Oral mucositis: Current knowledge and future directions.

Oral mucositis secondary to head and neck chemoradiation displays a complex molecular pathogenesis involving epithelial and microvascular injury, release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and host-microbiome communications. These processes lead to oxidative stress and the release of reactive oxygen species that stifle the structural integrity of the oral mucosa, with emergence of erosions and ulcers. The consequences are malnutrition, psychological/psychiatric symptoms, poor quality of life, and occurrence of opportunistic infections. The latter pose a major challenge due to the risk of interrupt…

Approximately 80% of rare and often incurable and serious conditions affect newborns and children, and roughly half of all rare diseases are … genome editing are troubling in that they may create an illusion of control over rogue science and stifle the necessary international debate surrounding an ethically responsible translational path forward. Children are people with distinct rights and interests. An arbitrary moratorium neither fosters their best interests or health nor respects their rig …

Guns, Culture or Mental Health? Framing Mass Shootings as a Public Health Crisis.

In recent years, public health scholars and policymakers have been calling for increased research on the public health implications of gun violence. However, scientific research on this issue has been stifled by a 1996 budget rider that eliminated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) funding for gun research. In this study, we examined newspaper coverage of three mass shootings that took place over a 20-year period before and after the passage of this budget rider. We found that sources and frames provided by news media to contextualize gun violence shifted markedly over time, pr…

Grossly apparent cartilage erosion of the patellar articular surface in dogs with congenital medial patellar luxation.

One hundred and forty-five stifles of client-owned dogs that underwent corrective surgery for congenital medial patellar luxation were inspected for cartilage erosion on the articular surface of the patella. The lesions were mapped in surface percentage ranges of 20% and by location. Two-thirds of the patellae had cartilage erosion. Cartilage erosion varied between 0 and 100% of the total patellar articular surface and was localised mainly on the medial and distal side of the patella. Dogs with Grade IV patellar luxations and heavier dogs were more affected. The majority of dogs in our study w…

The equine patellar ligaments and the infrapatellar fat pad - a microanatomical study.

BACKGROUND: Interpretation of patellar ligament (PL) ultrasonography may be difficult, as hypoechoic or heterogenous echogenicity are common … histopathology as these changes increase with age and are found in horses without clinical signs of stifle disease. Metaplastic tenocytes / chondroid metaplasia should be considered a normal finding throughout the medial PL and is not age dependent. The role of the equine IFP in stifle disease has yet to be elucidated.

An update on mobility assessment of dogs with musculoskeletal disease.

Mobility impairments associated with musculoskeletal diseases, such as osteoarthritis and degenerative joint disease, affect approximately 200,000 dogs annually and pose a notable challenge to canine health and welfare. Osteoarthritis causes the remodelling of synovial joints, alongside inflammation and impaired mechanical function which can be extremely debilitating. Secondary osteoarthritis commonly affects dogs and can be exacerbated by previous joint abnormalities, such as patellar luxation or cranial cruciate ligament rupture. Although musculoskeletal diseases can affect dogs of any age,

Cranial cruciate ligament rupture in small dogs (<15 kg): a narrative literature review.

Small breed dogs (<15 kg) affected by cranial cruciate ligament rupture secondary to cranial cruciate ligament disease are usually middle-aged (mean age at presentation: 5.4 to 9.8 years); terrier breeds, miniature and toy poodles are over-represented. Small breed dogs have a different morphology of the proximal tibia compared to medium and large breed dogs with a steep tibial plateau angle (mean tibial plateau angle 28.8° to 36.3°), absent base of the flare of the tibial tuberosity and a caudally bowed fibula. There is a lack of evidence regarding the optimal management of cranial cruciate li

Comparison of radiography and ultrasonography for the diagnosis of osteochondritis dissecans in the equine femoropatellar joint.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) lesions of the femoropatellar (FP) joint are diagnosed routinely by radiography, but lesions located in the trochlear groove or without accompanying subchondral bone changes can be difficult to visualise. Ultrasonography allows evaluation of articular cartilage and subchondral bone in the FPjoint. OBJECTIVES: To document the radiographic and ultrasonographic appearance of OCD lesions in the equine FP joint, grade ultrasonographic lesions and compare their accuracy in the diagnosis of these lesions. METHODS: The medical records of

CUTANEOUS T-CELL LYMPHOMA WITH LYMPH NODE METASTASIS IN AN ADULT ADDAX (ADDAX NASOMACULATUS).

A 13-yr-old male addax (Addax nasomaculatus) presented with locally extensive alopecia, slight erythema, and skin thickening on the medial aspect of the left rear leg between the stifle and tarsus. Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma was diagnosed after histopathology and immunohistochemical staining of representative skin-punch biopsies. No treatment was elected, and the addax was euthanized 3 yr later because of poor body condition, chronic dental disease, and confirmed spread of lymphoma to other cutaneous locations. Postmortem evaluation revealed spread to multiple lymph nodes but no further organ m…

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma associated with retained surgical sponge in a dog.

Retained surgical sponges are usually discovered in the abdominal cavity, sometimes years after the surgical procedure, and the typical reaction is formation of a foreign-body granuloma, often called gossypiboma or textiloma. In this instance, an extraskeletal osteosarcoma, associated with the granulomatous reaction to a retained surgical sponge adjacent to the stifle, was diagnosed in an 11-year-old Labrador Retriever 9 years after repair of a ruptured cranial cruciate ligament. Radiographic detection of linear foreign material in the soft tissue mass was the basis for a diagnosis of gossypib…

Immunological changes in canine cruciate ligament rupture.

Samples of sera (39) and synovial fluid (36) from 58 dogs suffering from inflammatory arthropathy of the stifle joints, 47 of them in combination with unilateral or bilateral rupture of the anterior cruciate ligaments (CLR), were investigated for C1q-binding immune complexes (IC) using a solid phase radioimmunoassay. In 31 out of 39 sera (79 per cent) and 25 out of 36 synovial fluids (69 per cent) significant IC concentrations could be detected. As controls 21 healthy dogs were used. The radioimmunoassay was standardised with aggregated dog gamma globulin. The sera of the dogs were also invest…

Excellent long-term clinical outcome in a young athletic dog following surgical complications of a comminuted patellar fracture and patellar ligament rupture.

A 1-year-old athletic golden retriever dog was presented for a non-weight-bearing right pelvic limb lameness that occurred during a canicross race. Orthopedic examination revealed pain and inflammation of the right stifle joint. Radiographs showed a traumatic comminuted patellar fracture. Surgery was elected and a midsubstance patellar ligament rupture was also identified. Surgical management consisted of a combination of techniques for patellar fracture fixation and primary patellar ligament reconstruction. All orthopedic implants were removed secondary to implant failure. Postoperative 20-mo…

Pseudo-orthostatic tremor in a cat.

An 11-month-old male castrated shorthaired cat was presented with a tremor in both pelvic limbs, which only occurred when standing (ie, countering gravity) or during active extension of the stifle. General clinical and neurological examinations were normal aside from the tremor of the pelvic limbs, which disappeared on performing a weight-bearing lifting test. Needle electromyography of both pelvic limbs in the conscious state confirmed a low-frequency (6 Hz) tremor. The cat was diagnosed with pseudo-orthostatic tremor. The tremor amplitude waxed and waned over time. The cat remained ambulator…
