Brain growth trajectories in mouse strains with central and peripheral serotonin differences: relevance to autism models.

The genetic heterogeneity of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) suggests that their underlying neurobiology involves dysfunction at the neural network level. Understanding these neural networks will require a major collaborative effort and will depend on validated and widely accepted animal models. Many mouse models have been proposed in autism research, but the assessment of their validity often has been limited to measuring social interactions. However, two other well-replicated findings have been reported in ASDs: transient brain overgrowth in early postnatal life and elevated 5-HT (serotonin

The Social Risk ACTIONS Framework: Characterizing Responses to Social Risks by Health Care Delivery Organizations.

Social risks refer to individuals' social and economic conditions shaped by underlying social determinants of health. Health care delivery organizations increasingly screen patients for social risks given their potential impact on health outcomes. However, it can be challenging to meaningfully address patients' needs. Existing frameworks do not comprehensively describe and classify ways in which health care delivery organizations can address social risks after screening. Addressing this gap, the authors developed the Social Risk ACTIONS framework (Actionability Characteristics To Inform Organi

Positive childhood experiences support emotional and behavioral health in middle childhood: Longitudinal mediation of adverse childhood experiences.

BACKGROUND: Fostering positive childhood experiences (PCEs) is a key prevention strategy, however there is a scarcity of longitudinal studies that explore the role of PCEs with childhood outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the impact of middle childhood PCEs in the presence of earlier adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on indices of behavioral and emotional development. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: 1163 participants from the U.S. Early Head Start Research and Evaluation Project (EHSRE). METHODS: Ten PCEs indicators (PCE-G5) that align with the Health Outcomes from Positive Experiences (

A dyadic perspective on parent and adolescent social media use: the roles of communication, joint technology use, and validation motives in problematic social media use.

BACKGROUND: Parents significantly influence adolescent behavior, yet research often overlooks dyadic interactions in shaping media use. Understanding how family members’ technology habits and communication relate to problematic media use (PMU) is critical for developing effective interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study used actor–partner interdependence modeling (APIM) to examine associations among time on social media, PMU, and three mediators (open communication, joint technology use, and validation motives) within parent–adolescent dyads. METHODS: Participants were 85 parent–adolescent dyads (

Measuring self and informant perspectives of Restricted and Repetitive Behaviours (RRBs): psychometric evaluation of the Repetitive Behaviours Questionnaire-3 (RBQ-3) in adult clinical practice and research settgs.

BACKGROUND: Brief questionnaires that comprehensively capture key restricted and repetitive behaviours (RRBs) across different informants have potential to support autism diagnostic services. We tested the psychometric properties of the 20-item Repetitive Behaviours Questionnaire-3 (RBQ-3), a questionnaire that includes self-report and informant-report versions enabling use across the lifespan. METHOD: In Study 1, adults referred to a specialised adult autism diagnostic service (N = 110) completed the RBQ-3 self-report version, and a relative or long-term friend completed the RBQ-3 informant-

Indirect questioning methods for sensitive survey questions: Modelling criminal behaviours among a prison population.

Information such as the prevalence and frequency of criminal behaviour is difficult to estimate using standard survey techniques because of the tendency of respondents to withhold or misrepresent information. Social desirability bias is a significant threat to the validity of self-reported data, especially when supplied by persons such as sexual offenders or those convicted of theft or substance abuse. The randomized response approach is an alternative to the standard interview method and offers great potential for researchers in the field of criminal justice. By means of a survey of 792 priso

Sexual Self-Schemas in the Real World: Investigating the Ecological Validity of Language-Based Markers of Childhood Sexual Abuse.

This is the first study to examine language use and sexual self-schemas in natural language data extracted from posts to a large online forum. Recently, two studies applied advanced text analysis techniques to examine differences in language use and sexual self-schemas between women with and without a history of childhood sexual abuse. The aim of the current study was to test the ecological validity of the differences in language use and sexual self-schema themes that emerged between these two groups of women in the laboratory. Archival natural language data were extracted from a social media

Long term impact of child abuse in university students.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of research underscores the detrimental impact of child maltreatment on a child's development. Encompassing a wide range of actions by caregivers that significantly impede optimal development and violate societal norms, child maltreatment can manifest in various forms, including neglect of physical, cognitive, emotional, and social needs. Accordingly, this study aimed to describe the self-reported psychological, social, and physical sequelae reported by Egyptian university students with histories of childhood maltreatment. METHODS: Employing a cross-sectional design

A comparison of the effects of reading interventions on engagement and performance for fourth-grade students with learning disabilities.

