Differential role of negative and positive parenting styles on resting-state brain networks in middle-aged adolescents.

Parenting styles encompass negative and positive approaches, potentially affecting adolescents' brain reward and emotion regulation systems. However, the association between parenting style and brain networks remains unknown. This study investigates the link between parenting style and functional connectivity (FC) within the reward and emotion regulation brain networks, using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). A total of forty-two middle-aged adolescents (26 males; 16 females) with no neurological or psychiatric symptoms participated in this study. We assessed paren

Cochlear implantation for a child with cochlear nerve deficiency: parental perspectives explored through narrative.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to explore, from the parents' perspectives, decision-making regarding a cochlear implant (CI) for their child when a favourable outcome is less likely because of abnormal neurophysiology. DESIGN: The primary research method of this single case study was qualitative interviewing drawing on a narrative approach to elicit the parents' perspectives about their experiences over time. Each parent was interviewed separately, but thematic analyses were undertaken both within and across interviews in order to identify overlaps and differences. STUDY SAMPLE:

The single-breath nitrogen test does not detect functional impairment in children with passive exposure to tobacco smoke.

Respiratory symptoms and pulmonary function were compared in 46 nonsmoking children aged 10 to 16 years, whose parents were smokers, and an identical number of children (matched for sex, age and height) whose parents were nonsmokers. Passive exposure to parental tobacco smoke resulted in a higher prevalence of respiratory symptoms, more frequent upper airway infections and a significant decrease in forced expiratory flows; these effects were more marked in boys. The single-breath nitrogen washout test, a sensitive test of small airways obstruction in adults, did not detect any effect of involu

[Mutation and polymorphism in exon 4 of tuberous sclerosis complex gene].

OBJECTIVE: To study the characteristic of mutation and polymorphism in exon 4 of tuberous sclerosis complex gene(TSC1) in Chinese. METHODS: Twenty-five TSC patients and 23 parents from 21 families were enrolled. The mutation of exon 4 in these subjects was identified by polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) and further confirmed by direct sequencing. RESULTS: The normal controls had the same SSCP bands. In 25 TSC patients, a sporadic case was found to display variant banding pattern and be heterozygous for 352 insA mutation by sequencing. In 23 parents

Evaluating structure and content of parent-implemented early logopaedic intervention models following the three stages of communicative development in children with cleft lip and/or palate: Systematic literature review with narrative synthesis.

BACKGROUND: The development of communication, speech and language follows three stages (development of the parent-child relationship, interactions and actual speech and language acquisition). Children born with cleft lip and/or palate are at increased risk of communicative problems while parents may be going through an emotionally difficult time. Early parent-implemented logopaedic intervention that supports both parents and child is important. Three systematic reviews have examined the effects of early speech and language interventions, but not their structure and content. AIMS: To investiga

Hearing parents learning sign language: a call for systemic changes.

Around 90-95% of deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children are born to hearing parents, most of whom have no prior knowledge of a sign language. This creates a risk of language deprivation, with long-term effects on language, cognitive, and social-emotional development. Research shows that sign language input supports children's development without hindering spoken language acquisition. Yet many hearing parents of DHH children are discouraged from learning sign language by unfounded claims from professionals or by restrictive support systems. In the Netherlands, parental sign language courses ar

Parental age effects and Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a progressive neurodevelopmental disorder, and pathogenic Methyl-CpG-binding Protein 2 (MECP2) variants are identified in >95% of individuals with typical RTT. Most of RTT-causing variants in MECP2 are de novo and usually on the paternally inherited X chromosome. While paternal age has been reported to be associated with increased risk of genetic disorders, it is unknown whether parental age contributes to the risk of the development of RTT. Clinical data including parental age, RTT diagnostic status, and clinical severity are collected from 1226 participants with RTT an

Parent Understanding and Satisfaction with NICU Discharge for Infants with Medical Complexity: A Scoping Review of Discharge Instruction Tools.

Background Infants with medical complexity discharged from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) often require technology-supported care and frequent follow-up. In this setting, discharge safety depends on parent caregivers' understanding of instructions, confidence performing specialized tasks, and the reliability of post-discharge coordination. Structured discharge instruction approaches and digital tools are increasingly used to standardize education and reinforce learning. Objective To map and synthesize evidence on parent caregiver-perceived understanding and satisfaction with NICU disc

The Impact of Physical Activity Restrictions on Health-Related Fitness in Children with Congenital Heart Disease.

Children with congenital heart disease (CHD) are often restricted from some types of physical activity (PA) despite the lack of evidence regarding the need to restrict recreational PA, apart from those with rhythm disorders. This study retrospectively investigated the associations between parent-reported activity restrictions (on-going need to restrict exertion, body contact or competition) and measures of health-related fitness among 236 children (8.2 ± 2.1 years, range 4−12 years) treated for single ventricle (n = 104), tetralogy of Fallot (n = 48), transposition of the great arteries (n = 4

Parent vessel occlusion after Pipeline embolization of cerebral aneurysms of the anterior circulation.

OBJECTIVE The Pipeline Embolization Device (PED) is now a well-established option for the treatment of giant or complex aneurysms, especially those arising from the anterior circulation. Considering the purpose of such treatment is to maintain patency of the parent vessel, postembolization occlusion of the parent artery can be regarded as an untoward outcome. Antiplatelet therapy in the posttreatment period is therefore required to minimize such events. Here, the authors present a series of patients with anterior circulation aneurysms treated with the PED who subsequently experienced parent ve

Teleneonatology: a major tool for the future.

Hospitals have, for centuries, maintained a central position in the health care system, providing care for critically ill patients. Despite being a cornerstone of health care delivery, we are witnessing the beginning of a major transformation in their function. There are several forces driving this transformation, including health care costs, shortage of health care professionals, volume of people with chronic diseases, consumerism, health care reform, and hospital errors. The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo, Utah, began an aggressive redesig

Functioning of families with primary school-age children conceived using anonymous donor sperm.

STUDY QUESTION: How do families with children conceived using donor sperm operate as the children grow up? SUMMARY ANSWER: Families with children aged 5-13 years conceived through anonymous donor sperm function well, when compared with other family types with children of the same developmental stage. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Previous studies on family relationships after donor sperm conception have been reassuring. However, these studies have suffered from methodological limitations due to small sample sizes, respondent biases and absence of appropriate controls. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION:

Increasing confidence for pediatric COVID-19 and influenza vaccines using messages affirming parental autonomy: A randomized online experiment.

OBJECTIVES: To test the effects of autonomy-affirming pediatric vaccine messages for U.S. parents on overall vaccine confidence and intention to vaccinate against COVID-19 and flu while examining potential moderation effects of political ideology. METHODS: We conducted an online randomized messaging experiment with 1718 parents, balanced across political ideology (31 % conservative, 37 % moderate, 31 % liberal). We compared four types of vaccine messages: 2 (autonomy-confirming vs authoritarian tone) x 2 (COVID-19 or flu). Parents viewed three messages within a single condition and rated thei
