The State-of-the-Art of the Humoral Memory Response to Snakebites: Insights from the Yanomami Population.

Snakebite envenomation (SBE)-induced immunity refers to individuals who have been previously bitten by a snake and developed a protective immune response against subsequent envenomations. The notion stems from observations of individuals, including in the indigenous population, who present only mild signs and symptoms after surviving multiple SBEs. Indeed, these observations have engendered scientific interest and prompted inquiries into the potential development of a protective immunity from exposure to snake toxins. This review explores the evidence of a protective immune response developing

Alarmins and inflammatory aspects related to snakebite envenomation.

Snakebite envenoming is characterized by the injection of a mixture of proteins/toxins present in venom following the bite of a venomous snake. The toxins have potent bioactivity capability to impact different aspects of envenomation evolution. The cascade of immune responses initiated by the participation of venom and/or toxins isolated from snake venom can contribute to the systemic and local inflammatory effects observed in victims of envenomation. To understand envenomation, a deeper comprehension of the numerous cells, mediators, and components that comprise the immune system reaction to

Arabian Levantine viper bite induces thrombocytopenia - a case report.

Snakebites have been reported to induce hematological complications. Thrombocytopenia usually occurs secondary to disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and coagulopathy induced by the snake bite. However, thrombocytopenia can develop after the snake bite, even in the absence of significant coagulopathy. We reported the case of a 36-year-old Jordanian male patient who was bitten by Arabian Macrovipera Lebetina Obtusa (Levantine viper), which developed venom-induced severe thrombocytopenia without coagulopathy. A progressive drop in platelet count was observed during his admission. His co

Envenomation by the Eastern coral snake (Micrurus fulvius fulvius). A study of 39 victims.

We gathered data on 39 victims of Eastern coral snake bite over a 12-year period. The most common situation resulting in snakebite was erroneous identification of the snake as the nonpoisonous scarlet king snake. While no patient died, several experienced severe envenomation, including bulbospinal respiratory paralysis. We found that neurologic symptoms may be delayed for 12 hours, and then may be precipitous. Envenomation occurs in 75% of the persons bitten by a coral snake. Antivenin is effective and should be intravenously administered early to patients who have been bitten by a positively

Assessing the Interactions between Snake Venom Metalloproteinases and Hydroxamate Inhibitors Using Kinetic and ITC Assays, Molecular Dynamics Simulations and MM/PBSA-Based Scoring Functions.

Bothrops species are the main cause of snake bites in rural communities of tropical developing countries of Central and South America. Envenomation by Bothrops snakes is characterized by prominent local inflammation, hemorrhage and necrosis as well as systemic hemostatic disturbances. These pathological effects are mainly caused by the major toxins of the viperidae venoms, the snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMPs). Despite the antivenom therapy efficiency to block the main toxic effects on bite victims, this treatment shows limited efficacy to prevent tissue necrosis. Thus, drug-like inhibito…

Comparison of phylogeny, venom composition and neutralization by antivenom in diverse species of bothrops complex.

In Latin America, Bothrops snakes account for most snake bites in humans, and the recommended treatment is administration of multispecific Bothrops antivenom (SAB--soro antibotrópico). However, Bothrops snakes are very diverse with regard to their venom composition, which raises the issue of which venoms should be used as immunizing antigens for the production of pan-specific Bothrops antivenoms. In this study, we simultaneously compared the composition and reactivity with SAB of venoms collected from six species of snakes, distributed in pairs from three distinct phylogenetic clades: Bothrops…

Prognostic factors for local necrosis in Bothrops jararaca (Brazilian pit viper) bites.

The prognostic factors related to envenoming are not very well known. This study aims to identify prognostic factors for necrosis in envenoming by Bothrops jararaca. We analysed 779 medical records of patients bitten by B. jararaca and treated at the Hospital Vital Brazil, Butantan Institute, São Paulo, Brazil, between 1982 and 1990: 111 cases with necrosis were compared with the remaining cases. The length of the snake, the bite site, the month of the accident, pain, oedema, ecchymosis, blisters, systemic bleeding, shock, and the use of tourniquet were statistically associated with the presen

Fatal brown snake (Pseudonaja textilis) envenomation despite the use of antivenom.

OBJECTIVE: To report two cases of fatal brown snake envenomation in adults despite the use of appropriate antivenom. CLINICAL FEATURES: Two … administration of large doses of appropriate antivenom and full supportive care. CONCLUSION: Brown snake bites remain extremely dangerous despite the availability of specific antivenom. In severe cases associated with myocardial depression and gross coagulopathy, death may occur rapidly despite the use of conventional doses of antivenom. In such patients the …

Cross-reactivity of bardick snake venom with death adder antivenom.

