Metalliferous and aluminium (Al)-rich soils represent restrictive terrestrial environments where high concentrations of potentially toxic elements act as edaphic filters on plant communities. Since arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis can alleviate several environmental constraints, it may play an important role in plant performance in metalliferous and Al-rich soils. Here, we review current knowledge on the mechanisms and ecological relevance of AM symbiosis in naturally metalliferous and Al-rich ecosystems worldwide. Available evidence indicates that AM fungi (AMF) mitigate both trace metal…

Microorganisms inhabiting hostile Arctic environments express a variety of functional phenotypes, some of clinical interest, such as haemolytic ability and antimicrobial resistance. We studied haemolytic bacterial isolates from Arctic habitats, assessing their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against antimicrobials. We then performed whole genome sequencing and analysed them for features conferring antimicrobial resistance. MIC data showed that Micromonospora spp. belong to 33% non-wild type (NWT) for erythromycin and penicillin and 22% NWT for tetracycline. Both Pseudomonas spp. belong

The soils of the Amazon are complex environments with different organisms cohabiting in continuous adaptation processes; this changes significantly when these environments are modified for the development of agricultural activities that alter the chemical, macro, and microbiological compositions. The metagenomic variations and the levels of the environmental impact of four different soil samples from the Amazon region were evaluated, emphasizing the resistome. Soil samples from the organic phase from the different forest, pasture, and transgenic soybean monocultures of 2-14 years old were coll…

The current research focuses on the adsorption/desorption characteristics of the antibiotics ciprofloxacin (CIP) and trimethoprim (TRI) taking place in 17 agricultural soils, which are studied by means of batch-type experiments. The results show that adsorption was higher for CIP, with Freundlich KF values ranging between 1150 and 5086 Ln µmol1-n kg-1, while they were between 29 and 110 Ln µmol1-n kg-1 in the case of TRI. Other parameters, such as the Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity (qm(ads)), as well as the Kd parameter in the linear model and also the adsorption percentages, follow the …

Nanoparticulate mercury (Hg-NPs) are ubiquitous in nature. However, the lack of data on their concentration in soils impedes reliable risk assessments. This is due to the analytical difficulties resulting from low ambient Hg concentrations and background interferences of heterogeneous soil components. Here, coupled to single particle inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (spICP-MS), a standardized protocol was developed for extraction and quantification of Hg-NPs in natural soils with a wide range of properties. High particle number-, particle mass-, and total mass-based recoveries were…

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease caused by infection with pathogenic leptospires. Consistent with recent studies by other groups, leptospires were isolated from 89 out of 110 (80.9%) soil or water samples from varied locations in the Philippines in our surveillance study, indicating that leptospires might have a life cycle that does not involve animal hosts. However, despite previous work, it has not been confirmed whether leptospires multiply in the soil environment under various experimental conditions. Given the fact that the case number of leptospirosis is increased after flood, we hypo…

Bile acids are surface-active steroid compounds with a C5 carboxylic side chain at the steroid nucleus. They are produced by vertebrates, mainly functioning as emulsifiers for lipophilic nutrients, as signaling compounds, and as an antimicrobial barrier in the duodenum. Upon excretion into soil and water, bile acids serve as carbon- and energy-rich growth substrates for diverse heterotrophic bacteria. Metabolic pathways for the degradation of bile acids are predominantly studied in individual strains of the genera Pseudomonas, Comamonas, Sphingobium, Azoarcus, and Rhodococcus. Bile acid degrad…

Antibiotic compounds can enter the environment and eventually into drinking water, when manure containing non-metabolized antibiotic residues is applied to agricultural land. In this study, the publication data was analyzed from the aspects of countries, subject categories and keywords during the period of 1946-2016 from Web of Science. The results indicated that, during the period of 2004-2016, the United States, followed by China, dominated the publication of antibiotics in soil. Three most representative subject categories were "Microbiology", "Environmental science and ecology" and "Chemis…

Mercury (Hg) is deposited temporarily in soil and can be remobilised into rivers and seas. Given that rivers are a significant part of the mercury budget in the southern Baltic region (inland sea located in northern Europe) and meteorological changes (e.g. intense rain, drought) are observed more frequently, it is important to recognize the factors affecting the cycling of bioavailable Hg forms. The aim of this study was to identify the processes influencing the changes of labile and stabile mercury proportion in soil and the potential impact on the outflow of labile Hg into fluvial systems. F…

Gaseous nitrogen oxides (NOx), which result from the combustion of fossil fuels, volcanic eruptions, forest fires, and biological reactions in soils, not only affect air quality and the atmospheric concentration of ozone, but also contribute to global warming and acid rain. Soil NOx emissions have been largely ascribed to soil microbiological processes; but there is no proof of abiotic catalytic activity affecting soil NO emissions. We provide evidence of gas exchange in soils involving emissions of NOx by photochemical reactions, and their counterpart fixation through photocatalytic reactions…

