, with a myriad of over-the-counter (OTC) treatment options available for self-care. The potential for misinterpretation of drug labels and improper OTC medication selection may result in inadequate treatment, potential drug interactions, as well as medication overuse, misuse, or delay in seeking treatment for a more serious health condition. As highly accessible healthcare professionals, pharmacists play a crucial role in validating self-diagnoses, in guiding appropriate OTC medication selection and use, and in educating patients o

Reported Triggers and Self-reported Management Strategies in Children With Familial Mediterranean Fever.

OBJECTIVES: Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is the most common monogenic autoinflammatory disorder. Data regarding the reported triggers of this rare disease are scarce. This study aimed to analyze the demographic data, clinical findings during the attacks, reported triggering, and self-reported management strategies of pediatric patients with FMF with exon 10 MEFV mutations. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with FMF according to the Eurofever/PRINTO classification criteria, with heterozygous, homozygous, and compound heterozygous mutations in exon 10 of the Mediterranean fever ( MEFV ) gene, a

Modifiable self-management practices impact nocturnal and morning glycaemia in type 1 diabetes.

AIMS: To identify risk factors for nocturnal/morning hypo- and hyperglycaemia in type 1 diabetes. METHODS: Data on self-management practices were obtained from 3-day records. We studied the associations between self-management practices on the first recording day and the self-reported blood glucose (BG) concentrations on the subsequent night/morning. RESULTS: Of the 1025 participants (39 % men, median age 45 years), 4.4 % reported nocturnal hypoglycaemia (<3.9 mmol/l), 9.8 % morning hypoglycaemia, 51.5 % morning euglycaemia, and 34.3 % morning hyperglycaemia (≥8.9 mmol/l). Feasibility Randomised Control Trial of OptiMal: A Self-Management Intervention for Cancer Survivors.

PURPOSE: Cancer survivors can experience symptoms such as fatigue, pain and distress that persist for many months following treatment. These enduring symptoms often impact on participation in self-care activities, returning to school and/or work, and leisure and social activities. Self-management support is increasingly recognised as a core aspect of cancer survivorship care to reduce the impact of persistent symptoms. The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility and potential effectiveness of a group-based self-management intervention, OptiMal, to improve the physical and psycholo…

Digital Self-Management Interventions for People With Osteoarthritis: Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) is not curable, but the symptoms can be managed through self-management programs (SMPs). Owing to the growing burden of OA on the health system and the need to ensure high-quality integrated services, delivering SMPs through digital technologies could be an economic and effective community-based approach. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of digital-based structured SMPs on patient outcomes in people with OA. METHODS: A total of 7 web-based and 3 gray literature databases were searched for randomized controlled trials assessing digital-ba…

Motivational Interviewing: Improving Confidence With Self-care Management in Postoperative Thoracolumbar Spine Patients.

Patients undergoing thoracic or lumbar spine surgery often lack confidence with self-care management of symptoms contributing to disability, such as pain, lack of sleep, depression, and immobility. The purpose of this pilot study was to examine whether a targeted motivational interview, focused on evidence-based recommendations to manage postoperative symptoms related to thoracolumbar spine surgery, would improve patient confidence with self-care management of their symptom-related disability. A quasiexperimental, 1-group, pretest-posttest design was used on a convenience sample of 15 adult su

Computer and mobile technology interventions for self-management in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterised by airflow obstruction due to an abnormal inflammatory response of the lungs to noxious particles or gases, for example, cigarette smoke. The pattern of care for people with moderate to very severe COPD often involves regular lengthy hospital admissions, which result in high healthcare costs and an undesirable effect on quality of life. Research over the past decade has focused on innovative methods for developing enabling and assistive technologies that facilitate patient self-management. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the ef…
