Applying the WHO ICF framework to communication assessment and goal setting in Huntington's disease: a case discussion.

PURPOSE: Huntington's Disease (HD) is a fatal, hereditary neurodegenerative disorder that is characterized by a triad of motor, cognitive and psychiatric symptoms that impact on both communicative effectiveness and the treatment techniques used to maximize communicative participation. The purpose of this article is to describe the application of the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) to communication assessment and goal setting for a 37 year old man with HD. METHOD: Communication assessment consisted of qualitative interviews b

Male-specific alteration in excitatory post-synaptic development and social interaction in pre-natal valproic acid exposure model of autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a pervasive developmental disorder characterized by three main behavioral symptoms including social deficits, impaired communication, and stereotyped and repetitive behaviors. ASD prevalence shows gender bias to male. Prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA), a drug used in epilepsy and bipolar disorder, induces autistic symptoms in both human and rodents. As we reported previously, prenatally VPA-exposed animals at E12 showed impairment in social behavior without any overt reproductive toxicity. Social interactions were not significantly different between mal

A pathogenic P4HTM gene variant in two brothers with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition that involves limitations in social communication and various stereotypical repetitive behaviors. Genetic and environmental factors both play a role in the etiology. Numerous genetic syndromes accompanying autism spectrum disorders have been reported. Hypoventilation, hypotonia, intellectual disability, epilepsy, eye abnormality (HIDEA) syndrome is a rare genetic condition consisting of a combination of features such as hypoventilation, hypotonia, intellectual disability, eye abnormalities, and epilepsy. Very few cases of HIDEA syndrom

Comparison of ICD-10R, DSM-IV-TR and DSM-5 in an adult autism spectrum disorder diagnostic clinic.

An Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis is often used to access services. We investigated whether ASD diagnostic outcome varied when DSM-5 was used compared to ICD-10R and DSM-IV-TR in a clinical sample of 150 intellectually able adults. Of those diagnosed with an ASD using ICD-10R, 56 % met DSM-5 ASD criteria. A further 19 % met DSM-5 (draft) criteria for Social Communication Disorder. Of those diagnosed with Autistic Disorder/Asperger Syndrome on DSM-IV-TR, 78 % met DSM-5 ASD criteria. Sensitivity of DSM-5 was significantly increased by reducing the number of criteria required for a DSM-…

Dyskinesias differentiate autistic disorder from catatonia.

Autistic disorder and catatonia are neuropsychiatric syndromes defined by impairments in social interaction, communication, and restricted, stereotypical motor routines. Assessments of children with these disorders are typically restricted in scope by the patients' limited ability to comprehend directions. The authors performed systematic assessments of dyskinesias on six prepubertal boys with autistic disorder and mental retardation and on one adolescent male with catatonia to determine if this type of information could be routinely obtained. The boys with autistic disorder had more stereotyp

Visual impairment and traits of autism in children.

Visual impairment present from birth or from an early childhood may lead to psychosocial and emotional disorders. 11-40% of children in the group with visual impairment show traits of autism. The aim of this paper was to present the selected examples of how visual impairment in children is related to the occurrence of autism and to describe the available tools for diagnosing autism in children with visual impairment. So far the relation between visual impairment in children and autism has not been sufficiently confirmed. Psychiatric and psychological diagnosis of children with visual impairmen

Systemic multimodal approach to speech therapy treatment in autistic children.

INTRODUCTION: Conditions in which speech therapy treatment is applied in autistic children are often not in accordance with characteristics of opinions and learning of people with autism. A systemic multimodal approach means motivating autistic people to develop their language speech skill through the procedure which allows reliving of their personal experience according to the contents that are presented in the their natural social environment. This research was aimed at evaluating the efficiency of speech treatment based on the systemic multimodal approach to the work with autistic children.

Evidence that the pattern of visuomotor sequence learning is altered in children with autism.

Motor deficits are commonly reported in autism, with one of the most consistent findings being impaired execution of skilled movements and gestures. Given the developmental nature of autism, it is possible that deficits in motor/procedural learning contribute to impaired acquisition of motor skills. Thus, careful examination of mechanisms underlying learning and memory may be critical to understanding the neural basis of autism. A previous study reported impaired motor learning in children with high-functioning autism (HFA); however, it is unclear whether the observed deficits in motor learnin

Under the banyan tree--exclusion and inclusion of people with mental disorders in rural North India.

BACKGROUND: Social exclusion is both cause and consequence of mental disorders. People with mental disorders (PWMD) are among the most socially excluded in all societies yet little is known about their experiences in North India. This qualitative study aims to describe experiences of exclusion and inclusion of PWMD in two rural communities in Uttar Pradesh, India. METHODS: In-depth interviews with 20 PWMD and eight caregivers were carried out in May 2013. Interviews probed experiences of help-seeking, stigma, discrimination, exclusion, participation, agency and inclusion in their households a

Neighborhood determinants of mood and anxiety disorders among men who have sex with men in New York City.

