Recent evidences suggest that reactive oxygen species and inflammatory mediators play a key role in the destruction of gastric mucosa. A catalyst-free approach for the generation of sulfonyl radicals from aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates in the presence of DABCO⋅(SO2 )2 is realized. The combination of aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates, DABCO⋅(SO2 )2 , and aryl propiolates affords 3-sulfonated coumarins in good to excellent yields. This tandem reaction process involves radical addition, spirocyclization, and 1,2-migration of esters. Additionally, the in situ diazotization of a number of anilines allows the directional synthesis of desired 3-sulfonated coumarins in a one-pot, two-step process.

In our effort to gain further insight into the enantioselective synthesis of the structural core of phormidolides B and C, we have discovered the formation of a Z-trisubstituted double bond. Here, we describe a highly selective process that can be applied to our target following a strategy that is based on Julia-Kocienski olefination. The use of 1-(tert-butyl)tetrazolyl sulfone affords the construction of the Z-trisubstituted alkene with high efficiency and stereoselectivity.

To determine factors associated with mutations in the Pneumocystis carinii dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS) gene, a prospective study of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients with confirmed P. carinii pneumonia was conducted in Atlanta, Seattle, and San Francisco. OBJECTIVE: Sodium polystyrene sulfonate (kayexalate) is a cation-exchange resin given enterally for the treatment of hyperkalemia. Fluorodemercuration has the greatest utility for the preparation of 6-[18F]DOPA, but requires separation from unreacted mercury precursor and other mercury-containing compounds. We studied the efficacy of mesna as a protectant for urotoxicity in pediatric patients receiving chemotherapy including oxazaphosphorines. Nineteen patients with malignant diseases (5 neuroblastoma, 3 acute lymphocytic leukemia, 4 acute non-lymphocytic leukemia, 2 non-Hodgkin lymphoma, 3 osteosarcoma and 2 rhabdomyosarcoma) were treated with a total of 106 courses of therapy between June of 1986 and May of 1989.
