Application of recombinant human erythropoietin in patients with polycystic kidney disease and chronic renal failure.

Recombinant erythropoietin was used in the treatment of the anemic syndrome in 5 patients (4 women and 1 man), aged 45-63, with confirmed autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. All patients were with II stage chronic renal insufficiency. The treatment was conducted with Eprex (Silag, Switzerland) administered subcutaneously in a dose of 50 U/kg of body weight for three months. Once weekly, hemoglobin, hematocrit, erythrocytes, and serum iron were investigated in all patients. Simultaneously, we used recombinant erythropoietin in the same dose and treatment protocol on a control group of

Relative contribution of ruminal buffering systems to pH regulation in feedlot cattle fed either low- or high-forage diets.

The relative contribution of ruminal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) absorption and salivary buffering to pH regulation could potentially change under different dietary conditions. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the effects of altering the ruminal supply of rapidly fermentable carbohydrate (CHO) on absorptive function and salivation in beef cattle. Eight heifers (mean BW±SD=410±14 kg) were randomly allocated to two treatments in a crossover design with 37-day periods. Dietary treatments were barley silage at 30% low forage (LF) or 70% high forage (HF) of dietary dry ma

The role of solid feed amount and composition and of milk replacer supply in veal calf welfare.

Diets used in veal production were linked with welfare problems: that is, behavioral and gastrointestinal health disorders. This study aimed to determine how indicators of calf welfare, that is, behavior and some characteristics of the feces reflecting gastrointestinal health status, are affected by (1) different amounts and compositions of solid feed (SF), (2) the addition of ad libitum long straw to a typical veal diet, and (3) milk replacer (MR) being fed via automated milk dispensers (AMD). Two-week-old Holstein-Friesian bull calves (n=270) were used in this study. In a 4×2 factorial desig

Effects of including NaOH-treated corn straw as a substitute for wheat hay in the ration of lactating cows on performance, digestibility, and rumen microbial profile.

This study measured the effects of including 5% NaOH-treated corn straw (T-CS) as a substitute for 15% wheat hay in the control total mixed ration (TMR) of lactating cows on performance, digestibility, and rumen microbial profile. Two groups of 21 cows each, similar in initial performance, were fed individually 1 of the 2 TMR examined. Voluntary dry matter intake of cows fed the control TMR was 4.3% higher than that of the T-CS cows, but in vivo dry matter and organic matter digestibilities of both groups were similar. Crude protein digestibility was higher in the control cows but digestibilit

CNCPS-Based Nutrient Fractionation, Ruminal Degradation Kinetics, and Intestinal Amino Acid Flow Estimates in Dairy Feedstuffs.

To improve feed evaluation for precision dairy nutrition, this study integrated chemical analysis, CNCPS fractionation, in situ ruminal disappearance, exploratory regression, and amino acid-flow calculations for 19 dairy feedstuffs. Conventional nutrients and CNCPS fractions were determined, and total CP and carbohydrate-fraction disappearance were measured in four ruminally cannulated Holstein cows. Protein-fraction Kd values were inferred by nonlinear fitting with measured CNCPS fractions held constant. In the three silages, non-protein nitrogen represented 93.82-96.80% of soluble CP. Energy

Blackleg: A deadly disease with a hidden cause.

Blackleg is an infectious disease that mainly affects cattle and rarely affects other ruminants. It is characterized by hemorrhagic blackleg myositis. Clostridium chauvoei is a highly pathogenic anaerobic, endospore-forming Gram- positive bacteria that causes blackleg disease. Blackleg disease was first reported in 1870, but the causative bacterium C. chauvoei was not described until 1887. Clostridium chauvoei is found in grassland, fresh water, silage, soil, and the excrement of healthy animals. Cattle intestines and pasture soil have both been found to contain C. chauvoei spores, suggesting

Supply of a histidine-rich bypass protein source improves productive performance and N efficiency independently of metabolizable Met and Lys.

The milk protein equation of the Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle 8th Revised Edition includes additive effects of the metabolizable (m-) supply of Met, Lys, Leu, Ile, and His. However, additive effects of those AA in dietary studies have not been reported. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between dietary level of mHis and of mMet, mLys, and mLeu as a group (MKL) on lactation performance, N efficiency, and metabolism, with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. The 4 diets consisted of low (L) or high (H) mHis (HIS; 2.2 vs 2.7% MP) and L or H levels of mMet (2.4 vs 2.8%

Alteration of rumen fermentation, milk fat synthesis, and nutrient utilization with mineral salts in dairy cows.