Landfill mining is used to close the material loops by recovering recyclables from landfills. Previous research has focused on material composition reporting that, worldwide, landfills mainly consist of soil-like materials ("soils") and combustibles. Although soils have been investigated in a few studies, the results are limited to the presentation of substance concentrations without further analysing the substance patterns (e.g. correlation between substances). This research identifies similarities in substance concentrations within and between landfills, analysing approximately 300 soil samp…

Soil salinization is a growing threat to global agriculture and carbon sequestration, but to date it remains unclear how microbial processes will respond. We studied the acute response to salt exposure of a range of anabolic and catabolic microbial processes, including bacterial (leucine incorporation) and fungal (acetate incorporation into ergosterol) growth rates, respiration, and gross N mineralization and nitrification rates. To distinguish effects of specific ions from those of overall ionic strength, we compared the addition of four salts frequently associated with soil salinization (NaC…

Sorption and speciation of selenium in the initial chemical forms of selenite and selenate were investigated in batch experiments on humus and mineral soil samples taken from a 4-m deep boreal forest soil excavator pit on Olkiluoto Island, on the Baltic Sea coast in southwestern Finland. The HPLC-ICP-MS technique was used to monitor any possible transformations in the selenium liquid phase speciation and to determine the concentrations of selenite and selenate in the samples for calculation of the mass distribution coefficient, Kd, for both species. Both SeO32- and SeO42- proved to be resistan…

Cryptosporidium parvum is a zoonotic protozoan parasite that causes cryptosporidial enteritis. Numerous outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis have been reported worldwide. Cryptosporidium is transmitted to hosts via consumption of contaminated water and food but also by direct contact with contaminated soil or infected hosts. The present study investigated farm soil collected from 34 locations along the western Korean peninsula and 24 vegetables purchased from local grocery markets in Seoul. The soil and vegetable samples were examined by real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) to estimate the ris…

The widely used antihistamine diphenhydramine is present in municipal biosolids, and is detected in runoff from agricultural land fertilized with biosolids. In the present study the kinetics and major pathways of diphenhydramine dissipation in a loam, sandy loam, and clay loam soil were determined in laboratory incubations. The time to dissipate 50% (DT(50)) of (14)C-diphenhydramine residues at 30 °C ranged from 88 ± 28 days in the clay loam to 335 ± 145 days in the loam soil. Mineralization of (14)C was insignificant, and diphenhydramine-N-oxide was the only detected extractable transformatio…

Understanding the forms and availabilities of polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) would have considerable benefits for their risk assessment, and is of crucial importance for food security and remediation strategies in contaminated sites. In this work, the forms of six PAHs (fluorene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo[a]anthracene, and benzo[a]pyrene) in soils were separated into three fractions including a desorbing fraction, a non-desorbing fraction, and a bound residual fraction using a sequential extraction mass balance approach. The desorbing and non-desorbing fractions were ex…

A study was conducted to compare the effects of phosphate (P) materials in reducing cadmium extractability. Seven P materials (commercial P fertilizers--fused phosphate (FP), 'fused and superphosphate' [FSP], and rock phosphate [RP]; P chemicals--Ca[H(2)PO(4)](2).H(2)O, [NH(4)](2)HPO(4), KH(2)PO(4), and K(2)HPO(4)) were selected for the test. The selected P source was mixed with Cd-contaminated soil at the rate of 0, 200, 400, 800, and 1,600 mg P kg(-1) under controlled moisture conditions at 70% of water holding capacity, then incubated for 8 weeks. FP, Ca(H(2)PO(4))(2) H(2)O, KH(2)PO(4), and…

The processes associated with cadaver decomposition in outdoor settings, particularly those that occur during the extended postmortem interval (>30 days) are poorly understood. Thus, few methods are currently available to accurately estimate the extended postmortem interval (PMI). Of these methods, a soils-based approach has the potential to address the postmortem interval between which entomology and anthropology are the most valuable. Although the validity of soil-based methods has previously been established, little work has been conducted to explain the processes that have been designated …

OECD artificial soil has been used routinely as a standardized substrate for soil toxicity tests. However, can be the fate, behaviour and effects of contaminants in artificial soil extrapolated to natural soils? The aim of our study was to verify this hypothesis by comparing the loss, extraction, and bioavailability of phenanthrene in three artificial and three natural soils of comparable organic carbon content. Soils were spiked with 14C-phenanthrene and total 14C-activity change, the fractions extracted by dichloromethane, 70% ethanol, and hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin, the fraction minera…

A procedure for the extraction of Cr(VI) from solid soil-like samples was presented in which the complexing properties of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) were exploited to extract insoluble compounds of Cr(VI). A concentration of DTPA in an ammonium sulphate/ammonium hydroxide buffer equal to 0.02 mol l(-1) was chosen. The conditions of extraction of insoluble Cr(VI) from solid samples were optimised using soil certified reference material spiked with known concentration of insoluble Cr(VI) added as PbCrO(4). The extracts were analysed by adsorptive stripping voltammetry. Validation …
