The effects of perceived daily social and academic failure experiences on school-age children's subsequent interactions with parents.

The hypothesis that perceived failure experiences at school would increase the likelihood of aversive parent-child interactions after school was supported in a study of 167 fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. Children completed measures of mood, school events, and parent-child interaction 3 times each day for 2 consecutive days. Reports of social and academic failure experiences at school (e.g., peer problems and difficulty with schoolwork) were associated with increases in child self-reports of demanding and aversive behavior toward parents that evening. There was no evidence of the reverse eff

Social interaction and functional status among community-dwelling older adults in Japan: a longitudinal study during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have shown that social relationships positively contribute to functional status. However, studies comparing the influence under changing social circumstances are still limited. Consequently, this study investigated how social interaction influenced long-term functional status among older Japanese adults before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A two-wave longitudinal cohort design was used to compare pre-pandemic (2017-2020) and post-pandemic (2020-2023) cohorts. Data were obtained from the Community Empowerment and Care study in T-Village, Aichi Prefec…

The Mediating Role of Resilience in the Association Between Social Interaction Anxiety and Self-Esteem Among Nursing Students in Clinical Settings.

Background: Although social interaction anxiety, resilience, and self-esteem have each been investigated among nursing students, limited research has examined whether resilience contributes to the association between social interaction anxiety and self-esteem through an indirect pathway during clinical practice. Addressing this gap may improve the understanding of the psychological factors associated with students' adaptation in clinical settings. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the relationships among social interaction anxiety, resilience, and self-esteem and the indirect role of resi…

SALSA (Health, Nutrition and Sociability): Community networks for healthy eating, autonomy, and social interaction: Study protocol for a clinical randomized trial.

Loneliness is a highly relevant social determinant of health associated with depression, anxiety, reduced quality of life, malnutrition, cognitive decline, and increased morbidity and mortality. Social prescribing initiatives that connect individuals with community-based activities show potential to improve emotional and social wellbeing, although evidence, particularly regarding shared-meal programs, remains limited and inconsistent. This study aims to evaluate a community-based intervention consisting of group meals in restaurants, complemented by monthly healthy eating workshops, to improve

The interaction between candidate SNPs and social factors significantly influences the prevalence of alcohol use disorder in Chinese young male adults.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a growing public health issue which has caused global concern. Previous evidence has identified several genes significantly associated with alcohol-related traits. However, it remains unclear whether these associations are robust across different ethnic groups and whether they may be moderated by some specific social factors. The current study aimed to investigate the associations between candidate SNPs and AUD and to examine whether the associations could be moderated by socioeconomic status and social environment among a cohort of young Chinese males. A cross-se

Case Report: Low-intensity transcranial focused ultrasound stimulation improves social interaction and stereotyped behavior in a boy with autism spectrum disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Presently, no biomedical therapies are available that specifically address the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorders. Given the evidence of cortical malfunction in ASD, low-intensity transcranial focused ultrasound stimulation has been discussed as a prospective therapeutic technique. METHODS: We describe the application of transcranial focused ultrasound to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in a boy with ASD, which was applied for 30 minutes each consecutive weekday for four weeks (20 sessions in total). Social interaction, stereotyped behavior and language were assess…

SEX-SPECIFIC IMPACTS OF EARLY LIFE SLEEP DISRUPTION: ETHANOL SEEKING, SOCIAL INTERACTION, AND ANXIETY ARE DIFFERENTIALLY ALTERED IN ADOLESCENT PRAIRIE VOLES.

Early life sleep is important for neuronal development and maturation. Using the highly social prairie vole rodent model, we have previously … sized that anxiety and reward related behaviors, as measured by light/dark box, 2-bottle choice and social interactions, would be negatively impacted by ELSD in adolescent male and female prairie voles. Male ELSD voles were no different from control voles in measures of anxiety and ethanol preference or consumption, but affiliative social interactions were significa …

Sex-Specific Impacts of Early Life Sleep Disruption: Ethanol Seeking, Social Interaction, and Anxiety Are Differentially Altered in Adolescent Prairie Voles.