PURPOSE: We examined the relationship between economic, physical, and social characteristics of neighborhoods, where men who have sex with men (MSM) lived and socialized, and symptom scores of depression and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). METHODS: Participants came from a cross-sectional study of a population-based sample of New York City MSM recruited in 2010-2012 (n = 1126). Archival and survey-based data were obtained on neighborhoods, where the men lived and where they socialized most often. RESULTS: MSM who socialized in neighborhoods with more economic deprivation and greater gene

Acute cannabidiol treatment reverses behavioral impairments induced by embryonic valproic acid exposure in male mice.

Cannabidiol (CBD), the major non-psychotomimetic compound of the Cannabis sativa plant, has shown promising effects in addressing various symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This neurodevelopmental disorder typically impacts cognitive, behavioral, social communication, and motor skills domains. However, effective treatments for the wide range of symptoms associated with the disorder are limited and may trigger undesirable effects. Embryonic exposure to valproic acid (VPA, 500 mg/kg at 12° day embryonic age) in rodents is a consolidated environmental model for studying beha

Does selectively endorsing different approaches to treating mental illness affect lay beliefs about the cause and course of mental illness?

The current paper reports three experimental studies that investigate how selectively emphasising different treatment approaches (biological, psychological or social) for mental health difficulties affects lay beliefs about those illnesses. Online experimental vignettes exposed participants to different treatment narratives for a clinical case of Major Depressive Disorder (Study 1; n=164), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (Study 2; n=173) and Schizophrenia (Study 3, n=170). Measures of causal attributions and illness perceptions assessed effects on beliefs about the causes and course of the illnes

Rett syndrome (RS) and profound intellectual disability: cognitive and communicative similarities and differences.

The communicative and cognitive behaviours of a group of 10 girls with Rett syndrome (RS) were compared with those of a group of girls with non-Rett profound intellectual disability (NPID). The results suggest that the girls with RS were a comparatively homogenous group demonstrating similar cognitive patterns and fewer communicative behaviours, communicative functions, and total numbers of inferred communicative acts than the NPID group. Fewer girls with RS were intentionally communicating to communicative partners. Implications of these findings will be discussed in this paper.

Autism Spectrum Disorder: Integrating Genetic and Environmental Risk.

Autism spectrum disorder is a common neurodevelopmental condition, defined by persistent deficits in social interaction and communication, as well as restricted repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. Autism spectrum disorder is highly heterogeneous, encompassing a broad range of clinical presentations and suggesting it includes multiple etiological subtypes. Although no unified cause has been established, accumulating evidence indicates that genetic susceptibility interacts with environmental and developmental factors to shape diverse phenotypic outcomes. This review summar

Deciphering the roles of glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3) in the treatment of autism spectrum disorder and related syndromes.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex and multifactorial neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by the presence of restricted interests and repetitive behaviors besides deficits in social communication. Syndromic ASD is a subset of ASD caused by underlying genetic disorders, most commonly Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) and Rett Syndrome (RTT). Various mutations and consequent malfunctions in core signaling pathways have been identified in ASD, including glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3). A growing body of evidence suggests a key role of GSK3 dysregulation in the pathogenesis of ASD and its

[Autism spectrum disorder in verbal adults without intellectual disabilities (Asperger syndrome)].

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder associating persistent communication and social interaction deficits with behaviors, interests or activities of a restricted and repetitive nature. The etiology of ASD is not yet fully understood but appears to be multifactorial, including both genetic and environmental factors. The concept of autism underwent a major evolution before arriving at the current definition in DSM-5. The diagnosis has two parts: a categorical from cut-off and differential diagnosis established from a specification of the category by dimensional variabl

Autism Spectrum Disorder Associated With a CACNA1I Variant of Uncertain Significance: A Case Report.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a highly heritable neurodevelopmental condition with multifactorial etiologies, and accumulating evidence suggests that ion channel dysfunction may contribute to a subset of phenotypes. We report a six-year-old Saudi girl with early-onset and persistent deficits in social communication, profound speech impairment, stereotyped behaviors, sensory dysregulation, and significant adaptive and cognitive delays. Standardized assessments demonstrated moderate global delay (Vineland composite score 42), clinically significant social communication impairment (SRS-2 tota

[Empirically based early intervention programs for children with autistic disorders - a selective literature review].

Autistic Disorders (AD) are characterized by impairments in social interaction and communication, as well as by stereotyped behaviors and interests. Early intervention programs in AD aim to improve several aspects of the child's abilities: joint attention, play abilities, language development, and especially social interaction and communication. In this review article based on a selective literature search, the relatively best empirically based early intervention programs will be discussed with a focus on the proven efficacy of these interventions.

Neuroligins Nlg2 and Nlg4 Affect Social Behavior in Drosophila melanogaster.

The genome of Drosophila melanogaster includes homologs to approximately one-third of the currently known human disease genes. Flies and humans share many biological processes, including the principles of information processing by excitable neurons, synaptic transmission, and the chemical signals involved in intercellular communication. Studies on the molecular and behavioral impact of genetic risk factors of human neuro-developmental disorders [autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, and Tourette syndrome] increasingly use the well-studied s
