Tissue burns due to contact between a skin surface and highly conducting metallic media in the presence of inter-tissue boiling.

A numerical-based model was developed and implemented to determine the spatial and temporal temperature distributions within skin tissue resulting from thermal contact with a heated and high thermal conductivity metallic medium. In the presence of wet tissue, boiling is likely to occur, thereby affecting the probability of inducing burns. This investigation deals with how contact between a hot, highly conductive metallic material and skin gives rise to burns. In particular, the study focuses on the likelihood that metals typically used in cooking or industrial applications may cause burns. Ins

Exercise and the circadian variation in body temperature measures.

This study examined the existence of circadian rhythms in rectal temperature (Tr) and selected skin temperatures at rest and during light (82 W) and medium (147 W) exercise on a cycle ergometer. Each intensity was sustained for 5 min and then followed by a graded exercise test to exhaustion. The Tr and skin temperatures were also measured on cessation of exercise and 4 min post-exercise. Fifteen males participated, measurements covering six interspersed times of day. The mean exercise time to exhaustion of 19.83 min was independent of the time of day and caused a constant rise of 0.7 degree C …

The microclimate under dressings applied to intact weight-bearing skin: Infrared thermography studies.

BACKGROUND: When a patient is lying in a hospital bed (e.g. supine or prone), bodyweight forces distort soft tissues by compression, tension and shear, and may lead to the onset of pressure ulcers in those who are stationary and insensate, especially at their pelvic region. Altered localized microclimate conditions, particularly elevated skin temperatures leading to perspiration and resulting in skin moisture or wetness, are known to further increase the risk for pressure ulcers, which is already high in immobile patients. METHODS: We have used infrared thermography to measure local skin temp…

The effect of pre-cooling intensity on cooling efficiency and exercise performance.

Although pre-cooling is known to enhance exercise performance, the optimal cooling intensity is unknown. We hypothesized that mild cooling opposed to strong cooling circumvents skin vasoconstriction and thermogenesis, and thus improves cooling efficiency reflected in improved time to exhaustion. Eight males undertook three randomized trials, consisting of a pre-cooling and an exercise session. During the pre-cooling, performed in a room of 24.6 +/- 0.4 degrees C and 24 +/- 6% relative humidity, participants received either 45 min of mild cooling using an evaporative cooling shirt or strong coo

Temperature measurement in term and preterm neonates.

Body temperatures of 99 term and 44 preterm infants were measured at four sites: core (5 cm beyond the anus, with an electronic telethermometer), rectum (2 cm, with a mercury-in-glass thermometer), axilla, and between the skin and mattress. Temperatures measured at the four sites agreed closely in this group of largely normothermic infants. However, five of seven term infants with abnormal core temperature (greater than 1.5 SD below or above the mean) would have been judged to be normothermic by each of the three other measurements. The temperatures in preterm infants were lower and varied les

Thermal Injuries Caused by Water from Loose Garden Hoses.

This is a monitoring research, the purpose of which is to point out the danger of scalding with water from loose garden hoses. All the stated data are the result of this research, which occurred during the month of August. To adequately compare the maximum temperature that the water reaches in garden hoses exposed to sunlight, 2 different surfaces were chosen, namely grass and concrete. It has been found that water in garden hoses, which lie in a place exposed to sunlight, is able to reach temperatures at which, in case of contact with human skin, there is a risk of scalding. The results confi

The optimum hand temperature to study nerve conduction in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome.

To define the skin temperature at which diseased nerves are better differentiated from the healthy. Motor and sensory conduction of median and ulnar nerve were evaluated in 52 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and 52 matched healthy controls at environmental skin temperature (mean 32-33 °C), after warming by an average of 2 °C and cooling to approximately 6 °C below baseline. In the hot condition, group comparisons for the median nerve showed a similar rate of distal motor latency (DML) reduction and sensory conduction velocity (SCV) increase in CTS and controls. With cold, the rate o…

Relationship between ventilatory response and body temperature during prolonged submaximal exercise.

We examined whether an increase in skin temperature or the rate of increase in core body temperature influences the relationship between minute ventilation (Ve) and core temperature during prolonged exercise in the heat. Thirteen subjects exercised for 60 min on a cycle ergometer at 50% of peak oxygen uptake while wearing a suit perfused with water at 10 degrees C (T10), 35 degrees C (T35), or 45 degrees C (T45). During the exercise, esophageal temperature (Tes), skin temperature, heart rate (HR), Ve, tidal volume, respiratory frequency (f), respiratory gases, blood pressure (BP), and blood la…

Biaxial mechanics of thermally denaturing skin - Part 1: Experiments.

The mechanics of collagenous soft tissues, such as skin, are sensitive to heat. Thus, quantifying and modeling thermo-mechanical coupling of skin is critical to our understanding of skin's physiology, pathophysiology, and its treatment. However, key gaps persist in our knowledge about skin's coupled thermo-mechanics. Among them, we haven't quantified the role of skin's microstructural organization in its response to superphysiological loading. To fill this gap, we conducted a comprehensive set of experiments in which we combined biaxial mechanical testing with histology and two-photon imaging

The utilization of infrared imaging for occupational disease study in industrial work.

Infrared imaging has been used to visualize superficial temperatures in industrial employers standing and working in an indoor environment at 22°C. Temperature distributions and changes have been recorded digitally and analyzed. Mean skin temperatures determined by this method have been compared with superficial temperatures obtained with a probe thermocouple. During working hours, surface temperatures were higher over extensor muscles than over other structures and their spatial distributions differed dramatically from those observed before working hours. The authors also analyzed the cold wa…

Temperature and humidity independently influence thermoregulatory responses during Finnish sauna bathing.

This study examined the effects of sauna air temperature and relative humidity (RH) on acute cardiovascular and thermoregulatory responses under typical Finnish sauna conditions, where participants were free to throw water onto the heated stones (löyly). Fifty recreationally active healthy adults (32 males, 18 females, 35.4 ± 10.4 years, 174 ± 9.9 cm, 77 ± 17 kg) completed four 10-minute sauna sessions, each separated by 30-minute recovery. Core temperature (Tcore), skin temperature, heart rate (HR), body mass, and perceptual responses were measured, alongside detailed multi-point environmenta…

A study of the relationship between temperature and the infectivity of Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma haematobium cercariae.

It was shown that maintenance of cercariae of S. mansoni and S. haematobium at low (10degreesC) and high temperatures (40degreesC) markedly increased their mortality during penetration of mammalian host skin. These increased losses in the skin accounted for the known decrease in infectivity, as measured by adult worm recovery, of cercariae kept at low or high temperatures.

The Use of Thermography as an Auxiliary Method for Monitoring Convalescence after Facelift Surgery: A Case Study.

Although IR thermography is widely used in medical diagnostics, there are no reports that describe the use of IR thermography in the evaluation of post-plastic-surgery regeneration processes. The aim of the study was to evaluate the potential of thermography as a method which, among others, allows us to determine the location and extent of the inflammatory process, supporting the clinical evaluation of the patient's convalescence after a facelift surgery using the SMAS technique. During the study and in order to monitor the convalescence process, the patient had a series of face thermograms pe
