The structure of classes in Uruguay, 1963-1996: a structural-historical perspective.

This paper focuses on selected analytical aspects of social mobility from a structural-historical perspective, which provide important inputs for our broader research on intergenerational individual social mobility in Uruguay. We present the results of a structural-historical analysis of social classes in Uruguay during the second half of the twentieth century, based on census data on the Economically Active Population (EAP) from 1963, 1975, 1985, and 1996. Social classes are classified using Torrado's scheme and harmonized with the structural perspective proposed by Filgueira and Geneletti (F

Social networks and vaccination: a perspective on the essential role of social networks to improve vaccination outcomes in public health.

Vaccines protect against life-threatening diseases and save millions of lives each year in people of all ages, but vaccination rates remain suboptimal and inequitable. Social networks, in which individuals are linked, offer capacity to transmit infectious diseases and protection against them by the diffusion of vaccination behavior. However, social networks are underutilized in public health strategies. This perspective paper advances a network-informed framework that reconceptualizes vaccination behavior as socially embedded. We integrate behavioral drivers with network processes, such as soc

Social capital predicts corruption risk in towns.

Corruption is a social plague: gains accrue to small groups, while its costs are borne by everyone. Significant variation in its level between and within countries suggests a relationship between social structure and the prevalence of corruption, yet, large-scale empirical studies thereof have been missing due to lack of data. In this paper, we relate the structural characteristics of social capital of settlements with corruption in their local governments. Using datasets from Hungary, we quantify corruption risk by suppressed competition and lack of transparency in the settlement's awarded pu…

Replay shapes abstract cognitive maps for efficient social navigation.

To make adaptive social decisions, people must anticipate how information flows through their social network. While this requires knowledge of how people are connected, networks are too large to have first-hand experience with every possible route between individuals. How, then, are people able to accurately track information flow through social networks? Here we find that people immediately cache abstract knowledge about social network structure as they learn who is friends with whom, which enables the identification of efficient routes between remotely connected individuals. These cognitive

Adaptation and psychometric evaluation of the revised social constraints scale for partners of adults with cancer.

BACKGROUND: Partners of adults with cancer often experience social constraints that limit their ability to express cancer-related thoughts, feelings, and concerns to their loved ones. However, no validated instrument is currently available in Simplified Chinese to assess partner-specific social constraints. This study aimed to culturally adapt and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Simplified Chinese version of the Social Constraints Scale for partners of adults with cancer (SC-SCS-P). METHODS: The scale was developed using a two-phase approach. In the first phase, items from the exi

Personality as a Social Process: where Peter Giordano Meets Boris Parygin.

In this paper I comment on the "Individual personality is best understood as process, not structure: A Confucian-inspired perspective" article by Peter Giordano (Culture & Psychology, 23(4), 502-518 (2017)), which addresses the question of how to comprehend a personality which is continuously changing and varying with changes in social contexts and situations. The issue which Giordano turns up I believe to be of great importance and topicality in the quickly changing globalizing contemporary world. Giordano's paper highlights an important problem in the development of contemporary personality

Confirmatory factor analysis of the Adult Asperger Assessment: the association of symptom domains within a clinical population.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a behaviourally defined disorder characterised by impairments in three domains of social interaction, communication, and repetitive, stereotyped behaviours and activities. Proposed changes to diagnostic criteria suggest that the diagnostic triad may no longer fit as the best way to conceptualise ASD, and that social and communication impairments should be considered as a single domain. The aim of this study was to examine the structure of symptom domains within the Adult Asperger Assessment (AAA; Baron-Cohen, Wheelwright, Robinson, & Woodbury-Smith, 2005), a d

Longitudinal Examination of Stress and Depression in Older Adults Over a 2-Year Period: Moderation Effect of Varied Social Support Measures.

Depressive symptoms and stress exposure fluctuate over time in community-dwelling older adults, but they are frequently assessed using one-time retrospective self-report measures. Social support viewed as a multifaceted construct can play diverse moderating roles in this association although it is typically gauged through the measure of perceived social support. This study aims to explore the relationships between stress, social support, and depressive symptoms among older adults by utilizing the longitudinal data collected through a smartphone application and supplemented by annual face-to-fa

Family structure and health, how companionship acts as a buffer against ill health.

BACKGROUND: Health and well-being are the result of synergistic interactions among a variety of determinants. Family structure and composition are social determinants that may also affect health behaviours and outcomes. This study was performed to examine the associations between family structure and health and to determine the protective effects of support mechanisms to improve quality of health outcome. METHODS: Six hundred people, selected by multistage sampling to obtain a representative population of men and women aged 20-60 living in communities in Japan, were included in this study. Da

Social capital and mental health: a comparative analysis of four low income countries.

Women and the poor are disproportionately affected by common mental disorders (CMD), and women in low income countries are particularly at risk. Social capital may explain some of the geographical variation in CMD, but the association between social capital and CMD in low income countries has rarely been studied. This paper aims to explore the relationship between individual and ecological measures of social capital and maternal CMD in four low income countries. Cross-sectional data from the Young Lives (YL) study with information across 234 communities in Peru, Ethiopia, Vietnam and Andhra Pr

Within-person networks of clinical features of social anxiety disorder during cognitive and interpersonal therapy.

