The peroneal nerve is susceptible to traction injury during inversion ankle sprains. Previously, these traction lesions have been identified only at the fibular neck and popliteal fossa level. This report illustrates a previously unreported condition of perineural fibrosis of the superficial peroneal nerve at the level of the ankle following an inversion ankle sprain. Perineural fibrosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with persistent pain after ankle sprain.

With regard to the very common disease of sprained ankles the combined tear with ruptures of ligaments of the subtalar joint are possible. Even an isolated instability is known as the reason of long lasting post-traumatic complaints. Three different adhesive and two non-adhesive tapes were used by three operators to assess the compressive action exerted on the ankle at the moment of strapping, during different phases of gait, and after some days of treatment in ten volunteers. Only the adhesive tapes were still able to prevent swelling after five days. They should be used if a prolonged compressive action is required.

Cadaver studies were performed to examine the applicability of ankle position to the treatment of ruptured fibulocollateral ligaments. Nonembalmed cadaver specimens were studied with anterior drawer and talar tilt stresses before and after division of the ligaments to simulate the sprained ankle. Dorsiflexion completely reduced the anteriorly subluxed talus and apposed the ends of the anterior talofibular ligament in specimens with divided lateral collateral ligaments. A useful method for the diagnosis of acute rupture of the lateral ligament of the ankle joint is presented. Twenty-three patients with ruptures of the lateral ligament of the ankle joint were treated surgically with suture of the lateral ligaments of the ankle.
