Predictors of social risk for post-ischemic stroke reintegration.

After stroke rehabilitation, patients need to reintegrate back into their daily life, workplace and society. Reintegration involves complex processes depending on age, sex, stroke severity, cognitive, physical, as well as socioeconomic factors that impact long-term outcomes post-stroke. Moreover, post-stroke quality of life can be impacted by social risks of inadequate family, social, economic, housing and other supports needed by the patients. Social risks and barriers to successful reintegration are poorly understood yet critical for informing clinical or social interventions. Therefore, the

An Explanatory Model for Rehabilitation Adherence in Patients With Stroke Based on the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation and Behaviour Model.

AIMS: To develop a rehabilitation adherence model for patients with stroke based on the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation and Behaviour (COM-B) model; verify the model; and identify the direct and indirect effects of each variable on rehabilitation adherence. DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional, correlational study using structural equation modelling. METHODS: Participants were 212 patients aged 23-89 (69.8% men) visiting the neurology outpatient clinic of a tertiary hospital in Seoul, Republic of Korea, between 3 months and 1 year after stroke onset. Data were collected from September 25,

Interventions to address social and structural conditions for individuals with select complex, chronic, disabling conditions: a scoping review protocol.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the review is to describe features of interventions that address social and structural conditions for individuals with select complex, chronic conditions: multiple sclerosis (MS), inflammatory arthritis, diabetes, or frailty. INTRODUCTION: Despite advances in health care over the past 30 years, substantial heterogeneity in health outcomes persists across people with complex, chronic conditions. Social and structural conditions affect this heterogeneity and contribute to social vulnerability, marginalization and equity-seeking status. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: We will

The health disparities research industrial complex as structural violence: insights from the U.S. South.

The U.S. South experiences some of the most severe and persistent health inequities in the nation, shaped by a long history of racialized structural violence in housing, healthcare, education, and the criminal legal system. At the same time, the region remains a critical site of resistance, rooted in deep traditions of community organizing that have reshaped national understandings of social injustice. Against this backdrop, the Partnership for Southern Equity launched its Community-Informed Research for Change, Learning, and Equity (CIRCLE) initiative to address an enduring and underexamined

Turning Structures Into Attributes: The Marginalisation of Critical Theory in Research on Social Determinants of Health.

Critical theory has provided important resources for understanding the social determinants of health (SDOH). Yet less is known about what happens to these explanatory resources as SDOH becomes increasingly institutionalised in research and policy. We examine this question through a scoping review of 298 peer-reviewed SDOH reviews published between 2005 and 2025, together with a close analysis of the 15 reviews with the highest annualised Web of Science citation rates. The findings show a pronounced and widening discursive asymmetry: mainstream, technically oriented reviews dominate the literat

From exposure to embedding: how interconnected social determinants drive health inequalities-a complex adaptive system dynamics approach.

The social determinants of health (SDOH)-including socioeconomic position, education, housing, and social networks-are fundamental drivers of health inequalities worldwide. These inequalities persist because social determinants interact dynamically across time and context, with health emerging from the interplay of social, political, environmental, and biological processes in which determinants act simultaneously as causes and consequences. Early-life exposures and historical conditions produce enduring physiological vulnerability through biological embedding, encompassing stress dysregulation

Health gap closing function of a green behavioral activity system from the perspective of economic and social capital: A case study of sports governance and operation systems.

Improving sports governance and operation systems can enable groups with low levels of economic and social capital to obtain greater health benefits, thus narrowing the health benefit gap compared to those with high levels of capital and realizing the sustainable development of sports. This study aims to advance the research on the interactive effects of sports governance and its operation system, economic and social capital and individual health. To explore the moderating effect of sports governance and its operation system on the relationship between the level of economic and social capital

Insight in schizophrenia is associated with psychoeducation and social support: Testing a new more comprehensive insight tool in Turkish schizophrenia patients.

