OBJECTIVE: To directly compare two serotypes of botulinum toxin (BoNTA and BoNTB) in cervical dystonia (CD) using a randomized, double-blind, parallel-arm study design.
METHODS: Subjects with CD who had a previous response from BoNTA were randomly assigned to BoNTA or BoNTB and evaluated in a blinded fashion at baseline, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 2-week intervals thereafter until loss of 80% of clinical effect or completion of 20 weeks of observation. Cryptococcus neoformans comprises two varieties (neoformans and gattii) and four serotypes (A, B, C and D). A 26-month-old girl had a painful, swollen right knee, accompanied by fever and vomiting. She had had an upper respiratory tract infection for a number of days. Following a positive culture of synovial fluid, monoarthritis caused by Neisseria meningitidis serotype C without other signs of illness was diagnosed. She recovered completely after one joint aspiration and intravenous and oral antibiotic therapy. N. meningitidis serotype C infections without meningitis or septicaemia are rare, but should form part of the differential diagnosis of septic monoarthritis.

We present a fatal case of descending necrotizing mediastinitis secondary to group A Streptococcus (serotype M1T1). Group A Streptococcus is a well-described cause of necrotizing fasciitis, but there have only been 4 previous cases documenting its involvement in descending necrotizing mediastinitis. This is the first case report to describe involvement of the M1 serotype in this condition.

Two strains of bluetongue virus (BTV) serotype 11, UC-2 and UC-8, were identified by the electrophoretic migration pattern of their genomic RNA segments on polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Significant differences in virulence of these two viruses could be demonstrated by subcutaneous inoculation of newborn mice. No signs of disease were observed in mice infected with UC-2. Mice infected with UC-8 died of a severe necrotizing encephalitis, which resembled lesions in bovine and ovine foetuses infected with BTV.

Twenty four strains of Shigella were isolated from the stool of patients who had been admitted to the hospital with the complaint of diarrhea. Of these, 17 were found to be Sh. flexneri, and 7 Sh. boydii. Antibiotic susceptibility tests indicated that all of the 24 isolates probably had multiple resistance factors. Twenty three of 24 strains were found to be resistant to ampicillin. This may be important from a therapeutic point of view.

Three strains of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) (064:KSNT, K88ac; 020:KSNT, K88ac and 08:K85ab, K99) originally cultured from outbreaks of diarrhoea in piglets a few hours old, were administered orally to gnotobiotic piglets. There was a marked age-related difference in the clinical response to infection between the 3 strains although they all produced heat-stable toxin. Following a sudden drop in milk yield in a large dairy herd, leptospiral mastitis due to serotype hardjo was diagnosed serologically and by isolation of the organism from the milk and urine of affected cows. Two milkers subsequently became ill and developed titres to the Hebdomadis serogroup. During the same period the neighbouring herd experienced poor milking performance and a series of abortions and serological evidence suggested recent hardjo infection. The common source of infection appeared to be infected down calving heifers.

Leptospira interrogans serotype pomona antibody titres of 1:100 or greater were detected in 12.8% of 408 adult horses from seven of eight sampled herds in Saskatchewan. The geographical distribution of the seropositive horses was widespread throughout the agricultural area of the province. The geographical distribution and the cumulative increase in prevalence with age suggested that serotype pomona is enzootic in the equine population of Saskatchewan.
