A narrative review of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) applications in hearing loss, tinnitus and vestibular disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has emerged as a promising neuroimaging modality for investigating cortical activity in auditory and vestibular domains. Its portability, device compatibility, and motion tolerance make it particularly suited for use in populations that are challenging to study with conventional neuroimaging techniques, such as infants and cochlear implant (CI) users. The present study aims to explore the potential and limitations of this neuroimaging technique in the audiological and vestibular fields, offering an integrated perspective across pediat

Wide-Based Illumination and Detection in Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy for Enhanced Seizure Detection in Grey Matter.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a non-invasive method for monitoring brain activity by detecting hemodynamic changes. Studies have shown that it can identify ictal and pre-ictal hemodynamic variations, supporting its potential use as a complement to electroencephalography (EEG) in epilepsy monitoring. This study explores an expanded illumination and detection approach utilizing wide-based optodes and increased emitter-detector separation (EDS) to enhance fNIRS sensitivity to cortical hemodynamic changes while minimizing scalp contamination. A Monte Carlo simulation was designe

A process monitoring microreactor assembly for real-time reaction analysis using inline near-infrared spectroscopy and chemometrics.

The occurrence of highly exothermic and potential runaway reactions represents a significant hazard to workers, facilities, and the surrounding ecosystem. Due to their high reaction velocity, these reactions often prove difficult to monitor. In many instances, the recorded data result from several single-quantity sensors, such as temperature and pressure sensors. Yet, deviations from the anticipated process, and thus potentially hazardous reaction parameters, may only be identified by the combination of the sensor data, leaving the cause of the deviations unexplained. In this study, a custom-b

Network-based alterations in task-induced functional connectivity in bipolar disorder: An functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

BACKGROUND: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is increasingly used to examine cognitive abilities and support the diagnosis of bipolar disorder (BD). Despite its growing application, research on functional connectivity in BD remains limited, and task-induced functional connectivity remains under-investigated. This study aims to differentiate patients with BD from healthy controls (HCs) based on fNIRS-derived functional connectivity. METHODS: We analyzed fNIRS data from 50 patients with BD and 50 HCs during resting state and two cognitive tasks, including the verbal fluency test (V

Determination of the main phenolic compounds of olive (Olea europaea L.) leaves by near infrared spectroscopy (NIR).

The main phenolics compounds in Olea europaea L. leaves are oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol, hydroxytyrosol hexoside, verbascoside and apingenin-7-glucoside, being oleuropein the most abundant. In the literature, there are different methods to determine some of these compounds, which imply an analytical preparation for their determination. In this line, the use of techniques based on infrared spectroscopy is presented as a promising alternative. Therefore, a near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) calibration, validation and prediction to determine the main metabolites in olive leaves has been developed.

Noninvasive cardiac hemodynamics monitoring of acute myocardial ischemia in rats using near-infrared spectroscopy: A pilot study.

Noninvasive and real-time optical detection of cardiac hemodynamics dysfunction during myocardial ischemia remains challenging. In this study, we developed a near-infrared spectroscopy device to monitor rats' myocardial hemodynamics. The well-designed system can accurately reflect the hemodynamics changes by the classic upper limb ischemia test. Systemic hypoxia by disconnecting to the ventilator and cardiac ischemia by coronary artery slipknot ligation was conducted to monitor myocardial hemodynamics. When systemic hypoxia occurred, ΔHbR and ΔtHb increased significantly, whereas ΔHbO decrease

Effect of propofol versus sevoflurane on cerebral oxygenation in childhood Moyamoya disease. A near infrared spectroscopy study.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Anaesthesia during surgery for moyamoya disease (MMD) has different effects on cerebral physiology. Both sevoflurane and propofol have cerebral protective effects, albeit with different mechanisms. We used near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to observe the effect of sevoflurane and propofol on rSO2 in paediatric patients undergoing MMD surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included paediatric patients ASA grade I aged between 1 and 18 years undergoing surgery for MMD over a period of 1 year (from 1 April 2018 to 1 April 2019). Patients were randomized to 2 groups: Grou

Maximizing the Reliability and Precision of Measures of Prefrontal Cortical Oxygenation Using Frequency-Domain Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

Frequency-domain near-infrared spectroscopy (FD-NIRS) has been used for non-invasive assessment of cortical oxygenation since the late 1990s. However, there is limited research demonstrating clinical validity and general reproducibility. To address this limitation, recording duration for adequate validity and within- and between-day reproducibility of prefrontal cortical oxygenation was evaluated. To assess validity, a reverse analysis of 10-min-long measurements (n = 52) at different recording durations (1-10-min) was quantified via coefficients of variation and Bland-Altman plots. To assess

Identification of autism spectrum disorder based on functional near-infrared spectroscopy using adaptive spatiotemporal graph convolution network.