A case of a young man who was bitten by a bardick snake (Notechis curtus) and who, apart from marked local swelling, had neither signs of coagulopathy nor neurological symptoms, is reported. The bardick snake venom taken from the site of the bite reacted strongly with the death adder antivenom in the snake venom detection kit, but did not react with the Notechis antivenom. This anomalous reactivity was confirmed when dried bardick snake venom was used. In-vitro observations of the bardick snake venom showed that it had anticoagulant properties similar to those of death adder venom, and was not

A case report of human intoxication due to a snakebite by the opisthoglyphous dipsadid Thamnodynastes lanei Bailey, Thomas & Silva-Jr, 2005.

We present a case of human intoxication due to a snakebite by the opisthoglyphous dipsadid Thamnodynastes lanei. A 26-year-old man was bitten on the right hand and was not medicated. Bleeding lasted a few seconds, while paresthesia, chills, and headache persisted for up to 10 hours. The pain disappeared after a week, and the edema, itching, and prickling persisted for another 3 days. Although this patient's symptoms were typical of bites by South American opisthoglyphous snakes, they persisted longer than those of bites by some congeneric species. Our report adds a species to the list of medic

Use of CroFab antivenin in the management of a very young pediatric copperhead envenomation.

The use of crotalid Fab antivenin (CroFab) in the treatment of snake envenomations in the pediatric population is still an underexplored area. There are very limited data to confirm the efficacy and safety of dosing children the same as adults and even less information available to evaluate this antivenin use in copperhead snake bites in children. We report the first use of crotalid Fab antivenin in an adult dose for a copperhead snake envenomation in a 2-year-old child. She had rapid resolution of symptoms with no adverse effects. The report serves to increase the literature supporting the cu…

Medical management of a child treated for two unique envenomation episodes via captive snakes in a 60-day period: A case report.

Venomous snake bites can result in irreversible damage, leading to respiratory dysfunction, bleeding disorders, kidney damage, or serious complications. In recent years, with the popularity of online shopping in China, snakes can be easily purchased and kept as pets, even if some areas are not natural habitats for certain kinds of snakes. A 13-year-old boy purchased two venomous snakes online as pets. On April 16, 2019,the boy was bitten by a B. multicinctus(Bungarus multicinctus), and he had mild difficulty breathing and limb weakness. He was discharged after symptomatic treatment with B. mul…

Fatalities from venomous and nonvenomous animals in the United States (1999-2007).

OBJECTIVE: To review recent (1999-2007) US mortality data from deaths caused by nonvenomous and venomous animals and compare recent data with historic data. METHODS: The CDC WONDER Database was queried to return all animal-related fatalities between 1999 and 2007. Rates for animal-related fatalities were calculated using the estimated 2003 US population. Inclusion criteria included all mortalities that were a consequence of bite, contact, attack, or envenomation (ICD-10 codes W53-W59 and X20-X29). RESULTS: There were 1802 animal-related fatalities with the majority coming from nonvenomous an

Poisonous snakebite in Utah.

A retrospective study was done of poisonous snakebite in Utah to determine the current epidemiology and scope of treatment, reviewing emergency department logs and other sources statewide for a 69-month period. Of 61 cases of poisonous snakebite identified, 13 occurred in snake hobbyists or venom laboratory personnel and were considered nonaccidental, and 48 were inflicted by native noncaptive snakes. These bites were considered accidental, and all were presumed to be from rattlesnakes. Nearly three fourths of the victims were male, ranging in age from 2 to 56 years (mean, 22 years). Most acci

Management of snakebites by the staff of a rural clinic: the impact of providing free antivenom in a nurse-led clinic in Meserani, Tanzania.

In Tanzania, the impact, on clinical outcomes and treatment-seeking behaviour, of a rural, nurse-led clinic that provides free, antivenom-based treatment of snakebite envenomation was recently assessed. Data on all 85 patients who, between April 2007 and the end of 2009, received treatment for snakebite envenomation at the Snake Park clinic in Meserani, Tanzania, were collected prospectively. Although only four cases of snakebite envenomation were treated in the last 9 months of 2007, 34 such cases were treated in 2008 and 47 in 2009. The 85 snakebite cases had a mean age of 23 years and a mal

Snakes of medical significance in India: the first reported case of envenoming by the Levantine viper (Macrovipera lebetina).

This article reports for the first time the medical significance of the Levantine viper (Macrovipera lebetina) in India. This snake is found in India in the mountainous regions of Jammu and Kashmir and is capable of causing necrosis and hemostatic manifestations, as seen in the case reported here. It is thus a class II snake of medical significance, as defined by the World Health Organization grading scale. This finding reinforces the recent decision by the Indian Government to abandon the term "Big Four" to describe important venomous species in India. Levantine viper venom is not included in

A five-year retrospective review of snakebite patients admitted to a tertiary university hospital in Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: Although the majority of the snakebite cases in Malaysia are due to non-venomous snakes, venomous bites cause significant morbidity and mortality if treatment measures, especially ant-venom therapy, are delayed. METHODS: To determine the demographic characteristics, we conducted a retrospective study on all snakebite patients admitted to the Emergency Department of Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) from January 2006 to December 2010. RESULTS: In the majority of the 260 cases that we found (138 cases or 52.9%), the snake species was unidentified. The most common venomous s