The ability of mineral salts to alter rumen fermentation, rumen fluid dilution rate, milk fat synthesis, and nutrient utilization was investigated in dairy cows fed a high-concentrate, milk-fat depressing diet. Four rumen-fistulated Holstein cows were in a 4 X 4 Latin square design. Treatments consisted of: 1) basal (25% corn silage: 75% concentrate on a dry matter basis), 2) basal + 2.0% sodium chloride, 3) basal + 2.0% sodium bicarbonate, and 4) basal + 2.4% limestone. Addition of limestone to the basal diet reduced dry matter intake but increased efficiency of dietary nutrient utilization f

The rumen microbiota and metabolism of dairy cows are affected by the dietary rate of inclusion of Yucca schidigera extract.

Natural plant compounds can be used to supplement livestock diets, improving feed efficiency, production, and health, while also reducing environmental impact. In the present study, a Yucca schidigera (Mohave Yucca) extract was added at four rates of inclusion (ROI) of 0, 5, 15, or 30 g/day to a ryegrass and maize silage-based diet and fed to dairy cows in a 4 × 4 Latin square experimental design. Each period was 28 days in duration, with sampling undertaken during the final week of each period. Solid phase digesta (SPD) and liquid phase digesta (LPD) samples were collected via a rumen cannula

Effects of dietary forage neutral detergent fiber and rumen degradable starch ratios on chewing activity, ruminal fermentation, ruminal microbes and nutrient digestibility of Hu sheep fed a pelleted total mixed ration.

Pelleted total mixed ration (P-TMR) feeding, which has become a common practice in providing nutrition for fattening sheep, requires careful consideration of the balance between forage neutral detergent fiber (FNDF) and rumen degradable starch (RDS) to maintain proper rumen functions. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of the dietary FNDF/RDS ratio (FRR) on chewing activity, ruminal fermentation, ruminal microbes, and nutrient digestibility in Hu sheep fed a P-TMR diet. This study utilized eight ruminally cannulated male Hu sheep, following a 4 × 4 Latin square design with 31 d

Effects of source and concentration of neutral detergent fiber from roughage in beef cattle diets: Comparison of methods to measure the effectiveness of fiber.

Methods have been developed to measure the effectiveness of many roughages, but few evaluations have been conducted with tropical feeds. The objectives of this research were to determine the effectiveness of roughage sources based on bioassay and laboratory methods and identify the biological attributes of the diets that correlate with these methods. Six ruminally cannulated Nellore steers (408 ± 12 kg of BW) were randomly assigned to a 6 × 6 Latin square design within six diets: negative control diet (NC) with aNDF as 10% from corn silage (CS); positive control diet (PC) with aNDF as 20% from

Potential roles of nitrate and live yeast culture in suppressing methane emission and influencing ruminal fermentation, digestibility, and milk production in lactating Jersey cows.

Concern over the carbon footprint of the dairy industry has led to various dietary approaches to mitigate enteric CH4 production. One approach is feeding the electron acceptor NO3-, thus outcompeting methanogens for aqueous H2. We hypothesized that a live yeast culture (LYC; Saccharomyces cerevisiae from Yea-Sacc 1026, Alltech Inc., Nicholasville, KY) would stimulate the complete reduction of NO3- to NH3 by selenomonads, thus decreasing the quantity of CH4 emissions per unit of energy-corrected milk production while decreasing blood methemoglobin concentration resulting from the absorbed inter

Effects of varying forage particle size and fermentable carbohydrates on feed sorting, ruminal fermentation, and milk and component yields of dairy cows.

Ration sorting is thought to affect ruminal fermentation in such a manner that milk yield milk and components are often decreased. However, the influence of ruminally degradable starch on ration sorting has not been studied. Therefore, the objective of this experiment was to evaluate the interactions between forage particle size (FPS) and ruminally fermentable carbohydrates (RFC) for dry matter intake (DMI), ration sorting, ruminal fermentation, chewing activity, and milk yield and components. In this study, 12 (8 ruminally cannulated) multiparous, lactating Holstein cows were fed a total mixe
