Percutaneous distal soft tissue release-akin procedure, clinical and podobarometric assessment with the BioFoot in-shoe system: a preliminary report.

Hallux valgus (HV) is a common, complex, and progressive deformity of the first ray, leading to biomechanical changes. The purpose of this study is to describe the midterm outcomes of the percutaneous distal soft tissue release-Akin procedure for mild hallux valgus on plantar pressures distribution, clinical outcome, and radiographic parameters. Twenty-six patients (30 feet) who had undergone this procedure were evaluated prospectively. The BioFoot in-shoe system was used for an objective functional evaluation of dynamic plantar pressures in the heel, midfoot, first through fifth metatarsal he

Shoe allergens: retrospective analysis of cross-sectional data from the north american contact dermatitis group, 2001-2004.

BACKGROUND: Chemicals used in leather tanning, rubber processing, and/or adhesives are the most often-cited culprits in footwear dermatitis. Patch testing patients with suspected shoe dermatitis is essential for diagnosis and management. OBJECTIVES: The four goals for this study were to (1) determine the frequency of allergens associated with a shoe source in North American Contact Dermatitis Group (NACDG) patients with footwear allergic contact dermatitis; (2) compare these results to allergen frequencies from other published studies; (3) quantify the number of shoe-related reactions that we

"Do I buy my children shoes, or do I get a compression garment for my lymphoedema?" Australian stakeholder perspectives on cancer-related lymphoedema care.

PURPOSE: To identify the experiences and challenges some cancer survivors face in managing lymphoedema and to explore how they and healthcare professionals can best address them. METHODS: A qualitative participatory methodology was employed, involving two stakeholder consultation workshops (one face-to-face and one online). Sessions were audio-recorded, and thematically analysed. Workshops involved 55 participants, comprising people with lived experience of diverse cancers (n = 19) and multidisciplinary healthcare professionals (n = 36) in Australia. RESULTS: Participants identified three ke

"I sold my towel and shoes to pay the traditional healer": Care-seeking costs and productivity losses among snakebite victims in Eastern Province, Rwanda.

Snakebite envenomation (SBE) is endemic to sub-Saharan Africa and generally over-represented in rural, remote, and impoverished agricultural communities. While poverty is an established risk factor, little research has been done to investigate the economic consequences of SBE. This cross-sectional, quantitative study aimed to measure out-of-pocket spending and lost income when a household member was bitten by a snake. In 2020, 732 snakebite survivors from Eastern Province (Rwanda) agreed to complete a survey administered by telephone. The survey focused on participant demographics, income, dir

The influence of high-heeled shoes on strain and tension force of the anterior talofibular ligament and plantar fascia during balanced standing and walking.

High-heeled shoes have the capability to alter the strain and tension of ligamentous structures between the foot and ankle, which may result in ankle instability. However, high-heeled shoes can also reduce the strain on plantar fascia, which may be beneficial for the treatment of plantar fasciitis. In this study, the influence of heel height on strain and tension force applied to the anterior talofibular ligament (ATL) and plantar fascia were investigated. A three-dimensional finite element model of coupled foot-ankle-shoe complex was constructed. Four heel heights were studied in balanced sta…

Does in-shoe pressure analysis to assess and modify medical grade footwear improve patient adherence and understanding? A mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Medical grade footwear (MGF) with demonstrated plantar-pressure reducing effect is recommended to reduce the risk of diabetes-related foot ulceration (DFU). Efficacy of MGF relies on high adherence (≥ 80%). In-shoe pressure analysis (IPA) is used to assess and modify MGF, however, there is limited evidence for the impact on patient adherence and understanding of MGF. The primary aim of this study was to determine if self-reported adherence to MGF usage in patients with previous DFU improved following IPA compared to adherence measured prior. The secondary aim was to determine if pa

Mucinous Cystadenocarcinoma in a Horse Shoe Kidney Masquerading as Giant Hydronephrosis - A Case Report: Diagnostic Challenges, Lessons Learnt and Review of Literature.

Primary epithelial tumour of the renal pelvis is a rare entity. So far, very few cases are reported in literature. Of these, mucin secreting adenocarcinomas are distinctly rare. However, mucinous cystadenocarcinoma, that too arising in a horse shoe kidney is extremely rare to be reported. Mucinous cystadenomas and carcinomas arising from the renal pelvis are regarded to be secondary to a metaplastic change in the urothelium. Here, we present a case of a 51-year-old male, who complained of abdominal pain, palpable abdominal mass, haematuria along with passage of mucoid material in the urine, wi

Adapting Young Adults' In-Shoe Motion Sensor Gait Models for Knee Evaluation in Older Adults: A Study on Osteoarthritis and Healthy Knees.

The human knee joint is crucial for mobility, especially in older adults who are susceptible to conditions like osteoarthritis (OA). Traditionally, assessing knee health requires complex gait analysis in clinical settings, which limits opportunities for convenient and continuous monitoring. This study leverages advancements in wearable technology to explore the adaptation of models based on in-shoe motion sensors (IMS), initially trained on young adults, for evaluating knee function in older populations, both healthy and with OA. Data were collected from 44 older OA patients, presenting variou

Low-Profile, Shoe-Type Ankle-Foot Orthosis with Active Variable Ankle Stiffness via Wire-Fabric Compression Mechanism.

Acute ankle sprains frequently lead to chronic ankle instability and muscle atrophy by causing immobilization, which necessitates real-time stiffness modulation for ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs). This paper proposes Active Variable Compression Shoes (AVC-Shoes), an ankle support system inspired by the "heel-lock taping" technique, which employs a wire-fabric compression mechanism to selectively stiffen ankle joints at crucial points in the gait cycle. The experimental results confirmed that AVC-Shoes achieve variable ankle stiffness in all directions, demonstrating dorsiflexion and plantarflexion…

Running shoe cushioning properties at the rearfoot and forefoot and their relationship to injury: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial on leisure-time runners.

Previous work has demonstrated the protective effect of shoe cushioning on injury risk in leisure-time runners, but most models currently available on the market have greater cushioning than those investigated so far. Also, the optimal level of cushioning and the role of cushioning on the forepart of the shoe for injury prevention are still unknown. The main aim of this study is to determine whether (1) current 'extra soft' cushioning material at the rear part of the shoe reduces injury risk compared with stiffer material and (2) cushioning under the forepart of the shoe also contributes to in

In-shoe plantar pressure depends on walking speed and type of weight-bearing activity in people with diabetes at high risk of foot ulceration.

BACKGROUND: In evaluating therapeutic footwear, in-shoe plantar pressure is usually obtained during mid-gait steps at self-selected walking speed in a laboratory setting. However, this may not accurately represent plantar pressures or indicate the cumulative stress experienced in daily life. We investigated the effects of walking speed and different weight-bearing activities on in-shoe plantar pressure in people with diabetes at high risk of ulceration. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study including 30 participants we compared in-shoe plantar pressures between three standardized walking speeds
