The SWIFTSS hernia model: putting ultra-low-cost hernia simulation in everybody's hands.

PURPOSE: Low-cost hernia simulation models exist, but are commercially sold, use technology such as 3-D printing or have the manufacturing instructions behind pay-walls, rendering them beyond the reach of trainers in low-income countries. This perpetuates dependence on expatriate training missions. We designed an ultra-low-cost hernia training model using only materials readily available in low-resource settings supported by a freely available "You-tube style" how-to-make-it instructional video. METHODS: A prototype ultra-low-cost model was tested by surgical trainers and trainees in three lo

A Wrist Brace with Integrated Piezoelectric Sensors for Real-Time Biomechanical Monitoring in Weightlifting.

This study presents a self-powered smart wrist brace integrated with a piezoelectric sensor for real-time biomechanical monitoring during weightlifting activities. The system was designed to quantify wrist flexion across multiple loading conditions (0 kg, 0.5 kg, and 1.0 kg), leveraging mechanical strain-induced voltage generation to capture angular displacement. A flexible PVDF film was embedded within a custom-fitted wrist brace and tested on male and female participants performing controlled wrist flexion. The resulting voltage signals were analyzed to extract root-mean-square (RMS) outputs

Reversible light-responsive protein hydrogel for on-demand cell encapsulation and release.

The design of biomaterials that can reconfigure on-demand in response to external stimuli is an emerging area in materials research. However, achieving reversible assembly of protein-based biomaterials by light input remains a major challenge. Here, we present the engineering of a new protein material that is capable of switching between liquid and solid state reversibly, controlled by lights of different wavelengths. The materials are created by incorporating a light-responsive mutant Dronpa protein domain into the backbone of Elastin-Like Proteins (termed DELPs). We show that the DELP materi

Biobased: Biostimulants and biogenic nanoparticles enter the scene.

Anthropogenic activities generally consume non-renewable resources and release polluting substances into the environment. Concerning agriculture, the cropping systems are almost based on exploiting non-renewable resources. In recent years, increasing interest has been devoted to reusing agricultural, food and other biomass wastes, considered relevant as they can be seen as resources rich in compounds that can find numerous applications. Biomass biorefining has been successfully applied and has opened up sustainable alternatives to the disposal of agricultural, agroindustrial and food wastes. I

Biocompatible and Biodegradable 3D Graphene/Collagen Fiber Hybrids for High-Performance Conductive Networks and Sensors.

Polymer-based flexible conductive materials are crucial for wearable electronics, electronic skin, and other smart materials. However, their development and commercial applications have been hampered by the lack of strain tolerance in the conductive network, poor bonding with polymers, discomfort during wear, and a lack of biocompatibility. This study utilized oil-tanned leather with a natural network structure, high toughness, and high tensile deformation recovery as a structural template. A graphene (Gr) conductive network was then constructed on the collagen network of the leather, with coo…

From metabolic node to smart building block: α-Ketoglutarate-empowered biomaterials for programmable cell fate.

α-Ketoglutarate serves as a metabolic node in tricarboxylic acid cycle. In recent years, its role has expanded far beyond that of an energy supplier, emerging as a crucial regulator that programs cell fate by modulating the epigenetic landscape, delaying cellular aging, and maintaining immune homeostasis. However, the clinical translation of AKG has been severely hindered by the inherent pharmacokinetic deficiencies of its monomeric form, such as low bioavailability, short in vivo half-life, and poor tissue targeting. This review proposes a paradigm shift: redefining AKG from a mere "therapeut

Preparation and performance of a stimuli-responsive drug delivery system: novel light-triggered temperature-sensitive drug-loaded microcapsules.

Stimuli-responsive/smart drug delivery systems (DDSs), particularly those that use temperature as a stimuli-response factor to activate drug release, are the subject of recent research. A phase change material (PCM) is a popular thermally responsive material that can be used as a drug carrier and only when the system temperature is above the phase change point is the drug released following the phase change material changing from solid to liquid. In this study, a novel NIR light-triggered temperature-sensitive drug delivery system is developed for controllable release of acyclovir (ACV). For t

A multifunctional luminogen: integrating AIE, persistent RTP, and stimuli-responsiveness for advanced information encryption, water quantification, and visualized acid vapor detection.