Inexpensive software applications designed to teach reading, writing, mathematics, and other academic areas have become increasingly popular. Although previous research has demonstrated the potential efficacy of such applications, there is a paucity of research that compares applications instruction (AI) with traditional teacher-directed instruction (TDI), and the relative effectiveness and efficiency of these instructional approaches remains largely unknown. This study used an alternating treatment design to compare academic engagement and outcomes (i.e., word identification and reading fluen

Refinements in the hierarchical structure of externalizing psychiatric disorders: Patterns of lifetime liability from mid-adolescence through early adulthood.

Research on hierarchical modeling of psychopathology has frequently identified 2 higher order latent factors, internalizing and externalizing. When based on the comorbidity of psychiatric diagnoses, the externalizing domain has usually been modeled as a single latent factor. Multivariate studies of externalizing symptom features, however, suggest multidimensionality. To address this apparent contradiction, confirmatory factor analytic methods and information-theoretic criteria were used to evaluate 4 theoretically plausible measurement models based on lifetime comorbidity patterns of 7 putativ

Stages of change in anxiety: psychometric properties of the University of Rhode Island Change Assessment (URICA) scale.

Readiness for change is increasingly cited as an important variable in the health behaviours literature, yet there remains a dearth of research related to this construct in mental health. This study examined the psychometric properties of the University of Rhode Island Change Assessment (URICA) scale in two samples. In Study 1 (n = 252), undergraduates completed the URICA and were administered measures of hopelessness, the consequences of worry, self-esteem, anxious symptomatology, and social desirability. The reliability and validity of the URICA were generally supported, although the goodnes

PURPOSE: To describe the generation and validation of the Lebanese fear of relationship commitment scale (LFRC) and factors associated with FRC in a representative sample of the Lebanese population. DESIGN AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study, conducted between January and May 2018, enrolled 568 single community dwelling participants. RESULTS: The scale items converged over a solution of four factors, explaining 50.46% of the variance (Cronbach's α = 0.789). Higher social phobia (β = 0.073) and higher general trust score (β = 0.393) were associated with higher FRC, whereas higher self-est

Academic Stress and Mental Health Challenges Among International Students in China.

International students in China frequently encounter academic and acculturative challenges that adversely affect their psychological wellbeing. However, limited research has integrated quantitative and qualitative evidence to comprehensively examine the determinants of stress, anxiety, and depression among this population. This study investigated the effects of academic and acculturative stressors on the mental health of international students and explored their coping experiences and perceptions of institutional support. An explanatory sequential mixed-methods technique was employed. Quantita

The latent structure of anxiety symptoms in anxiety disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Research in the psychopathology of panic and anxiety disorders, particularly agoraphobia, suggests that fear of fear may be the basis of these conditions. However, there is little empirical research on the definition and validity of the concept of fear of fear in a clinical study group. The authors' aims are 1) to determine empirically if particular associations between symptoms and beliefs exist in a group of patients with anxiety disorders and what underlying dimensions of perceived threat they represent and 2) to assess the relative importance of these associations in agoraphobia

Development and validation of a semi-structured interview guide to explore patient perspectives on physiotherapy advancements in the management of diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN) is a multifaceted complication characterized by pain, numbness, tingling, gait and balance impairments, and autonomic dysfunction, all of which compromise functional independence and quality of life. Existing quantitative tools, though widely used, often fail to capture the complexity of patients' lived experiences and the nuanced effects of therapeutic interventions. To address this gap, this study aimed to develop and validate a semi-structured interview guide that explores the functional and psychosocial domains most affected in individuals w

Fear of illness & virus evaluation (FIVE) COVID-19 scales for children-parent/caregiver-report development and validation.

OBJECTIVE: Commonly-used youth anxiety measures may not comprehensively capture fears, worries, and experiences related to the pervasive impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study described the development of the Fear of Illness and Virus Evaluation (FIVE) scales and validated the caregiver-report version. METHOD: After initial development, feedback was obtained from clinicians and researchers, who provided suggestions on item content/wording, reviewed edits, and provided support for the updated FIVE's content and face validity. Functional assessment of hikikomori behaviors: Functional types and psycho-behavioral factors.

Hikikomori is a condition of prolonged social withdrawal (at least six months) characterized by not working or attending school, not socializing outside one's home, and staying at home on most days except for solitary outings. Currently, there are no adequate tools for the assessment of individual differences in hikikomori functions. This study involved the development of the Hikikomori Functional Assessment Scale (HFAS), which quantitatively assesses the perceived functions of hikikomori. Three data samples were collected at different time periods and included 490 participants with hikikomori
