Skull roentgenography in the evaluation of head injury.

The role of skull roentgenograms in determining choice of therapy, hospital admission, and length of hospitalization was evaluated in 106 consecutive patients with head injury. Thirty patients were discharged from the emergency room after initial evaluation and had uneventful recovery. Seventy-six were admitted and discharged without operative treatment one to ten days later. Only five had pathologic skull findings roentgenographically. Of these, one was discharged from the emergency department; the remaining four were admitted because of abnormal neurologic findings. All five recovered uneven…

Sarcomatous degeneration of Paget disease in the skull.

Two cases of Paget disease complicated by sarcomatous degeneration in the skull are presented. The bony disarray of underlying Paget disease of the skull may mask the cortical destruction produced by a developing sarcoma. The role of computerized tomography in the early detection of malignant change is stressed.

Intrauterine depressed skull fractures of the newborn.

Intrauterine depressed skull fractures are reported only occasionally. In reviewing the literature it seems clear that pressure of the fetal head against the maternal bony structures, mainly the sacral promontory, accounts for most of the so-called "spontaneous" congenital depressed skull fractures. Rather than true fractures, they are focal congenital moulding depressions. On the other hand, trauma to the mother's abdomen and traumatic delivery are accepted pathological mechanisms for such lesions; most commonly they are ascribed to inexpert application of the forceps blades or undue force by…

Approach to diagnosis of skull base lesions.

The ability to operate safely on the skull base and yet preserve cranial nerves and leave the patient with minimum neurologic deficit is a fairly new development. The field is expanding rapidly, and lesions that were once deemed unresectable can now be resected. With this in mind, one must maintain an extremely high index of suspicion for lesions in this area. Early diagnosis of skull base lesions is enhanced by a careful neuro-otologic history and physical examination on all patients with complaints of pain, headache, or cranial nerve dysfunction, either motor or sensory. Based on a thorough …

[The emissaries of the human skull (author's transl)].

The range of hemodynamic conductivity of the venous outlets of the skull, called emissary veins, and factors influencing them have been explored in 888 closed and 210 opened human skulls: Exept the condylar canal and the mastoid emissary vein only emissary veins joined to cranial nerves are of importance. The straighter the connection to the heart the wider the related emisary vein tends to be, which explains the predominance of the right emissary veins in the occipital cranial fossa. The right and the left jugular vein as well as the jugular and the mastoid emissary vein compensate each other…

Management of depressed skull fracture in the newborn.

The authors describe 3 cases of neonatal depressed skull fracture subsequent to difficult delivery, treated without surgical elevation. None of the patients developed neurological deficits, cosmetic deformity or electroencephalographic signs of epileptiform activity. Neonatal depressed skull fractures not associated with focal neurological signs may not require surgical therapy; we are not certain what the absolute criteria for operation should be.

The skull in gonadal dysgenesis. A roentgenometric study.

Skull radiographs of 54 patients with Turner's syndrome have been studied. The following characteristic findings were frequently noted: mastoid processes of definitely decreased dimensions, small facial bones which were proportional to the stunted growth of the patients, enlargement and increased thickness of the mandible, extensive calcification of the petro-clinoid ligaments, excessive pneumatisation of the paranasal sinuses and increased angle of the base of the skull.