The development of multifunctional purely organic room-temperature phosphorescence materials remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a pyridine-bromobenzene-based luminogen named NNPA was successfully prepared, integrating both aggregation-induced emission (AIE) activity and pH-dependent fluorescence emission. More importantly, the fluorescence emission maxima of NNPA exhibits a monotonic red shift with increasing water content in THF-H2O mixtures, enabling precise water quantification over a broad range (0-90%). Remarkable acid-triggered fluorescence emission shifts are demonstrated, transiti

Synergic Magnetic-Dielectric Ni/Co-Anchored Carbon Aerogels From Cellulose Nanofiber Scaffolds for Electromagnetic Shielding, Infrared Stealth, and Secure RFID Technologies.

The growing demand for lightweight and sustainable materials capable of managing electromagnetic radiation, thermal signatures, and wireless privacy requires multifunctional architectures. Here, ultralight magnetic-dielectric carbon aerogels are fabricated from TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TO-CNF) networks coordinated with Ni2+ or Co2+ ions. During carbonization, the ions are transformed into uniformly distributed ferromagnetic nanodomains embedded within a partially graphitized carbon framework, generating synergistic dielectric and magnetic loss mechanisms. The resulting aerogels exhi

Polymer-Driven and Hybrid Actuation Fabrics: Integrating Responsive Polymeric Materials and Hierarchical Textile Architectures.

Textile fabrics have served as a second skin for millennia, yet their potential as active engineering systems is only beginning to be realized. Historically, most smart textiles have treated fabrics as passive substrates for sensors, conductors, or rigid motors. A paradigm shift is underway toward intrinsic actuation fabrics, where active polymers-including liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs), twisted and coiled polymer actuators (TCPAs), and shape memory polymers (SMPs), as well as polymeric yarn/fabric matrices integrating shape memory alloys (SMAs), serve as functional engines to generate moti

In Situ CO2-Induced Hydrogels for Enhancing Carbon Sequestration in Saline Aquifers.

Carbon sequestration in saline aquifers underpins global net‑zero emission goals, yet existing CO2 storage capacity remains inadequate, and conventional approaches exhibit limited adaptability to reservoir environment. Here, we introduce smart, injectable soft materials based on CO2‑triggered hydrogels integrated with tailored deep eutectic solvents (DESs) to boost sequestration. The hydrogel forms upon CO2‑triggered protonation of erucamine (a C22‑tailed tertiary amine) within its aqueous dispersion, which promotes electrostatic interactions and hydrophobic self‑assembly. The DESs (choline ch

Two-Dimensional Metallic Niobium Diselenide for Sub-micrometer-Thin Antennas in Wireless Communication Systems.

The state-of-the-art of the Internet of things (IoT) and smart electronics demands advances in thin and flexible radio frequency (RF) antennas for wireless communication systems. So far, nanostructured materials such as metals, carbon nanotubes, graphene, MXene, and conducting polymers have been investigated due to their noteworthy electrical conductivity. However, most antennas based on metallic materials are thick, which limits their application in miniaturized and portable electronic devices. Herein, we report two-dimensional (2D) metallic niobium diselenide (NbSe2) for a monopole patch RF

Conformationally Gated Interconversion of Photophysical Pathways Enables Invertible Circularly Polarized Luminescence.

Precise control of excited-state chirality in supramolecular aggregates is hindered by the rapid erasure of ground-state chiral information via ultrafast structural relaxation and energy dissipation. Here we report a strategy to overcome this limitation using 1,4-disubstituted benzene-based molecular rotors engineered for maximal rotational freedom. These motifs self-assemble into loosely packed architectures that simultaneously suppress intermolecular quenching and steric strain, thereby unlocking an aggregated twisted intramolecular charge transfer (A-TICT) state absent in tightly stacked an
