Honey bee genetics shape the strain-level structure of gut microbiota in social transmission.

BACKGROUND: Honey bee gut microbiota transmitted via social interactions are beneficial to the host health. Although the microbial community is relatively stable, individual variations and high strain-level diversity have been detected across honey bees. Although the bee gut microbiota structure is influenced by environmental factors, the heritability of the gut members and the contribution of the host genetics remains elusive. Considering bees within a colony are not readily genetically identical due to the polyandry of the queen, we hypothesize that the microbiota structure can be shaped by

Genetic contribution to 'theory of mind' in adolescence.

Difficulties in 'theory of mind' (the ability to attribute mental states to oneself or others, and to make predictions about another's behaviour based on these attributions) have been observed in several psychiatric conditions. We investigate the genetic architecture of theory of mind in 4,577 13-year-olds who completed the Emotional Triangles Task (Triangles Task), a first-order test of theory of mind. We observe a small but significant female-advantage on the Triangles Task (Cohen's d = 0.19, P < 0.01), in keeping with previous work using other tests of theory of mind. Genome-wide associatio

New technologies provide insights into genetic basis of psychiatric disorders and explain their co-morbidity.

The completion of Human Genome Project and the "HapMap" project was followed by translational activities from companies within the private sector. This led to the introduction of genome-wide scans based on hundreds of thousands of single nucleotide polymorphysms (SNP). These scans were based on common genetic variants in human populations. This new and powerful technology was then applied to the existing DNA-based datasets with information on psychiatric disorders. As a result, an unprecedented amount of novel scientific insights related to the underlying biology and genetics of psychiatric di

Evolutionarily entrenched odorant receptors for (E)-β-farnesene signaling in Aphidinae aphids.

Alarm pheromones are crucial for the survival of social insects, enabling coordinated escape from predators. Their evolution has co-evolved with the development of olfactory recognition systems, suggesting specific molecular mechanisms underlie this adaptive relationship. We analyzed alarm pheromone compositions across 36 aphid species and found that EBF serves as the sole or primary alarm signal in the Aphidinae subfamily. Genomic annotation of 13 aphid species identified eight conserved, Aphidinae-specific odorant receptor (OR) clades under strong purifying selection. Three receptors-OR5, OR

Autism-related traits in myotonic dystrophy type 1 model mice are due to MBNL sequestration and RNA mis-splicing of autism-risk genes.

Genome-wide enrichment of gene-specific tandem repeat expansions has been linked to autism spectrum disorder. One such mutation is the CTG tandem repeat expansion in the 3' untranslated region of the DMPK gene, which is known to cause myotonic muscular dystrophy type 1. Although there is a clear clinical association between autism and myotonic dystrophy, the molecular basis for this connection remains unknown. Here, we report that sequestration of MBNL splicing factors by mutant DMPK RNAs with expanded CUG repeats alters the RNA splicing patterns of autism-risk genes during brain development,

A Comprehensive Yogic Breathing Program: Evidence for Use in Medicine.

Mind-body interplay in the maintenance of health and the development of disease is important. With the escalating pace of life, increasing demands in ever-changing chaotic surroundings, and practices that help us revive within this mind-body complex are even more relevant today for preserving good health. One such commonly available practice is the Sudarshan Kriya Yoga (SKY), which is now widely available in over 180 countries. During COVID and in the post-COVID era, it has been administered online, making it more accessible. There is mounting evidence of the benefits of SKY in various body sy

Reemergence of Yellow Fever, Magdalena Valley, Colombia, 2024-2025.

Yellow fever, a zoonotic arboviral disease, has reemerged in Colombia, triggering a major outbreak in the country. During 2024 through mid-2025, a total of 132 human cases and 68 infections in nonhuman primates were confirmed, primarily in the department of Tolima, historically considered a low-risk area. We analyzed the historical and current epidemiology of yellow fever in Colombia, highlighting ecologic, social, and surveillance factors that contributed to the outbreak. Low vaccination coverage, insufficient epizootic and entomological surveillance, deforestation, habitat fragmentation, and

Molecular Mechanisms of Drug Resistance in Leishmania spp.

The protozoan parasite Leishmania causes leishmaniasis, a neglected tropical disease, that disproportionately affects underdeveloped countries. This disease has major health, economic, and social implications, particularly because of the limited treatment options, high cost, the severe side effects associated with available therapeutics, and the high rate of treatment failure caused by the parasites' growing resistance to current medications. In this review, we describe first the common strategies used by pathogens to develop drug resistance and then focus on the arsenal of available drugs to

Flavonoids and Polyphenolic Compounds as Potential Talented Agents for the Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease and their Antioxidant Activities.

Aging is a normal human cycle and the most important risk factor for neurodegenerative diseases. Alternations in cells due to aging contribute to loss of the nutrient-sensing, cell function, increased oxidative stress, loss of the homeostasis cell, genomic instability, the build-up of malfunctioning proteins, weakened cellular defenses, and a telomere split. Disturbance of these essential cellular processes in neuronal cells can lead to life threats including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Huntington's disease (HD), Lewy's disease, etc. The most common cause of death in the elderly population is AD

Closing Critical Gaps in the 2026 Bundibugyo Ebola Response: Five Actionable Priorities.

