Savanna chimpanzee tool and fruit transfers facilitate the transmission of technological behaviours at Dindefelo, Senegal.

Social learning is a key factor in the transmission of technological behaviours amongst primates. We studied chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus) social interactions in the context of tool and proto-tool use behaviours in the savanna site of Dindefelo, Senegal. Between 2017 and 2025, we obtained 14 h 58 min of camera trap footage at 14 locations where chimpanzees performed tool-use behaviours, namely algae fishing (for filamentous green algae: Zygnemataceae), ant dipping (for army ants: Dorylus sp.), and termite fishing (for termites: Macrotermitinae). We also obtained 30 min of camera trap foot…

Molecular and serological evidence of hepatitis E virus genotype 3 circulation in pigs in Senegal.

OBJECTIVES: In Senegal, data on the epidemiology of hepatitis E virus (HEV) are limited, despite the emergence of a human epidemic in 2014. The objective of this study is to assess the prevalence, molecular characteristics, and seroprevalence of HEV in pigs in Senegal. METHOD: Blood samples were collected from pigs immediately after slaughter between September 2018 and December 2019. HEV RNA was detected using real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, and positive samples were subjected to Sanger sequencing targeting a fragment of approximately 300 bp of the ORF2 gene for mol…

MALDI-TOF MS identification of Glossina from Senegal and Guinea, and detection of associated Trypanosomes.

Tsetse flies (Glossina spp., Diptera: Glossinidae) are key vectors of African trypanosomes, causing human and animal African trypanosomiasis. Accurate species identification is crucial for surveillance and control, but morphological and molecular methods can be challenging. This study evaluated matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) for species-level identification of tsetse flies and assessed their infection status using molecular approaches. A total of 144 Glossina specimens were collected from Senegal and Guinea, morphologically assigned …

Low prevalence of scabies and impetigo in Dakar/Senegal: A cluster-randomised, cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Scabies, a parasitic infection caused by Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis, is a public health problem with significant morbidity worldwide, particularly in low-resource countries. Impetigo, a complication of scabies infection, is a risk factor for sepsis, glomerulonephritis and possibly acute rheumatic fever. Currently, the majority of epidemiological data has been collected in rural populations in the Pacific with limited applicability to urban populations in sub-Saharan Africa, where scabies is also believed to be a problem. To inform future public health programs, more reliable in

Prevalence and molecular characterization of hepatitis B virus infection in HIV-infected children in Senegal.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is the region with the most patients co-infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the hepatitis B virus (HBV) worldwide. However, few studies have focused on SSA children who are at a higher risk of developing a chronic infection than adults. Furthermore, children on first-line antiretroviral therapy (ART) including low genetic barrier drugs may develop both HBV and HIV resistance mutations. The aim of this work was to document HIV-HBV co-infection and to characterize the HBV isolates in children in Senegal. METHODS: This is a retro…

Statistical modeling of the abundance of vectors of West African Rift Valley fever in Barkédji, Senegal.

Rift Valley fever is an emerging mosquito-borne disease that represents a threat to human and animal health. The exophilic and exophagic behavior of the two main vector in West Africa (Aedes vexans and Culex poicilipes), adverse events post-vaccination, and lack of treatment, render ineffective the disease control. Therefore it is essential to develop an information system that facilitates decision-making and the implementation of adaptation strategies. In East Africa, RVF outbreaks are linked with abnormally high rainfall, and can be predicted up to 5 months in advance by modeling approaches