Early life sleep is important for neuronal development. Using the highly social prairie vole rodent model, we have previously reported that early life sleep disruption (ELSD) during the preweaning period results in interference with social bonding and increases ethanol consumption following a stressor in adulthood. Furthermore, ELSD increases parvalbumin expression and reduces glutamatergic neurotransmission in cortical regions in adult prairie voles. To understand the impact of ELSD on the lifespan, an examination of an earlier time in life is necessary. The aim of the present study was to ex

Decreased inter-brain synchronization in the right middle frontal cortex in alcohol use disorder during social interaction: An fNIRS hyperscanning study.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a widespread mental disorder and has thrust a heavy burden on the health system all over the world. Social cognition and function are reported to be impaired in AUD, but its neural mechanism is rarely investigated. The current study attempts to fill this gap. METHODS: 28 subjects with AUD and 36 healthy controls (HC) were recruited in this study and were paired into 14 AUD dyads and 18 HC dyads. The drinking problems, depression, anxiety, and impulsivity of subjects were measured. Each dyad completed cooperation and competition tasks with simultaneous

Social Interaction, Survival Stress and Smoking Behavior of Migrant Workers in China-An Empirical Analysis Using CHARLS Data from 2013-2018.

Smoking is a major public health problem in most countries and usually occurs in marginalized groups. Analyzing the smoking behavior of migrant workers, a marginalized group in China, is of practical significance. Using panel data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) database from 2013 to 2018, this study examined influence factors of smoking behavior (whether to smoke and smoking frequency) among migrant workers in China through the Heckman two-stage model. The results showed that the smoking rates of migrant workers were positively associated with social activity

Investigating the interaction between neuropsychiatry features and daily activities on social function in patients with Parkinson's disease with mild cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: Social functioning is crucial for daily living and is an essential indicator of dementia in patients with Parkinson's disease. The pattern of social functioning in patients with Parkinson's disease without dementia (i.e. those who are cognitively intact or have mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI)) and its determinants are unclear. AIMS: In exploring the heterogeneity of social functioning among patients with Parkinson's disease-associated dementia, we determined the optimal cut-off score of the Parkinson's Disease Social Functioning Scale (PDSFS) for patients with PD-MCI, and the v

The selective 5-HT6 receptor antagonist SLV has putative cognitive- and social interaction enhancing properties in rodent models of cognitive impairment.

In the present study, our aim was to investigate whether the novel highly selective 5-hydroxytryptamine6 (5-HT6) receptor antagonist SLV can ameliorate impairments in cognition and social interaction with potential relevance for both schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease (AD). SLV sub-chronically - treated Wistar rats reared in isolation showed significantly enhanced prepulse inhibition (PPI) and object recognition performance when compared to vehicle - treated rats. In the isolated rats, also a significant reduction in expression of hippocampal neural cell adhesion molecule polysialylation (N…

Group housing increases alertness and social interaction compared to traditional single stabling in two-year-old sport horse stallions during pretraining.

Horses in training are often stabled individually, but this is increasingly questioned. We have investigated the effects of different stabling systems in Warmblood stallions during a 12-week pretraining programme. Stallions were 24 months old and housed either in a group stable (Group 24, n = 9) or in individual boxes (Box 24, n = 10), or they were 30 months of age and housed in individual boxes (Box 30, n = 10). Cortisol, heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), body development, injuries and selected behaviour patterns were analysed (1) at transfer from pasture to stable and (2) thereafter,

Advanced smart assistance with enhancing social interaction and daily activities for visually impaired individuals using deep learning with modified seagull optimization.

Visually impaired individuals face daily challenges in social engagement and routine activities due to limited access to real-time environmental information. Damage detection is a common approach in infrastructure that combines steel and concrete reinforcement to achieve optimal durability and structural strength. These bridges, designed to withstand diverse loads such as seismic forces, traffic weight, and environmental factors, are significant for maintaining structural integrity. Damage detection comprises applying advanced structural health monitoring methods to identify and assess potenti

Measuring and supporting language function for children with autism: evidence from a randomized control trial of a social-interaction-based therapy.

In a report of the effectiveness of MEHRIT, a social-interaction-based intervention for autism, Casenhiser et al. (Autism 17(2):220-241, 2013) failed to find a significant advantage for language development in the treatment group using standardized language assessments. We present the results from a re-analysis of their results to illustrate the importance of measuring communicative language acts (formally called "speech acts"). Reanalysis confirmed that children in the MEHRIT group outperformed the community treatment group on measures of MLUm, number of utterances produced, and various speec

Working through emotions: Sadness predicts social engagement and physiologic linkage for men and disengagement for women in dyadic interactions.

We investigated whether sadness leaves an "emotional residue" by inducing sadness in one individual and testing its transfer to an unaware new acquaintance. Participants (N = 230; 115 dyads) completed cooperative tasks in same-gender dyads. Before meeting, participants recalled a personal event. In half the dyads, one participant (sad actor) recalled a sad event, while their partner (sad-paired partner) recalled a neutral event. In control dyads, both participants recalled neutral events. We examined self-reported emotions, affective language, behavior, and measures of sympathetic arousal to c
