Endodontic files come in contact with blood, infected pulp tissue, and irrigating solutions during root canal therapy. Some instruments such as stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy are used to observe corrosion of endodontic files which are complicated and dependent on preparation methods. Freshwater sediments and water samples were quarterly collected at different sampling stations from August 1996 to April 1998 in the Fei-Tsui reservoir watershed (FTRW) of northern Taiwan. In an overall evaluation of the situation published by IARC in 1993, beryllium and beryllium compounds are identified as carcinogens to humans. This prompted the initiation of this study on beryllium which reviews the situation up to 1998 on the aspects: properties and applications, toxicity, analytical procedures for food and drinking water, reference materials, occurrence in food and drinking water and estimates of daily dietary exposure. Special emphasis is put on analytical aspects and levels of beryllium in food and drinking water.

Aquatic toxicity tests were conducted to evaluate the effects of cadmium-enriched sediment on embryo-larval stages of the goldfish (Carassius auratus), leopard frog (Rana pipiens), and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Zinc concentration was measured in the serum of 10 children with protein-energy malnutrition (eight with clinical signs of kwashiorkor, and two with marasmic-kwashiorkor) on the first, 15th and 30th day after admission. The zinc levels were significantly lower for these patients on the first day than those observed for children with good nutritional status. No significant increase in zinc concentration occurred in the serum of these patients during initial period of recovery of nutritional status. The possibility of zinc supplementation for malnourished children during recovery is discussed.

In vivo and in vitro studies were carried out to characterize the exchangeable bone magnesium pool and determine what effect age and magnesium depletion has on bone magnesium. A highly significant correlation was found between the size of the in vitro elutable and in vivo exchangeable bone magnesium (r=0.97).