The accurate diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is of great practical significance in clinical practice. The spontaneous hemodynamic fluctuations were collected by functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) from the bilateral frontal and temporal cortices of typically developing (TD) children and children with ASD. Since traditional machine learning and deep learning methods cannot make full use of the potential spatial dependence between variable pairs, and require a long time series to diagnose ASD. Therefore, we use adaptive spatiotemporal graph convolution network (ASGCN) and s

Use of functional near-infrared spectroscopy to quantify neurophysiological deficits after repetitive head impacts in adolescent athletes.

There is concern that repetitive head impact exposure (RHIE) may lead to neurophysiological deficits in adolescents. Twelve high school varsity soccer players (5 female) completed the King-Devick (K-D) and complex tandem gait (CTG) assessments pre- and post-season while wearing a functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) sensor. The average head impact load (AHIL) for each athlete-season was determined via a standardised protocol of video-verification of headband-based head impact sensor data. Linear mixed effect models were used to determine the effects of AHIL and task condition (3 K-D c

Development of Miconazole-Loaded Microemulsions for Enhanced Topical Delivery and Non-Destructive Analysis by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

The antifungal drug miconazole nitrate has a low solubility in water, leading to reduced therapeutic efficacy. To address this limitation, miconazole-loaded microemulsions were developed and assessed for topical skin delivery, prepared through spontaneous emulsification with oleic acid and water. The surfactant phase included a mixture of polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate (PSM) and various cosurfactants (ethanol, 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy) ethanol, or 2-propanol). The optimal miconazole-loaded microemulsion containing PSM and ethanol at a ratio of 1:1 showed a mean cumulative drug permeation of 87.6

Point-of-care detection of fibrosis in liver transplant surgery using near-infrared spectroscopy and machine learning.

INTRODUCTION: Visual assessment and imaging of the donor liver are inaccurate in predicting fibrosis and remain surrogates for histopathology. We demonstrate that 3-s scans using a handheld near-infrared-spectroscopy (NIRS) instrument can identify and quantify fibrosis in fresh human liver samples. METHODS: We undertook NIRS scans on 107 samples from 27 patients, 88 from 23 patients with liver disease, and 19 from four organ donors. RESULTS: Liver disease patients had a median immature fibrosis of 40% (interquartile range [IQR] 20-60) and mature fibrosis of 30% (10%-50%) on histopathology. T

The neural correlates of inhibitory control in 10-month-old infants: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Inhibitory control, a core executive function, emerges in infancy and develops rapidly across childhood. Methodological limitations have meant that studies investigating the neural correlates underlying inhibitory control in infancy are rare. Employing functional near-infrared spectroscopy alongside a novel touchscreen task that measures response inhibition, this study aimed to uncover the neural underpinnings of inhibitory control in 10-month-old infants (N = 135). We found that when inhibition was required, the right prefrontal and parietal cortices were more activated than when there was no

Non-invasive transcranial electrical brain stimulation guided by functional near-infrared spectroscopy for targeted neuromodulation: a review.

One of the primary goals in cognitive neuroscience is to understand the neural mechanisms on which cognition is based. Researchers are trying to find how cognitive mechanisms are related to oscillations generated due to brain activity. The research focused on this topic has been considerably aided by developing non-invasive brain stimulation techniques. The dynamics of brain networks and the resultant behavior can be affected by non-invasive brain stimulation techniques, which make their use a focus of interest in many experiments and clinical fields. One essential non-invasive brain stimulati

Non-invasive Detection of Persistent Cortical Hypoxia in Multiple Sclerosis Using Frequency Domain Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fdNIRS).

There may be a relationship between hypoxia and inflammation, which is important in the outcomes of a wide array of human diseases. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one such disease. There is evidence that hypoxia may influence inflammation in MS. We showed previously that about 40% of participants with MS had hypoxia in the cortical grey matter using frequency-domain near-infrared spectroscopy (fdNIRS). In this study, we aimed to determine if hypoxia in MS persists chronically (for a year or more) by measuring at baseline and ≥12 months later. We found that hypoxia persists for at least a year in 8

Blended fabric with integrated neural network based on attention mechanism qualitative identification method of near infrared spectroscopy.

Near Infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) qualitative analysis technology has shown excellent development potential in the field of blend fabrics. However, the qualitative detection method based on the convolutional neural network (CNN) is difficult to accurately extract the feature of the spectral data, which will lead to missing detection or false detection; when using deep learning to build a qualitative detection model, due to interference of the external environment and other factors, the spectral data collected may have outliers, this means that the knowledge generalization on anomalous testing

Pre- and intraoperative cerebral near-infrared spectroscopy and postoperative delirium: Results of a prospective cross-sectional trial.

Postoperative delirium (PODE) is a serious complication that can occur during the first few days after surgery. A number of causes can make delirium more likely; one factor to consider is hypoxia during anesthesia. In this study, the pre- and intraoperative cerebral regional oxygen saturation (rSO2) as measured by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was to be examined with regard to an association with the occurrence of PODE in patients undergoing major abdominal procedures. Data from 80 patients (33 women, 47 men) was examined. The mean age was 66.31 ± 10.55 years (between 42 and 84 years). Thi