Insight is a continuous and multidimensional phenomenon, including awareness of having an illness, the presence of symptoms and accurate symptom attribution, the need for treatment, and the consequences of treatment. Good insight into illness is associated with better adherence to treatment, better cognitive, psychosocial, and vocational functioning along with less symptom severity, decreased relapses, and hospitalizations. Several tools are used for insight evaluation. We recruited 90 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia and analyzed the forms of 58 patients. The patients completed the VAGUS

Non-Spousal Support, Marital Status, and Mortality Risk.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the association between non-spousal support and mortality risk differs by marital status. METHODS: Using data from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (N = 2460), we estimate a series of logistic regression models to assess how non-spousal support moderates the relationship between marital status and mortality across a 5-year period. RESULTS: Never married respondents who had minimal perceived access to non-spousal support had a greater probability of death compared to married respondents with similar levels of non-spousal support. The dispar

[Poverty, social exclusion, social capital and health].

Social capital is the social structure which facilitates the actions of individuals, stimulates production and allows for success. Poverty maintains basic needs unmet (food, health, autonomy) over time and unvoluntarily. Social exclusion does not allow individuals to participate in society. The following dimensions are assessed: financial poverty, social inclusion, employment, health and education. Social participation, work integration, empowerment, self-esteem, and personal achievement should be promoted. In Europe 15% of people is exposed to poverty; in Spain corresponding figures are 13.4%

Social networks, social participation, and health among youth living in extreme poverty in rural Malawi.

Extensive research documents that social network characteristics affect health, but knowledge of peer networks of youth in Malawi and sub-Saharan Africa is limited. We examine the networks and social participation of youth living in extreme poverty in rural Malawi, using in-depth interviews with 32 youth and caregivers. We describe youth's peer networks and assess how gender and the context of extreme poverty influence their networks and participation, and how their networks influence health. In-school youth had larger, more interactive, and more supportive networks than out-of-school youth, a

Social anxiety and disinhibition: an analysis of curiosity and social rank appraisals, approach-avoidance conflicts, and disruptive risk-taking behavior.

We examined how social anxiety is related to appraisals for various disinhibited behaviors and sought to identify potential subgroups of socially anxious people. College students completed trait measures and appraised disinhibited behaviors on their potential for threat, opportunity to satisfy curiosity, and ability to enhance social status. Three months later, participants were asked to report on their frequency of disinhibited behaviors since the initial assessment. People with greater social anxiety demonstrated frequent approach-avoidance conflicts - co-existing recognition of threats and …

Care provision and social participation among older adults in Europe: longitudinal evidence from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing.

Providing care to family members and friends in older age is common, but it can impact the carers' time and energy for social participation. This study explores the relationship between care and social participation in 16 European countries, considering factors like care status, care frequency, relationship to the care recipient, gender, socioeconomic status, and country care regimes. The study utilised pooled data from the Survey of Health Ageing and Retirement in Europe and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Multiple regression models assessed the association between care status (non-

Association of cumulative social risk and gestational diabetes mellitus in the US, 2007-2018.

AIMS: Little is known regarding the association of multiple social risk factors and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). METHODS: We analyzed the 2007-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys including 10,439 women aged ≥20 years (8 % with history of GDM). We created a cumulative social risk score (CSR) by adding scores assigned to each of the following: race/ethnicity, citizenship status and country of birth, education, and family income (score of 0 used as reference group). Using logistic regression, we assessed the associations of individual social risk factors (education, in

Socioeconomic status and obesity.

Two recent developments have thrown into bold relief the importance of environmental forces in determining the prevalence of human obesity. The first is genetic studies that estimate the heritability of human obesity at no more than 33%. The second is the 33% increase in the prevalence of obesity in the USA during the past decade. The importance of the environment in influencing obesity is matched only by the extent of our ignorance of how it exerts its effects and of how we may favourably alter them. The most thoroughly studied measure of environmental influences is socioeconomic status. Amon

Social competence as a predictor of adult outcomes in autism spectrum disorder.

There is a wealth of literature characterizing social difficulties in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, little work has replicated longitudinal findings from typical development that adolescent social competence predicts positive adult outcomes in ASD. The current study examined social competence trajectories from 2 to 26 and the utility of three social competence measures collected in adolescence in predicting work, residential status, friendship, and romantic outcomes in a longitudinal cohort (n = 253) of ASD. Using group-based trajectory modeling, we identified two patterns of social