Analysis of longitudinal within-person networks over the course of therapy allows an identification of possible targets of treatment. This study examined within-person networks of clinical features in social anxiety disorder (SAD) patients during cognitive (CT) and interpersonal (IPT) therapy. Patients (n = 80) were randomized to either CT or IPT in a 10 week residential program. They completed a measure of clinical features two times a week. The 60 (75 %) patients who had completed at least 18 measurements were included in the analyses. The multilevel vector autoregressive (mlVAR) model was u

Association of social skills with psychological distress among female nurses in Japan.

Nursing is a highly stressful occupation. Because nursing work involves interaction with patients and colleagues, competence in social skills may be a key issue in stress management among nurses. However, there are very few studies among nurses focused on social skills together with social support, both of which are important aspects of job stress. The aim of this study was to examine the interrelationships between social skills and social support with job stressors, problem-solving coping, and psychological distress among Japanese nurses. Data from a self-administered questionnaire of 1,197 f

Do perceived social neighborhood factors explain the association between neighborhood age composition and mental health among Dutch older adults?

BACKGROUND: In the light of urbanization and aging, a crucially relevant policy question is how to shape neighborhoods to foster healthy aging. An important debate is whether older adults should group in neighborhoods, or whether a more mixed neighborhood age composition is more beneficial to health and well-being. We therefore assessed the association between neighborhood age structure and mental health and the mediating role of individual perceptions of neighborhood social factors. METHODS: We conducted multivariable linear regression models and causal mediation analyses in 1255 older adult

Contributions from popular education in health to structural competency training: An experience from Chile.

Structural competency is used to train health professionals on how social, political, and economic dynamics create conditions that negatively impact a population's health. In the Global South, this approach has historical roots in social movements, popular education, social medicine, and human rights. In 1982, during a time of extreme poverty, inequality, and violence under the Chilean military dictatorship, Educación Popular en Salud (EPES), developed a programme for training community health promoters to address common illnesses and analyse the underlying causes of poor health. In 2010, EPES

[A role of long-term social interactions in the control of spermatogenesis in male mice of inbred strains PT and CBA/Lac].

Social hierarchy in the animal community is a structure of behavior relations when members of a social group vary in their ability to acquire resources in the presence of others. The aim of our study was to investigate social dominance effects on development of the reproduction function in male mice. Sperm quality, relative testis and epididymis weights were evaluated in male mice of PT and CBA/Lac inbred strains at 70 day of age after pairing throughout the 32 day period. The effect of social dominance on sperm quality was observed only in males of the CBA/Lac strain. The dominant males had h

Knowledge, training qualification and experiences of oncology social work services among generic medical social workers in Malaysia: a path toward enhancing support for cancer patients.

Oncology social work services are integral to healthcare systems in many developed nations, particularly in light of the rising global incidence of cancer. This paper aims to assess the knowledge, training and experiences of medical social work officers working in government health facilities in Malaysia. The empirical data presented in this study originates from research conducted in 2022, utilizing an explanatory sequential design and critical descriptive analysis. A diverse range of methods was employed for primary data collection, including a self-report survey with a structured questionna

[The Prevalence of Sexually Transmitted Infections Depending on Social Belonging of Population].

The sexually transmitted infections represent an actual medical social problem. The purpose of study is to analyze characteristics of their prevalence in various social groups of population. The data from annual reports on morbidity in the Republic of Udmurtia in 2006-2015 is analyzed. The analysis of morbidity of sexually transmitted infections during the mentioned period demonstrated the highest morbidity of chlamydia infection (from 135 in 2006 to 194,8 in 2015 per 100 000 of population) and trichomoniasis (from 63.5 in 2006 to 183.4 in 2015 per 100 000 of population). SPINning factors: factor analytic evaluation of the Social Phobia Inventory in clinical and nonclinical undergraduate samples.

The Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN) was designed to assess three dimensions of social anxiety (i.e., fear, avoidance, and physiological arousal) as posited by the scale authors (Connor et al., 2000). Despite expectations of a 3-factor solution, analyses of the SPIN to date have provided support for 3- and 5-factor solutions (Radomsky et al., 2006). Moreover, a 3-item version, the Mini-SPIN (Connor et al., 2001), has good sensitivity and specificity for generalized social anxiety disorder (SAD), implying some item redundancy. Another recent psychometric analysis of the SPIN was performed in a di

Unemployment and mental health: Evidence of effect heterogeneity by social class in the UK.

The causal effect of unemployment on mental health is well-documented, yet a given job loss episode likely does not harm everyone uniformly. Who is hurt, and how deeply, is contingent on an individual's position in the stratification structure, a dimension that has received little attention compared to gender and age. Drawing on Fundamental Cause Theory, we argue that social class shapes both exposure and vulnerability to unemployment and hypothesise a social gradient whereby the salariat is buffered against the mental health penalties of job loss relative to intermediate and working-class pos

Social support among gender diverse people: Are we measuring what we think we are?

BACKGROUND: To assess social support among gender diverse people, measures normed and validated with cisgender participants are used, most commonly the Multidimensional Scale of Social Support (MSPSS). Despite widespread use, the psychometric properties of the MSPSS have not been systematically investigated among gender diverse people. Thus, it is unclear whether use of the MSPSS is appropriate for this population. METHOD: Using a mixed-method approach (e.g. deductive thematic analysis and confirmatory factor analyses), we explored the factor structure of the MSPSS among gender diverse partic