The 2026 Bundibugyo virus disease (BDBV) outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and adjacent Uganda has revealed major deficiencies in outbreak response. The available diagnostics, vaccines, and therapies were primarily designed against Zaire Ebola virus - leaving us ill-prepared for BDBV detection and control. We call for five immediate actions to strengthen existing efforts. First, rapidly establish a decentralized three-tier molecular diagnostic network to allow timely detection and genomic surveillance. Second, since there are few approved treatments that target BDBV specifically

PERIGENOMED-CLINICS 1-the first study on feasibility, acceptability and psychosocial impact of PERIGENOMED: a pilot project aimed at providing initial concrete evidence on the relevance of panel-based genome sequencing for newborn screening (NBS) in France.

INTRODUCTION: International pilot projects focusing on next-generation sequencing in newborn screening (NBS), that is, genomic NBS (gNBS), have been established thanks to continuous therapeutic progress and the massive development of new genetic technologies with rapidly decreasing costs. Given the highly encouraging results of the French SeDeN project regarding anticipated acceptability among professionals and parents, it is now appropriate to launch a similar pilot project in France, in collaboration with other international initiatives under the International Consortium on Newborn Sequencin

BRCA1 haploinsufficiency impairs iron metabolism to promote chrysotile-induced mesothelioma via ferroptosis resistance.

Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is still a social burden associated with asbestos exposure. Local iron accumulation thereby represents the major pathogenesis, followed by oxidative DNA strand breaks and genomic alterations in the mesothelium. BRCA1 is a critical component of homologous recombination repair directed to DNA double-stranded breaks, whereas BRCA1 germline mutation is an established risk for breast/ovarian cancer, its role in MM development remains to be elucidated. Murine Brca1 mutant models so far have not reproduced human phenotypes. However, a rat Brca1 mutant model (Mut; L63X/+ )

Protocol for a randomized controlled trial of the Enhanced Smoking Cessation Approach to Promote Empowerment (ESCAPE) digitalized intervention to promote lung health in high-risk individuals who smoke.

Low dose computed tomography (LDCT) is an effective screening test to decrease lung cancer deaths. Lung cancer screening may be a teachable moment helping people who smoke to quit, which may result in increased benefit of screening. Innovative strategies are needed to engage high-risk individuals in learning about LDCT screening. More precise methods such as polygenic risk scores quantify genetic predisposition to tobacco use, and optimize lung health interventions. We present the ESCAPE (Enhanced Smoking Cessation Approach to Promote Empowerment) protocol. This study will test a smoking cessa

Melioidosis in the remote Katherine region of northern Australia.

Melioidosis is endemic in the remote Katherine region of northern Australia. In a population with high rates of chronic disease, social inequities, and extreme remoteness, the impact of melioidosis is exacerbated by severe weather events and disproportionately affects First Nations Australians. All culture-confirmed melioidosis cases in the Katherine region of the Australian Top End between 1989-2021 were included in the study, and the clinical features and epidemiology were described. The diversity of Burkholderia pseudomallei strains in the region was investigated using genomic sequencing. F

Ancient Yersinia pestis and Salmonella enterica genomes from Bronze Age Crete.

During the late 3rd millennium BCE, the Eastern Mediterranean and Near East witnessed societal changes in many regions, which are usually explained with a combination of social and climatic factors.1-4 However, recent archaeogenetic research forces us to rethink models regarding the role of infectious diseases in past societal trajectories.5 The plague bacterium Yersinia pestis, which was involved in some of the most destructive historical pandemics,5-8 circulated across Eurasia at least from the onset of the 3rd millennium BCE,9-13 but the challenging preservation of ancient DNA in warmer cli

The Role of Genetic Ancestry as a Risk Factor for Primary Open-angle Glaucoma in African Americans.

PURPOSE: POAG is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in African Americans. In this study, we quantitatively assess the association of autosomal ancestry with POAG risk in a large cohort of self-identified African Americans. METHODS: Subjects recruited to the Primary Open-Angle African American Glaucoma Genetics (POAAGG) study were classified as glaucoma cases or controls by fellowship-trained glaucoma specialists. POAAGG subjects were genotyped using the MEGA Ex array (discovery cohort, n = 3830; replication cohort, n = 2135). Population structure was interrogated using principal comp

Structure-altering mutations of the SARS-CoV-2 frameshifting RNA element.

With the rapid rate of COVID-19 infections and deaths, treatments and cures besides hand washing, social distancing, masks, isolation, and quarantines are urgently needed. The treatments and vaccines rely on the basic biophysics of the complex viral apparatus. Although proteins are serving as main drug and vaccine targets, therapeutic approaches targeting the 30,000 nucleotide RNA viral genome form important complementary approaches. Indeed, the high conservation of the viral genome, its close evolutionary relationship to other viruses, and the rise of gene editing and RNA-based vaccines all a

Marsupials: Progress and Prospects.

The chapter provides a review of the application of reproductive science to technologies for marsupial conservation and population management and discusses prospects for the future. This includes the status of technologies such as sperm freezing, artificial insemination, and exogenous hormone treatments to stimulate ovarian activity and cycling in the female. Fertility-based population management for introduced pest species and over-abundant native marsupials remain an elusive goal. Immune-contraceptive approaches, despite demonstration of basic effectiveness, have not progressed to field deli

The Need for Speed: Neuroendocrine Regulation of Socially-controlled Sex Change.

Socially-controlled functional sex change in fishes is a dramatic example of adaptive reproductive plasticity. Functional gonadal sex change can occur within a week while behavioral sex change can begin within minutes. Significant progress has been made in understanding the neuroendocrine bases of this phenomenon at both the gonadal and the neurobiological levels, but a detailed mechanistic understanding remains elusive. We are working with sex-changing wrasses to identify evolutionarily-conserved neuroendocrine pathways underlying this reproductive adaptation. One key model is the bluehead wr
