Recent controversy over whether biodiversity reduces disease risk (dilution effect) has focused on the ecology of Lyme disease, a tick-borne … and chipmunks feed a large proportion of nymphs. White-footed mice, eastern chipmunks, short-tailed shrews, and masked shrews were important amplification hosts that greatly increased the density of infected nymphs. Gray squirrels and Virginia opossums were important dilution hosts. Removing these two species increased the maximum number of larvae attach …

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R)/glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide receptor (GIPR) agonistic analogs have yielded superior results in enhancing glycemic control and weight management compared to GLP-1R agonism alone. Intriguingly, GIPR agonism appears to induce antiemetic effects, potentially alleviating part of the nausea and vomiting side effects common to GLP-1R agonists like semaglutide. Here, we show in rats and shrews that GIPR agonism blocks emesis and attenuates other malaise behaviors elicited by GLP-1R activation while maintaining reduced food intake and body weight l…

Human babesiosis is an increasing health concern in the northeastern United States, where the causal agent, Babesia microti, is spread through the bite of infected Ixodes scapularis ticks. We sampled 10 mammal and 4 bird species within a vertebrate host community in southeastern New York to quantify reservoir competence (mean percentage of ticks infected by an individual host) using real-time PCR. We found reservoir competence levels >17% in white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus), raccoons (Procyon lotor), short-tailed shrews (Blarina brevicauda), and eastern chipmunks (Tamias striatus), and …

The cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis, is an inefficient vector of the plague bacterium (Yersinia pestis) and is the predominant off-host flea … . felis that had fed on humans and the proportion that had fed on potentially infectious rodents or shrews. Our findings indicate that cat fleas in human habitations in the West Nile region feed primarily on domesticated species. We conclude that C. felis is unlikely to serve as a Y. pestis bridging vector in this region.

Infestation of small mammals, including common shrews Sorex araneus L., field mice Apodemus agrarius Pallas, and red voles Clethrionomus rutilus Schreber, with immature Ixodes persulcatus ticks and their infection with tickborne encephalitis virus (TBEV) were studied in the forest-steppe habitat in the vicinity of Novosibirsk, Russia. Larval ticks parasitize all three host species, but virtually all nymphs were found only on field mice and red voles. Detection of the viral RNA using reverse transcription (RT) with subsequent nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) and of viral antigen using en…

Lassa fever (LASV; Mammarenavirus lassaense) is an endemic zoonosis in West Africa. Human infections arise from rodent-to-human transmission, primarily from the synanthropic reservoir Mastomys natalensis (M. natalensis). In Sierra Leone, small-mammal communities vary across land-use gradients, shaping LASV transmission risk. How anthropogenic environments facilitate the rodent-rodent interactions remains poorly understood. Small mammals were sampled over 43,266 trap nights in Sierra Leone's LASV-endemic Eastern Province, detecting 684 rodents and shrews. To assess potential transmission, space…

Recent schistosomiasis control efforts in sub-Saharan Africa have focused nearly exclusively on treatment of humans with praziquantel. However, the extent to which wild mammals act as reservoirs for Schistosoma mansoni and therefore as sources of renewed transmission following control efforts is poorly understood. With the objective to study the role of small mammals as reservoir hosts, 480 animals belonging to 9 rodent and 1 insectivore species were examined for infection with schistosomes in Kisumu, in the Lake Victoria Basin, Kenya. Animals were collected from 2 sites: near the lakeshore an

As part of a larger epidemiological study examining the transmission of Trichinella spiralis in an agricultural ecosystem, resident wild and feral animals were trapped to determine the extent of their involvement in the natural, on-farm cycling of the parasite among swine. During a 21-mo-study, seven of 15 skunks (Mephitis mephitis), one of three opossums (Didelphis virginiana), two of two feral domestic cats and a raccoon (Procyon lotor) were found to be infected, while five shrews (Blarina brevicauda) and 18 deer mice (Peromyscus spp.) were uninfected. Most of the former hosts probably becam…

Diseases caused by Rickettsiales bacteria are a global public health problem. To better understand the diversity and origins of Rickettsiales infection in humans and animals, we sampled 134 febrile patients, 173 rodents and 43 shrews, as well as 358 ticks, from two cities in Jiangsu and Jiangxi provinces, China. Our data revealed a relatively high prevalence of scrub typhus cases in both localities. In addition, both serological tests and genetic analysis identified three patients infected with Anaplasma bovis, Rickettsia monacensis, and Orientia tsutsugamushi bacteria. Molecular epidemiologic…

Hantaviruses are RNA viruses of the family Bunyaviridae. Their hosts are mammals of the orders rodents (voles, rats, mice), insectivores (shrews, moles), and chiroptera (bats). Hantaviruses are present in many areas of Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa. In the Czech Republic, the occurrence of five species of hantaviruses has been reported (Dobrava/Belgrade, Puumala, Tula, Seewis, and Asikkala), with the first three of them causing human diseases. Although the course of hantavirus infections can be very serious, there is a low awareness of these diseases, even among health professionals, …

Ecological and bacteriologic observations of small mammals captured in Dhaka, Bangladesh, indicated that Bartonella infections occurred in high prevalence among lesser bandicoot rats (Bandicota bengalensis), black rats (Rattus rattus), and house shrews (Suncus murinus). Sequence analysis of the citrate synthase gene of Bartonella isolates showed that small mammals in Bangladesh harbored a diverse assemblage of strains. Some cultures were genetically related to Bartonella elizabethae, a species identified from a human patient in the United States. Sequences of some other cultures from Bandicota…

Musserakis sulawesiensis gen. et sp. n. (Nematoda: Heterakidae) is described from the large-bodied shrew rat, Echiothrix centrosa, one of the old endemic rats of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Musserakis is readily distinguished from other heterakid genera by having non-recurrent and non-anastomosing cephalic cordons, by lacking papillae between papillae groups around precloacal sucker and cloacal aperture and by lacking teeth in the pharyngeal portion. The spicules are equal but with marked dimorphism among individuals. Heterakids collected from other old endemic murids examined, i.e., Crunomys celeben

BACKGROUND: Wild micromammals serve as key hosts for diverse zoonotic pathogens, maintaining these agents in natural ecosystems and facilitating potential spillover to humans. Assessing pathogen prevalence in micromammals is essential for evaluating zoonotic risk and informing public health interventions.
METHODS: In this study, we applied the TaqMan Array Card (TAC) platform, a high-throughput molecular diagnostic tool, to micromammal-borne zoonotic pathogen surveillance. From October to November 2022, a total of 160 wild micromammals, including Apodemus agrarius (Striped field mouse) (90.6,

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is caused by hantaviruses (HVs) and is endemic in Zhejiang Province, China. In this study, we aimed to explore the changing epidemiology of HFRS cases and the dynamics of hantavirus hosts in Zhejiang Province. Joinpoint regression was used to analyze long-term trends in the incidence of HFRS. The comparison of animal density at different stages was conducted using the Mann-Whitney Test. A comparison of HV carriage rates between stages and species was performed using the chi-square test. The incidence of HFRS shows a continuous downward trend. Cases

AIM: To clarify the innervation of the antro-pyloric region in humans from a clinico-anatomical perspective.
METHODS: The stomach, duodenum and surrounding structures were dissected in 10 cadavers, and immersed in a 10mg/L solution of alizarin red S in ethanol to stain the peripheral nerves. The distribution details were studied to confirm innervations in the above areas using a binocular microscope. Similarly, innervations in 10 Suncus murinus were examined using the method of whole-mount immunohistochemistry.
RESULTS: The innervation of the pyloric region in humans involved three routes: O
